  1. From my experience, "local shows" helped corps morale, it was more enjoyable to have friends and family in the stands. Some shows were hostile out of the local scene for us.

Did it affect scores, no, I really don't think at all. I can think of one local one where we got dumped and there were repercussions for some people afterwards, and an away show we got heartily booed at until their faces turned blue and we won.

Judges know the deal. They'll look at the performance. They know whose Moms and Dads are at the show. If that local fan base lifts a corps' morale/intensity and helps them in their performance, yeah, that'll help the number.

The reverse can also be true. Knowing you're headed into the camp of the biggest opponent can also drive up morale/intensity as well. We'll have to see.

Umm, as for DCP being 'satirical' by the way...

I write satire now and again on another writers group, and I've never felt myself being satirical here without being painfully obvious. :exclamation:

i dunno. when we did our home shows we did better. even at syracuse we would do better. i think, at least for us, we got pumped up more at those shows.

  2. Don, I believe you are correct. I know nothing about the Brigs connection, however. But, should this matter? Can this corps, or any other corps overcome such challenge, and be rewarded for what they bring to the table by the end of the season? We'll soon see, but what do you think, Don?

i think that yes they can. but it is a challenge. and i don't care what anybody says. you can prepare for changes but the changes are what make it hard. so we have a bucs staff member whieghing in saying how wrong i am. well the scores and placements prove i'm right.

  3. As a member of this staff, I can say that you are very incorrect. There are no new Brigs that haven't been on the staff for years.

Sorry to cut through with some truth, but this can all be verified on this same message board.

How about this idea, come to the show this weekend and buy a ticket. You can see all of the corps and provide your opinions on what you see that night, as opposed to what is being written on this satirical message board.

    You might enjoy that more.

Hope to see you there. :tounge2:

buy me a plane ticket and i'm there. i live in florida. i didn't say they were new brigs . they were brigs. and i'm not putting reading down. and if you think i believe what certain posters have to say well i don't. and when you have a corps director change that is huge. but whatever. sorry i ruffled your feathers. not my intent.

  4. Hey, BigW!

    Finish the dammnn review!

This is a most interesting season. Public opinion probably says "anyone but Reading." That's understandable. There is NO doubt, Caballeros this year are, well . . easy to take. It's a most pleasing show. Wonderful melody, nice movement, great looking, and well played. What's not to like?

    Bucs?

YES, I am an alumni. However, this is not one of my favorite programs from Bucs, my 'team.' This year's Bucs have faced unique challenges. This was bound to be a slow-to-get-moving season. But, have they met that challenge? Have they now moved enough? Bucs have CLEARLY grown and 'upped' their game. BUT, in the end . . . . what wins?

Is this all about popularity, innovation, execution, political pull? I really don't know. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

the big guy has to get it together to write is dissertation fred.............LOL. just kidding with ya big w.

  5. I believe the staff change was essentially at the start of the '12 season, and that resulted in Black Symphony. The staff is outstanding and knows what they are doing, the difference is that this year they have absolutely taken some chances in terms of design, and it's really refreshing. Is it perfect? Absolutely not (at least night the last time I saw it, in Wayne). A lot of it was unreadable in the early season. That will lead folks to question things. Sure, they have younger members...so combined with the major change in style (particularly the Metheny piece and the Doors groove) it's going to take time to get all figured out. And from the results of the Scranton show (I was not there) it appears they are on the right track.

I'll let you know my thoughts after I see them in Reading this weekend.

the big changes came this year. carl roucco for starters and then about 4 or 5 others who were replaced by old brigs people. john i do keep up on this stuff. they had a big turn over this year. what happened in 2012 was very minor.

  6. I agree, totally about control of anyone's right BUT because someone has a right doesn't not mean they know how to or should use it all the time. How many people have been fired today because of social media stuff, ALOT, how many companies say it right in their contracts before hiring MANY, how many people research the internet to see what a person was up to before hiring MILLIONS, I can't tell you how many young instructors that no longer have a career in our activity due to their on line antics. Many won't go near these people , especially when they learn they were warned. We all live by rules, guidelines etc etc everyday of our lives.

I totally get ya, just don't think it's realistic . We are also NOT talking here about an individual Drum Corps is a large group activity and no matter how much we say we do not represent our corps , we do, if not in a specific opinion, certainly in respect ( as Frank said )

I will say I do think DCP has calmed down a bit or maybe I missed to drama this year..lol.

    lots of suspensions .

