Arcadia is closer to Pasadena than Monrovia. Although they ARE neighbors.

For those of you who are still looking for hotel/motel, I will list cities that are along the way to the Rsoe Bowl via Interstate 210, State Hwy 57 coming from Orange County. Reason why is because this particular route has carpool (HOV) lanes and it takes an hour or so from the OC to Pasadena even with Traffic.
From Pasadena to OC:
Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, Azusa, Glendora, La Verne, San Dimas, Covina, Pomona, Diamond Bar, Walnut, Chino Hills, Brea, Fullerton.
Another tidbit: Hwy 71 to the 210 (From Corona) may be another option with Chino Hills, Chino, Diamond Bar and Corona: BD and The Cadets' rehearsal site is in Corona

With friends in Upland. How is traffic on the 210? That is where we would hop on and take it all the way into Pasadena.
Whoops, meant 210.
Fortunately there's a carpool (HOV) lane from Upland all the way to Pasadena on the 210, so even if there is traffic it shouldn't be too bad. For traffic info in LA I would recommend http://www.traffic.com. FREE traffic info! Rush hour to Pasadena should subside around 9am.
I reside in SoCal and used to be a courier 10 years ago so I know SoCal like the back of my hand....So PM me if you have any questions about places or getting around SoCal. ....Oh yeah. I'll be staying in my own bed. :)

I wonder if this forum existed back in 93, what people would be saying about Star's show. Please do not interpret this as a pro Cadet post. For the record, I can't stand the narration. Love the music. I'm just comparing the reaction and it seems like Mr Hoppy feels like he is Mr Mason. I hope not and I hope that this experiment would...well....Let's wait 10 years to see if we are in awe and can't stop posting about how innovative the show was, or ....(Men in Black). it never happened.

I have no problem with what SCV did. They have the right....and responsibility...to protect themselves and intellectual property of not only the composers they have contracted with but the staff whose works they use. AND to insulate themselves from predatory legal action.
DCP had a topic up recently concerning a former staff member suing a Victoria TX high school band program for an alledged breach of copyright laws in using marching techniques (wich apparently he picked up from others). The attorney he used is well known for searching the Net and initiating legal action (some of it on somewhat shady ground-he actually got countersued for malicious prosecution) on various band programs (usually for ridiculous amounts-trying to force a settlement); and makes a lot of money off of the out-of-court legal settlements he really is seeking. (He usually loses in court.) The corps itself probably did not mind having those up...but they have to protect themselves, the activity, and DCI from the predators that would try to sue and seek the ubiquitous 'financial settlement'. This type of action could easily destroy the finances of a corps and would send the activity crashing down.
Good point...I'll shut up now ..Thank you for the responses.
-
Please don't try to "shame" SCV for doing what is their legal right to do.
While I totally agree that they have the complete legal right to what they want, I doubt that they will feel shame for my viewpoint.
It's possible that what Metallica was to napster is what SCV maybe for drum line videos shown on youtube. It's possible that the days of having someone in the northwest(who may never see a Div I Corp) watching how great Phantom Regiment's drumline is througout the summer are numbered. Possible solution, SCV should do what the Cavies and BD have already started. Media access to their corps throughout the season via their site or youtube.
-
You know not much about copyright law, mon ami.
If it is published (which I'm sure SCV's exercises are, since they were printed out on paper) and can be deemed the intellectual property of the writer, then it is entirely within their rights to refuse public distribution of their work gratis via recording. Check into what a "mechanical" or "synchronization" license is.
Since, for example, Cassela/Gusseck/et al later publish their stuff at Tap Space, I'm sure they (or most any other accomplished arranger, be they with SCV or some other corps now or any other time) wouldn't appreciate the potential loss of revenue.
Makes sense and I concede. I wonder why SCV is so anal about this issue when other corps don't seem to care. I'll say this, while the other corps have exposure via Youtube and other sources, SCV is going to shoot themselves in the foot by limiting their exposure. Shame on them.
-
If the exercise was written by someone in the organization, they can still request to have it pulled anyways.
Ok, so the staff who is fully aware of people taping their drumline doesn't say anything all season in numerous parking lot's across the country, but yet they decide to enforce rules when someone post the video for all to see for free.
I agree that if SCV feels that they want to protect their music, then adivse everyone before they warm up in the parking lot not to tape their warmups. They can't have both ways.
-
I'm quite sure that all corps only receive the rights to arrange the music they play for competitive shows and for official corps or DCI recordings. BD and SCV obviously feel that they have a responsibility to themselves and to the owners and legal distributors of the music to prevent it being shown for free on YouTube. Other corps perhaps have different concerns.
Brass warm-ups or percussion warm-ups that are merely exercises and are not copyrighted are a different story.
I, too, miss seeing the shows for free, but the corps would certainly seem to be within their rights.
I posted SCV's Drumline warming up, not the book/show
-
If you were taping copywritten material then it would be illegal. You don't have the copywrite clearance that SCV paid for.
It's public, no copyright notices, it's not in a venue.
-
I posted a few videos of SCVs drumline from back in 2004. Then I was notified by Youtube that they were removed. I asked who requested the action to impose copyright infringement. They replied Santa Clara Vanguard. I was stunned!! <**> . The video was taped in a public parking lot. Am I missing something here, Why would SCV take such action? Posting parking lot footage of drumlines helps the activity and I wasn't aware that it's against the law to tape something in public and posted on youtube. BD has been doing this as well. I was informed that it's been primarily these 2 corps. Can someone shed some light on this issue. I'm really not happy about what they are doing. <**> . I have filed a counter notice with Youtube!

