  1. I think everybody here has tried to help Caroline with the very best intentions. But in drum corps, practice is everyday and for the most part, all day long and often into the night. Then of course, there's so much experience to be gained in performing shows nearly every day. Anyone good at math here to figure out the equivalent of two months of drum corps to college marching band? Not bashing band here.

  2. I am a she, but thanks. :)

Anyone know where and how to get a couple sponsorships? This being the last minute it is going to be hard to come up with all of the dues at once... :(

Of course, I can't speak for "your" corps, but they might be willing to work out a payment plan with you. Of course, if they do, just make sure you follow through and repay in full. Otherwise, word gets around and you most likely will not be permitted in another corps. But of course, being responsible is a big part of drum corps and life.

My very best wishes for you this summer.

  3. Tough one and of course, you're the boss. But I THINK I might thank the school sincerely for all their support. But, tell them that you feel you have a fantastic opportunity to improve as a musician and as a person and that when the tour is over, the school will have a much more dedicated, skilled performer and individual.

    Good luck either way B)

  4. This is going to be an everyday thing.

Yeah, starting June 15 I believe they'll put up a video every day through championships. For Cadet fans and especially parents who have kids marching there, I think it may be worthwhile and give both the parents and son/daughter a better connection in sharing the drum corps experience.

And no, I am in no way whatsoever connected to The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. I just thought it was a good idea for parents, son/daughter, and fans. If some DCP posters get it, I think it might provide some good threads and discussions. I would be tempted to subscribe if I wasn't going on tour.

    Go Cadets! b**bs

    Go Blue Devils! b**bs

  5. Not sure if someone has mentioned this, but do not STEAL!

This should go without stating, but yes, there have been occasions where some members from some corps have had "light fingers." Not cool! You'll probably get caught, you'll probably get a bus ticket home, and of course, you make your corps and yourself look quite bad.

  6. I'm all for those of you with issues airing your problems to people who can enact change.

I'm worried that the more crap that is slung in this post, the more potential harm will come to the corps, and will possibly damage any attempts to get the corps back on the field.

I do not know anything firsthand about the KK situation, but I personally believe perc2100 makes a lot of sense here. I assume the administration at KK has assessed where and when the main problems began to fester and will learn from them to make KK stronger.

I realize this is a forum and discuss is what we do here. I realize everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But criticizing a corps on a public forum when it's down won't help them in the future. Possibly, many people will believe and remember such negative comments. This will only make it more difficult to recruit in 2007.

If there are some who desire to give people at KK an "earfull" (whatever that may mean), it seems to me they would be more effective in getting their point across via e-mail, letter, or phone call directly to the organization.

    Just my thoughts.

  7. ...not a bad idea, and a creative way to get some more souvie bucks. It would certainly be interesting if there's a lot of one-on-one from Hop/Marc concerning the numbers the kids get and how the show evolves over the summer.

Although, I think this may end up flying better as a DVD at the end of tour so it can be taken in all at once.

Hi Bawker. Yeah, if I understood correctly, there will be daily video clips the day their tour starts.

  8. Don't moon the Mounties - They have NO sense of humor about that.

Not like I'd know about that or anything...

    LOL!!

And don't wander about the area of a school you were told not to. You may set off an alarm, which will alert the local boys, who will call the principal, who will meet with the local boys at the housing site, who will inform your corps director, and they will all hunt you down like dog.

"Not that I would know about this firsthand." B)

  9. Hi all. We've all read and shared threads about things like "What to expect at auditions," and "What to bring on tour," etc. But I thought it might be helpful to allow others to learn from our experiences concerning what not to do while on tour. Wisdom, spiced with humor, is encouraged.

    DON'T. . .

. . . complain to the cooks about the food. Some may be pharmacists in real life.

. . . buy liquid detergent and let it roll around the bus to leak all over.

. . . be late getting on the bus. Housing and show sites tend not to be within walking

    distance.

    . . . whine. It's not drumcorpslike.

. . . barf on the bus. Your popularity will plummet

  10. 2002 Cadets.

We had discussed the possibility of leaving the field and rushing the stands during BWBB for finals. We were all up for it, but there was too much of a chance that someone would get stuck up there and not be able to get back because of cameras and such.

Yes, there would've been penalties. About 2-4 points would be my guess, but we were all up for it. George was even the one who brought it up to us finals morning. Either way though, we had one #### of a time performing that.

Wow! Interesting behind the scenes tidbit. I bet the crowd would was went crazy. But, 2-4 point deduction - Yikes! Still, something that would be talked about for many years.

  11. Don't complain. You're going to be hot, sweaty, dirty and miserable, there will be bus breakdowns, bad food, bad scores, stupid staff (and stupid corps mates), bad decisions, not enough laundry days, etc., etc., etc.

Kimberly is absoluely right. Lots of "inconvenient" stuff will happen. Complain all you want in private, but a characteristic of a classy vet is that they don't complain. It's all part of drum corps.

    Other suggestions:

A pair of long pants - Believe it or not, it can get very cold on the bus at night, assuming the a/c is working.

Flip flops - Some school showers are simply discussing.

Suction cup baskets - You will want a handy container to hold often used stuff. Walmart is your friend.

small folding mirror - You can't always expect to get access to a mirror where you what to use one.

Don't feel you have to do everything other members do. You'll find out soon enough what I mean. Don't lose who you are because of peer pressure.

  12. It would be interesting to perhaps put together an DCP advisory board. A group of people that anyone with an idea could submit it to. The board could debate the validity of the idea and decide whether or not to endorse it. Something that is officially endorsed by a group rather than someone's opinion wouuld carry a bit more weight. Plus, it carries the added bonus, that DCP is not a club. Anyone can join and submit ideas.

Granted this would take some time to put together and there is no gurantee that it would be taken seriously. Personally, I think it would be step in the right direction.

Hmm. I like that idea. It think it might make DCP more fun and meaningful.

  13. No enough "moments" to let loose. Crown was pretty full sounding last year, but I don't feel like they went for it all the way.

Some of us like loud drum corps, BTW. I know it's shocking to many "musicians" on here of "refined" tastes, but there are lots of people who liked it when drum corps played to the edge of control. It's...dare I say it here on DCP?...EXCITING!

I'm one of those fans who like loud drum corps. I realize tone is "job one" for trumpet players, but drum corps shows are outside on a football field. No one is playing on Mt. Vernon Strads or Monettes. I'm not expecting "recording studio" tone. When I'm at a drum corps show, I want to be entertained and excited by range, dynamics, articulation and good choice of music.

  14. Be on time for everything!! Your bus WILL leave you. I've even seen instructors get left behind at show sites.

You are responsible for yourself. BE ORGANIZED!

Several have mentioned showers and they're absolutely right. Some showers/locker rooms will be disgusting. Flip flops are your friends.

Others have mentioned whining. That is one thing I noticed immediately about drum corps members. While some may "whine" to themselves, generally speaking, one of the many great qualities of members of drum corps is they do not whine. You're in drum corps now; not on vacation with your family.

It may be hard to believe, but assuming the a/c is working, as others have mentioned, buses can get VERY cold at night. Bring a sweatshirt and a pair of long pants.

Be nice to the volunteers, especially the cooks. They work hard and don't need to hear anyone complain about the food even though at times, it can be rather bland. Peanut butter and jelly, anyone?

Expect all kinds of inconveniencies happening. That's just drum corps.

I know I've been somewhat negative here, but sugarcoating won't help anyone. Better to know the not so good as well as the good.
