  1. I have now viewed the Blue Devils Semi-Finals performance for the 5th time via FN. I become more amazed with each viewing. A BRILLIANT production! As slick as can be. I regret having been critical of Blue Devils here earlier, based on my initial viewing. Therein lies the problem . . .

Drum corps presentions should NOT require multiple viewings to understand and appreciate. Further, I had the benefit of multi-cam and all other enhancements brought to me by the art's best producer. This Blue Devils show is way ahead of its time. It transcends any ability to appreciate the total package in a typical single-seat, live, in-person one time opportunity. You know, what the typical LOCAL crowd pays for when this comes to their neighborhood. This is a real problem, for Blue Devils and any other corps. No?

I'm telling you, those who only watched Blue Devils, in person, did NOT watch the same performance I enjoyed on my big screen and sound system. The synthesizer portions were effective and helpful, the poles made sense (seeing them from many different angles, high and low). The whole thing flowed cohesively. Performance moves were almost perfect. BUT. . . .

I'm concerned it was Tom Blair who brought this excellence to me. He is NOT there for the local family in a high school stadium.

Blue Devils were not the only corps with what I suspect are "hard to find" nuances. Geez, the wonder of where drum corps truly is today is available to find in most all the corps. So, here are my questions.

Can we find an audience large enough to sustain this solely from the bleachers?

Is this product crying out for more success on a better stage?

Here are the answers to your questions:

    NO

    NO

  2. It's a wide open race now folks. Why oh why must Crown's percussion be the thorn in their side again this year? I have to say though, I love BD's show and Crown's show equally. Cadets show does nothing for me. No one can do Medea like Star of Indiana.

  3. I know im jumping in on this one really really late, but I had to chime in with something:

I was there for finals in 96..flew in from Utah to support some BD hornline members(Melanie Hunter, JP Bartschi, Nate Seamons) who taught with me at a high school in Northern Utah.

Melanie and JP were in VK with me in 94 and were really good friends. It was good to see them go to a corps and win a championship after two hellacious years in VK (94 and 95). I too was in the stands and remember being brought to tears by the epicness of what was happening.

However, the truly best part about the whole thing was being on the field after retreat and seeing another former VK member that I marched with from 94 who went to play mello in Phantom in 96. Her name was Melanie too and she was ecstatic at winning! I snapped a picture of the VKers (Melanie, Melanie and JP) who went on to win with BD and Phantom in the same year. Looking back at the photo, you can see how happy they were for each other in the fact their hard worked paid off...and coming from the hell they were in with VK in 94 to winning a championship. You needed to be in VK during those horrendous years to know what im talking about.....

  4. If ever! I say you project the scores for them ;)

You'll probably be waiting quite a while Steve, the webmaster usually doesn't get the recaps up until Monday or Tuesday after the show....

DCI.org just took off the percussion 2 judge recaps from the sheet :silly:

I hope you got them into your spreadsheets last night Steve! Also, I dont believe DCM is using the 2 man rule for percussion judging. So how do you plan on coming up with a Perc Ens score for Pioneer?

  5. YogiBoo RESPECTFULLY congradulates wongbong on an outstanding job at tonight's competition. This being the first loss of the season for YogiBoo, the corps was disappointed with themselves and VOWED to do better at their next competition. An off night for the corps from Chicago, YogiBoo will be rehearsing hard over the next few days as they prepare for an onslaught of competition from Wongbong, Coldfusion, Oakland Skylarks and others. Great job to all so far!

  6. Yep, just go to drumlines.org, then go to the main index. From there, go to Drumlines.org Fantasy Drum Corps Forum, right below "Special Areas". Then click on either Division 1, 2 or 3. For examples sake, click on division 1. Then click on "View the official Div.1 corps listing etc....".

    Or click here:

    http://www.drumlines.org/threads/postlist..../0/Board/season

Then from there click on "View the official Div.1 corps listing, etc..." and then click on any of the corps names. Have fun exploring! And let me know what you think!