Their riff at the end of the show is awesome.
I think it's the best ending for drum book, hands down
.....I would even venture to say that it's one of the best endings for a drum corps show.
-
I thought the percussion was the weakest section in the Blue Devils. When was the last time they won a percussion title?
No, really, I don't know. lol. Answer, please? Thanks :)
1997, longest drought of no drum titles for active Top 5 div I corps since Cadets 90-01, of course Madison hasn't won High Perc since 1975, perhaps Roger Carter can bring them a trophy, last time BD had a sucessful run of Drum Trophies 94,96,97 he played and was on staff for BD. Who knows B)

Pit & Battery or just battery?
I've watched the battery only clips about a million times, give or take :)
I have audio of pit and battery
-
Agree with with other lines mentioned
SCV 98 needs to be recognized - Snare feature was innovative, the way it was written and executed. Casella's arrangement of the battery and pit is seemless and that line pulled it off. I listenned to the entire 98 Finals judges tape. WOW

IMO Vanguard 2004 is the best written percussion ensemble in drum corps, ever.
I would LOVE to hear a percussion only run through of that show...does anyone know if it is on the Jonz '04 DVD?
youtube has it or PM me for audio of it

i dont think anybody should have a problem with this thread, but realize those that have marched may be alittle put off by a thread that has the possiblity of turning into a big bag of excuses. im not pointing anyone out, all of you who posted are beautiful people and are probably amazing players. but what is not good for the activity is the 16-20 yr old who sees this thread and decideds to become another one of those kids who are "too good for drumcorps" and never marches, or marches for about a week and then quits, but still veiws his or her self as some sort of voice in the activity, and then becomes whome many of the marching community despise. so if you read any sarcasm or dissent from current or FMMs, thats probably why.
so in short... march drumcorps!!! hooray!!
I have been a huge Drum Corps fan since 93. Watch every tape possible. I marched in my HS Band, a Summer Marching Band in 95 and a winter line in 96. Well, Unfortunately I'm that person who never made the Major Leagues (Drum Corps) and just wishes he had another chance.
My last chance was back in 98 (age out year) when I audition for SCV tenor line and was cut. I take full responsibility for not making it. Biggest MISTAKE: Not auditioning enough with local California Corps or even other corps around the country. My one and only drum corps audition was with SCV in 98.
Back in mid 90's, VK, Pacific Crest, Freelancers, Mandarins, SCV Cadets Corps, BDB was around. My mistake was that I thought I was too good to audition for them and to wait until I felt was I ready to audition for the SCV or BD.
Yes an augment can be made that perhaps I wasn't good enough, that could be the case, who knows. However, because of my youthful ignorance, I feel that if I would have audition with every corps I could, starting when I was in High School in the early 90's, even if I know I won't make the cut, I know that experience would have helped tremendously. I would gotten insight into what instructors are looking for, I would realized very early on that having chops is not enough. I could have learned their warm ups and exercises. I could have networked with others. Finally I would have understood that it's ok to march on corps that's not at the top of your list. There's a reason for drum corps in different divisions. My ignorance cost me that joy of marching and experiencing drum corps.
Bottom line: I hope that anyone out there who is in High School who has the desire to march DCI and maybe falling to the aforementioned ignorant misconceptions I had to please learn from my mistakes. For example, if you are 15 and want to eventually march for the Bluecoats, audition for them this fall, even if you don't make the cut, at least you will learn their philosophy, exercises, etc. As well as the instructors knowing who you are.
My hope is that people don't interpret this post as a pity party. That's not my intent. My intent is to be honest about why I didn't march for an activity I so love. I'm huge fan and hope that this serves to warn those out there who may experience the same misconceptions.
Peace

Jordan, have you heard any of the original Don Ellis charts that they used?
PM me if your interested in the original Don Ellis recordings of Open Wide, Great Divide, Chain Reaction and Strawberry Soup.
BTW, Being a percussionist, WOW to the 93 BD hornline. Love the use of the solos and ensembles throughout the show. Love it! Drumline....not so much. Made up for in 94 though.

an abomination.....HATE IT....FAN Network is too expensive for 3 months. I'm on a T1 connection and with 3.0 ghz/1gb ram comp and it's loading up slow.

Off topic, but who wrote that book? I thought it was Scott Johnson again, but perhaps I'm wrong then....
1994 was Scott Johnson's first year with BD. The 94 book was arranged by Lee Rudnicki aka "drumlaw". He or the staff also switched the snare grip to match.
