I saw Bucs at Scranton and I am not surprised they scored a 99.

Oh my gosh! I actually agree on all points, including a need to run under the stands break. We were just below you in section R? I think. 50 and just past halfway up the stands.

i remember in 1970 we were in eire pa. it raines during the show. we were shaky. i watched hamburg from the stands. i saw a lot of guard flags hit the ground. but the drumline of colin campbel was hot that night. i went to vince bruni and told him "we're in big troble" . he poo pooed me. and early in the weel one of our guy's who went o school in buffalo said they were gonna give us trouble. well we lost to hamburhg for the first time ever. we were schoked. i went up to colin and said. " well done coach". that was a really good kingsman corps that year.
Doesn't it always rain for drum corps in Erie?

The Hamburg Kinsgmen went coed in 1972 with a saber line of five ladies. In 1973 all sections went coed. My first wife Virginia was the first female horn player to join for the 1973 season.
Can you remember what year we played Eli off the line and Jerry Dunn did the solo work? I did Kingsmen around the time you were there, but as I remember it was co-ed all sections. Came up with some good guys from Johnsonburg that year.

Didn't the Caballeros go co-ed in 80-81? (and it was only guard at the time)
When I left Westshore in 72, we were all male, later in 72 I was a Gardner Guard for a short time and they were all male. Later in 72, I went to Johnsonburg and they were co-ed already. That was last time I was in an all male corps(maybe 74 with Bucs, but can't remember for sure). Hamburg was already co-ed when I marched there. I must say co-ed is the way to go, especially all-age.....

in 1969 we had 20,000 people there . standing room only. biggest crowd ever for finals. it was great.
1969 My first year in drum corps, we were 12th. played standstill for the record. But watching finals for my first time(I was with WBS), my favorite 2 memories were there. First was knowing who was coming out when the streetbeats started to rock under the stands, and watching Cabs put up a cloud of dust marking time before they started the show. All the corps rocked that night and this 15 year old was smitten......

Let me guess... you learned that in the one-room schoolhouse you attended in the early 1800s.
Wow...we even dug our way thru mountains of snow and and miles of forests to get there..

Probably because anything with a pitchers mound usually meant trouble. In 1967, the Cavaliers did a complete brass line company front for the exit. I wonder if they had that in 66 for the Dream and had to deal with said pitchers mound.
I hated stadiums that were also baseball parks. Pitchers mound and in the case of the old Baltimore stadium the bleachers didn't line up with the sideline so perspective was off. I can't remember that being an issue at Dream, but man when it rained at Dream......

We hosted a small DCA show back when the field was still grass..I remember Sunrisers, maybe Westshore, Johnsonburg did a standstill...Once the Crossmen were here for a camp, then did a show around those years. We had kids from Brockway in the Corps and some were Phantom. After Cabs Alumni, I have been hoping to put Drum Corps back on that field.(Hate the 4th on a weekday, it cramps who we can get here)

How much bigger do we need?
-
Aquinas was okay, but wouldn't be my first choice (though I did win both my DCA titles there). I think it might be too small if it were still around unless a renovation were to expand it.
I am somewhat partial to JFK Stadium in Bridgeport, site of the '66 and '67 DCA's, and several World Opens in the 1960's. Today, it has been completely renovated and has a gorgeous field. Neighborhood and parking issues work somewhat against it. Same thing for the Scranton Schools Stadium (not the Lackawanna County baseball park). It's a terrific venmue since it's been renovated, but parking and surroundings are less than ideal, but not terrible.
Allentown -- Nice stadium, but that climb up to the field level from the street below with a drum is murder, and again, parking has always been a tough situation, but DCI East seems to thrive there.
Just one 'oldtimer's' rambling observations.
Did you ever do Altoona? I think it was called Brass Impact.? The stadium there is Mansion park and looks, is pretty nice. Was pretty nice back in the late 60's/early 70's and now is renovated w/turf and great lighting/parking and surrounding area.Very similar to Scranton

I think Aquinas was an excellent venue. I also liked Bucknell's stadium.(was it Mathiewson). Hershey was good. Actually remember more not so good places, but had great shows. In the end, Aquinas and all the old Horseshoe stadiums seemed to be better.

I hear ya Ray! I was also there for both of these..... (Hurcs in 74 and Sun in 79)
Yea, I know.... sometimes it takes me a while to read some of the posts.... LOL
Hey I remember all that....Bucs wore pants and t's I think...muddy as hell....

OMG WET TOUPEES..AHHHHHH

The HELLGATERS from Queens, NY ... named after the HELLGATE BRIDGE in Astoria
:-)
Dare I even mention th NY SKYLINErs?
OK How about the WESTSHOREmen....
-
I'm in the process of collecting and collating scores from years past - 1924-1979. I've got about 3,000 or so shows already.
Regarding Westshoremen, however, they start out as Westshoremen; then at some point switch to Westshoremen Bonnie Scots; and then back to Westshoremen.
Can someone advise me as to which years they were which - just so my "archive" will be as accurate as possible?
Thanks.
We were the Westshoremen Bonnie-Scots in the years that I marched, which were 1969-1972. When I joined they had been WBS for several years. Maybe Mr. Ream can get the exact years.....hope that helps..

I really find it much too difficult to pick any one number. All I remember was all the powerhouse corps could push it, some more musically than others...but the pride and emotion always showed...what a great era for drum corps
-
WOW I never heard any crap from anyone when I went to Reading
-
: thumbup: Wow, Danny Satchell (few posts back) I marched with George (he was real good too) Danny was real little back in my day. Glad he plays on...great stuff...let's look for an open door in April and not grieve for a closed one..somehow after every ending Westshore comes back...can it happen again?

FUNNY. I was at Reading because there wasn't a corps back in 73 or 74 also...not that I didn't want to be there, but I was THRILLED to be in Reading(Ralph Pace did drill and Red Winsor, bad spelling and all, was brass. When I tried out with Red I was so nervous I almost didn't cut it. He put me 2nd mello and that's how I met Tony and George..in just the 4 names I mentioned I learned more about drum corps in 1 year than anywhere else I marched...It was great, except for those #@% DA$#$ Hurricanes....Well the Hurcs song was what got me "in" with some of the people that were skeptical about letting "the enemy" in! (especially since we'd had their number the past two years) Some of the people that I already knew were more than happy, a few people that knew the people I knew were happy, but a few that had that "you were in Westshore the past two years, why should we be nice to you and let you in OUR corps!" attitude, (mostly people that had only marched the prior two years) weren't so happy about it! Hey, we REALLY didn't want to be anywhere else, but we were without a corps, and I wasn't wasting the chops I built with the basics program that year for nothing! (but more on that subject when we get to 1984) -
Shocked and saddened if indeed George passed away...I joined Bucs in 74 (I think) and George and Tony Yaklick(yes I can't spell) were playing first mello and I was a second mello...Both men were great to me and helped me along and also never were afraid to teach a newcomer what it meant to be a Buc....Great men!!! RIP George and my condolences to the family