  7. Oh there definately alot of human interaction with my system. It's just much more user friendly because they can see future competitions and who is competiting at the touch of a button. It wasnt created to make things easier on me, but more for the corps director. Think of it as being able to see everything you ever wanted at the touch of a button. But hey, Steve's way is cool too. That's why Im here! An old saying goes, "Theres a million different ways to skin a cat..."

  8. Yeah, it's a snap now. For the first season, I did exactly what you did. Using spreadsheets and all. Then the Executive Committee formed and we pooled our "talents" to come up with what you see. It stills is alot of work though! :) Programming it was a bear, but it's the basis now for seasons to come.

  9. Yep, I am YogiBoo here, on FDCI and my own league on drumlines.org. Ill be posting some screen caps for you all to see on how I run my league for feedback, comments, flaming, etc :)  Glad to see four of us taking it up a notch over on FDCI.  Good job everyone!

    Awesome! Let's see it!!

Well here it is..this is how my league on drumlines.org runs. Im the Executive Director and I have 4 other people who along with myself make up the Executive Committee. DLWebmaestro, one of the Executive Committee members, created a database using mySQL so that the league is interactive within the site. Picking a tour schedule, selecting captions, making caption changes etc. can all be made "on-the-fly" with the scripts he wrote. Here is pretty much how it looks:

    discussion.jpg

This is the main discussion page within the complete forum page. Pretty much like here on DCP

    corpspage.jpg

This is the main page for each individual corps. You'll notice on the top left it says, "My corps YogiBoo Velcro Knights Div Rankings"

When a member of DLOFDC logs into Drumlines.org, that will automatically pop up, no matter where they are at on the site. They can click on one of their corps and it will take them to the page above. On this page, each corps director can view their tour schedule on the left, their caption choices along with how many caption changes you have remaining. Next to each caption, there is a "change caption" button that is hyperlinked to another page where you can change your captions. You can't see it on mine because I am out of changes :) Below the caption changes, a corps director can view their last 3 shows for reference. The "0.00"s are captions that have not been entered yet. The show locations on the left are hyperlinked. If you click on it, it will take you to this for example:

    showpage.jpg

From here, you can see which corps are perfoming at the show you are at. Or if the show has already been computed, you can go there and see your placement and score in relation to others. Each corps is hyperlinked so you can click on a corps and it will take you to their corps page.

By clicking on the "Div Rankings" while you are logged in, it will take you to this:

    rankings.jpg

From here, all corps are ranked by the highest score acheived. The rankings are split up by division. In the next few days, we will be "power ranking" the corps according to their performance during the week, trends, etc.

For the season schedule, we decided to do this:

    schedule.jpg

All the shows for the season are hyperlinked, so you can click on any show and see who is competing at the show. You can also see how other corps around the country performed on any night.

How do we enter scores? Look here:

    input.jpg

This is where the other executive committee members and I input scores. When DCI posts the recaps, we input the scores here, and the database sorts the scores and assigns them to the corresponding caption that a director has chosen. This all happens INSTANTANEOUSLY. Its all "on-the-fly". What about corps that don't compete on a night? That have to be "projected"?

    Look here:

    projections.jpg

Each Div 1 corps from DCI is listed. When you click on one of the corps, the database automatically computes caption scores based on the three previous outings posted. There is a formula that I designed for the projections that the scripting is created around. From here, I enter the projections into the projections page, and they are uploaded immediately.

And thats basically it! This is our second season, and we plan on doing a season in the fall, spring and summer. We have 88 corps this season, 35 in Div 1, 30 in Div 2 and 28 in Div 3. The top 2 corps in Div 2 and Div 3 get to attend the Div 1 prelims during finals week. From there, if the Div 2/3 corps make semi's, they are guaranteed a spot in Div 1 for next season. The bottom 4 placing corps in Div 1 get bumped down to Div 2 for next season and the bottom 2 placing corps in Div 2 get bumped down to Div 3 for next season.

Div 1 is 135pts and Div2/3 are 120pts. Tell me what you think guys?
