When I saw this performance during the Tonys broadcast, I was mesmerized by the choreography with the hanging lights.

Yeah the lights are also interteresting and could potentially be done, or something similar.

The Tony didn't have the rotating/rising falling stage. That is a key part too...

This is only chant so I think OK to post and they would only want us to post this to increase interest....

This  is horrible camera work and audio quality (the trombone player is sick), but shows the body movement, different rotating layers and speeds, and rising/lowering stage.

Musically, the layering is brillant. Oh judges.....

Well, Blue Stars had an “In the Heights” theme this past season, so drum corps mounting a Broadway show is still possible.

Loved that show, but will say Hadestown is a different beast and much more layered and sophisticated with more varied music. Thanks for the thought! I always love reading your posts.

  3. I saw Hadestown on Broadway a few weeks ago and cannot get the idea of it being a DCI show out of my head. If you are familiar with the visual staging and body movement they use in particular it just seems to all the boxes, yet still be immensely entertaining. If not, watch "chant" in the video of the entire show.  I now realize I can't post the YouTube link, but if you search for 1920 Greek Mythology (London) you will find the full show visually. Chant starts at minute 37, and is the song that inspired me.

I, of course, would love Cadets to do it and I've even reached out to say I would write the body movement and help with staging (an area they must improve if they are going to get back to the top). Note: I have never designed anything in DCI, but have always thought I could if the right opportunity presented itself.

The prop alone. (a rising and falling 3 layered circle that moves in different directions and speeds depending on the layer) creates so many possibilities.

Do you guys think it's impossible to do a "Broadway Show" as an entire theme now? The first show I ever saw was SCV 89. That is what got me into the activity as well as Cadets Les Mis. Now, it's like that is too straight forward and not innovative.

    Would love feedback/thoughts.

    Thanks!

P.S. - Of course given the jazz influences BD is a great fit for this especially given their movement prowess and have Scott Chandler, but.......past time to mix things up.

  4. The digital screens will be interesting. Definitely the next area to explore. When Tarpon Springs used them a couple years ago at BOA I was disappointed in what they added to the show.

If used effectively I think they essentially add another dimension to the show whether they should be allowed I don't know.

Oh my.  Some big names there.  Good for them.

Was April responsible for some of their REALLY good guards?

Yes April was the Color Guard Caption Head for all of the 90's and off and on during the early 2000's.  She was definitely a big part of the program's success in the 90's of course that included talented writers like Greg Lagola and Jim Moore also...now at Bluecoats.

  6. Love April and Jay. I don't see these changes moving the needle much or attracting talent.  Maybe April can pull some Florida talent into the guard, but brass will be tough to get.

Also weird to me that Jeff would "consult" for Cadets but still write for Crown, guess Cadets are considered a lower level corps now so that isn't a big deal...... maybe I should look at it as progress. Dunno.

It’s pretty easy to figure out:

Bonfiglio will take over as director

    bocook is writing brass

    aungst is writing percussion

    bilby writing visual

    donny VanDoren consulting

Matt Stratton brass caption head (been with Bloo but is a cadet alum)

my guess is there will be more consultants as well....not sure about guard.

    “Because that’s what DCIKnowItAll says”

Bigger changes elsewhere Phantom, SCV, BD and Crown to care about!

Meh - if this is true I'm not that excited honestly.  Need much more visual umpf....while I respect Bilby as an amazing Cadet Alum.  He has no experience writing/staging shows especially not in the WGI way that is needed now....I'm hoping for a different visual team.

They’re going to be very strong on the brass and perc side.  Just hope the new guard staff is a big enough upgrade.

Visual design needs the biggest overhaul, and obviously they Have to fill that position since it was vacated prior to the beginning of the season...

I’m curious re an old guard staff change in Cadets from ‘88 to ‘89. The ‘88 Guard was 11th in Semis, 9th in Finals. April G. became Caption Head in ‘89, and they won best guard. Did she (they?) replace the staff from ‘87/‘88? ‘87’s Guard is probably the worst on a winning corps (a gift of 7th place) and we’re lucky that the 100 pts. didn’t include guard. How were they able to turn that around so fast?

Greg Lagola!  Still working his magic at Bluecoats.

And that may have been different from what a person 10 seats down from you heard.

So what do you balance to?  The median of the seats, or the most direct line of perception?

I think they should be mixing that stuff to be barely noticed from the most direct seat... personally.

FWIW, I was on the 50 3/4 up the stadium ideal location and equivalent to where Judges would be.

  11. Was at Winston-Salem last night. I can confirm the brass sounded better. Not amazing, but better. Blue Stars went on even earlier when the sun was blazing down on them and that was probably a factor.

My major gripe (as reflected by Vis Analysis scores) is that it is impossible to read the show visually. The props are great and a huge step up from anything Cadets have used before. There is just no visual clarity or cohesion at all. I can't even tell what they are trying to get across visually.

I really hope they are able to get a top tier visual design team in during the off season.

While there is a lot about the show design that I do not like/does not make sense.  These are neat to me.  A cool Victorian take on the shako....It doesn't have to look exactly like the old shako to be effective.  The old shako would have looked stupid.

I think the thing about choreography is that while it is not easy to teach or perform, it is far easier to clean than drill. That's partly why we've seen a dramatic increase in the amount of choreography over the past 10+ years - to boost those visual scores by having a product that may look as difficult as any other but is ultimately cleaner than one that contains more drill. And because of that, it gives the music designers more opportunities to make their books more challenging, and thus easier to clean, than if they were doing drill all the time.

    This!

Do you think they’re conveying that story without explanation? I don’t!

I agree they aren't.  Also what is with the male/female symbols on the weapons and sets.  Are they trying to say men and women are against each other? Are they saying men and women need to work together?

I guess it is open to interpretation like many shows including BD always are.  It's just not done very well right now.