  7. Well, IMO-

    1) I do not believe that Cabs stand still any more than Reading. In fact, I think they are about the same. The difference is, when Reading is moving, they are MOVING. It's worked well for them in the past so why not keep doing it? The difference this year, is that they are a younger group with less experience to tap into. I think that shows up when your looking at Body Carriage, dirty feet, and dirty forms. Thats what I saw from Reading in Scranton. Many of the forms they were in when standing still were much dirtier than when Cabs stood still. I had heard that it may have been due to the high school hashes on the field and the lack of College hashes, but Reading put down their own hashes before the performance so I dont buy that. So it becomes a question of demand vs execution and what should they truly be getting credit for. If their show design requires them to run a lot, but in doing so their feet phase badly and people had their horns swaying left to right when moving... then I don't see why they should get credit there.

    2) By my count, Reading had three engaging audience moments from the brass line. One is a spin move that they do where individually the performers rotate 360 degrees on the move within a few counts. The second was when some of the hornline "broke on through" to the front area ahead of the pit. The final moment comes at the end of their show. Conversely, Cabs had 9 different moments where their upper body and lower body were bringing different levels of demand to their playing. Starting from the opening set, then their first hit dancing, their second hit dancing, and so on and so forth. The only two that were the similar where the first and second hit in their 1st piece. Every other time was different considerably. So from a variety and demand standpoint, I can see the credit there.

As far as me not being their visual judge. Sure, we all have our own opinions. I do not know what criteria the judges use so I don't know specifically what they are looking for. But based on what I saw at the show, one team runs a lot with a few moments of audience engaging choreography. The other show has more content and has more to watch at every minute that isn't just drill for the sake of drill. In the end, having their Guard score a 3rd and 7/10ths below Cabs, I question how they could be 5/10ths better than them in Visual Effect. Unless the two aren't at all linked... i dont know. I would think the Guard should play some part in that number.

As for the standing O. I saw people stand up sure. The same amount of people that stood up at the end of Fusion, Cabs, C2. I didn't see one team with a better audience reaction than the other really. I will give Bucs the credit of having their hornline 5 feet back from the sideline to end the show. It is very engaging and I'm sure is a good part of the audience reaction at the very end.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens this Saturday. I'm sure Reading will be tough to beat at home.

reading's biggest problem has been staff changes. it's a different staff now.

  8. Cabs 93.55

    Bucs 93.20

    Fusion 91.80

    C2 90.35

    Gold 84.00

    WS 82.90

I don't see Reading topping the Cabs this weekend. In fact, I see the spread opening a little. The Visual Effect score from Scranton was WAY out of wack from what it has been like all season. I don't give that number a whole lot of credit, especially when Readings color guard was scored as low as it was. For that Vis Effect number to stand you'd have to think they were flawless but thats far from what I saw. Readings visual book isn't close to even Fusion or Hawthorne. They run for the sake of running, but not for any intent other than two big moves. They added in two different choreography visuals from the last time I saw them in Wayne... both of which are the same, so it' doesn't bring much variety. And they didn't make a clean form the whole night in Scranton. When I saw this number on the recap i was in complete shock. There were plenty of moments in the show where you were looking around for something interesting and there was nothing there. With Fusion and especially Hawthorne, you are constantly entertained at just about every moment. I know effect isn't about "entertainment" but content and variety should certainly be a factor.

seems to me the reports out of reading were correct as the score showed. so...................

  9. Please Read Before You Post

If you *know* who it is.... please wait a while (not everyone is on here all day or even daily for that matter)

If there have been no Guesses..........Then give a *challenging* hint.

When giving hints on these try to be creative and just dangle the tiniest tidbit. Make people really think / work on it. Then wait it out a while before tossing another tiny vague tidbit...

C'mon we've got to make these last a little longer. PLEASE??

Also, any comments made MUST be made in good taste... this is a fun loving thread... not a revenge match. Please spew your venom elsewhere.

Please submit any questions and / or pics in their full size (preferably JPG format), with full description - names, Corps, Stadium, Year... etc. to:

    The *Guess Who* Mailbox

    Thanx in advance!

All that said and out of the way..

didn't we do this one before?

  10. Well, you said that a problem for corps with DCP was that they don't "have control of their own pages ... unless an admin steps in". Since the only pages here where an admin would step in are discussions by other people of those corps... well, I think you can see why I misunderstood you.

Anyway, thanks for the response. Not being on Facebook, I'll admit to ignorance about its workings and advantages or disadvantages. If there are discussions and reviews on Facebook as good in quality and conveniently organized as those on DCP,* maybe I should look into it.

*For instance, are there Facebook discussion threads for each of this year's shows?

in this day and age weather it be drum corps, politics sprots you name it people go to where they read and hear the things they want to hear or read. nobody likes criticism on any level. that is now the world we live in.

  11. Got some evidence to back up that assertion?

Facebook is a great place for individual corps to get their message out. When used correctly, it's a PR goldmine. Some corps do it well, some don't. Facebook groups, however, are a different story all together. They can be good, but can also be horrific. A couple of examples:

The Drum & Bugle Corps from 2000 to Present Day, 1990's Drum & Bugle Corps, 1980's Drum & Bugle Corps groups are all vibrant, active, and pretty well moderated. Also of note are groups like DCI Tubas/Contras and similar restricted subject groups with a clear set of posting and commenting rules.

On the other hand, the Drum Corps Planet Facebook group has quickly become the Mos Eisley Spaceport of the drum corps internet (a wretched hive of scum and villainy) because it's essentially unmoderated at worst, or selectively moderated at best, and the posting and commenting rules are routinely ignored as a matter of course. The fact that it's even affiliated with the main DCP site is a bit baffling.

Moderated public forums like DCP provide a good place for discussion, for good or bad. Why many of the individual corps try to ignore it (as a public face) while spending hours combing the site for every little mention of their corps (the reality) is a bit hypocritical. One reason for this is some corps feeling "they don't get what we do". Well, if we don't get what you do, that's your fault as a corps, not the fault of DCP or it's user base. I always laugh when a corps has a no-DCP policy for staff and members. Instead of using it as a teaching moment, they outright ban it (but still rush to read every little post...go figure).

uh yeah. a lot of people, and i mean a lot of people never post here anymore. and i know maybe 60-70 right off the top of my head.

  12. The close head to head scores between Cabs and Bucs are not hard to fathom. Most people at the show would have probably called it a toss-up. It does seem a little interesting that Minnesota's score came in so close just after the Scranton scores were announced, especially when they had a 91.25 just 23 hours before the Scranton show happened.

But, on the other hand, based on watching a video from a couple weeks ago, I suspect that Minnesota probably should be the 3rd or 4th seed in Open Class. They will probably end up in one of these two slots for Pre-lims after the shows next week, so no harm, no foul, I guess. My gut tells me they are closer to the 3rd through 6th pack this year, and not the Cabs or Bucs, but I guess that will be sorted out on Saturday afternoon in Rochester.

really interesting since one show should have nothing to do with another. do you suggest collusion?

  13. PS: Incase you haven't heard....

I'll copy and paste this for you from DCA FB page.

    From DCA FB:

We're terribly sad to announce that our long-time friend and DCA treasurer Michael "Red" Corso is in a Rhode Island hospital fighting for his life. Red took a nasty fall yesterday, and his condition is grave. Please keep him in your thoughts and say a prayer for Red

i'll be praying for him.god speed red.

  14. Apologies for falling behind everyone. As Matt mentioned, I have been very busy (band camp, drum corps, and a full time job), but am enjoying a day off today and have updated the rankings with all scores from the past two weekends.

a 5.65 point jump for bucs after not competing. so it shows that all those people were right and i was wrong. you don't have to compete to get better.

  15. And these are my predictions. Bear in mind that I was off by an average of 2.50 points per corps with my guesses for this weekend!

    Big Sounds in Motion (Reading)

    O1. 94.50 -- Caballeros

    O2. 94.35 -- Buccaneers

    O3. 91.45 -- Fusion Core

    O4. 89.60 -- Cadets2

    O5. 84.40 -- Carolina Gold

    A1. 84.05 -- White Sabers

    Fanfare 2014 (Bridgeport)

    O1. 85.75 -- Bushwackers

    O2. 83.80 -- Sunrisers

    O3. 82.70 -- Hurricanes

    O4. 78.40 -- Windsor Regiment

    O5. 74.55 -- Skyliners

    A1. 72.10 -- Excelsior

    Well, we shall see.

i think the bucs give it one last hurrah and squeak by in reading. white sabers score you have may be a tad high.

  16. Class A:

    White Sabers 82.40

    Open Class:

    Caballeros 92.60

    Buccaneers 92.55

    Fusion Core 89.85

    Cadets² 87.35

    Bushwackers 83.85

    Hurricanes 81.20

    Skyliners 73.30

WOW!! look how tight that is between cabs and bucs. 1/2 a tenth. looks like DCA is gonna be a barn burner. congrats to cabs!
