  1. Ugh....

DCI uses a third party to secure this kind of stuff. This process can take a LONG time.

When it comes down to it, drum corps do what is in their best interest from a competition stand point. If they have a piece of music that fits great into their show and is going to help them out competitively than I doubt there are very few corps that would ditch a tune just because it wont be on the DVD.

When it comes down to it, this activity is about competition first.

DCI uses a company called Copy cat

  2. You are way way wrong.

I was involved in the process this year. The troopers got permission to arrange. DCI does the recordings (not the troopers) and they could not get the permission for a reasonable amount. Hal Leonard wanted tens of thousands of dollars for that one song.

really I doubt it is thousands of dollars .. . it depends on how many copies you are pressing or making.

  3. I've been a fan of the Blue Star organization since the mid 70's.

It was always a thrill to see them when they were a division 2/3 corps. They never "dumbed down" their program. I loved watching them tackle a difficult show and selling it in August. Seem like they have kept that tradition alive.

Thank-you Blue Stars, Madison, Pioneer and Racine Scouts for keeping drum corps alive in Wisconsin.

thanks for noticing the work we did in the lean years !

  4. Just not the Jewish Star that was very prevalent when I marched, and before I marched. But that wasn't politically correct enough, so it's become a generic 5-point star.

umm it was always a 5 point star many members turned it in to a jewish star ( for reasons of bonding with the corps song etc

but still we usually used 5 point stars in drills sometimes a 6 point here and there

in the early 2000's alot of stuff got blown out of proportion by vets,, people thinking stuff was tradition when they were not really

BTW when I was teaching a bit in winter of 2008 many kids still had jewish star tats, necklaces, etc...

  5. Dave,

I understand its all good man let me know if it is a lock for o-fest I will do my best to be up for it also!

I will buy first round of city beer !

It's not changing the uniforms period, it's completely abandoning anything recognizable as them. Even with that there was no looking at the Cadets and saying "Well gee, who the heck is that?" They still looked like themselves even with that. Even when Blue Stars made minor changes here and there in years past they were still recognizable as themselves. Now they're not.

Butler, I appreciate the sentiment and I am with you on all that. Honestly, the corps is going to do what it wants and there's nothing I can do about it. But I don't have to like it and I have said my piece about it. I think abandoning any semblance of recognizability for scores is a mistake, and not one I wish to gloat about pointing out. But if I didn't say what I thought, well, then I really would be hating Blue Stars--apathy is the true opposite of love. I'm not going to make myself into some sort of victim of opposing thoughts because there's always going to be a lot of different opinions on stuff like this, nor do I wish to see some sort of major split going on as a result. But I don't like it one bit, and I think in the end they'll come to regret the decision. Hopefully they will find a way to a modern look while still looking like the corps they've been for four decades now. I will say, however, that this is exactly the sort of debate between alums that I always appreciated when I was marching--no sunshine, no covering up disagreement, just straight up opinions and reasoning, and I'm glad to be a part of it. If things work out hopefully I'll make it up for the Oktoberfest parade; my attempt to get Inner City booked as part of the festival didn't work out, but hopefully I'll be doing better on the cash front and make it up this time around.

  6. I also think that the BoD is more then capable of making choices

and if I am right they are open to the public

so if people have problems feel free to go

but for the people that are on the BoD that I marched with I trust there decisions

most of them marched in Blue Stars longer then any of us !!

Plus Brad Furlano is at the helm (and anyone that marched for 12 years and been teaching or admin rolls 12+years) know what is good for the corps

h.e.l.l. I sit in a cube most of my days talking to music stores and teachers

... I Daydream I wish I could be where those kids are right now

at least I had a (VERY) small part on helping them get there

  7. I did as well, and I would not have preferred that. As I said: you knew who you were looking at when you saw them. It was unquestionable and it was ######. Now they could be any generic marching band. I'm sorry and I don't like speaking of my old corps like this, but I calls it like I sees it, and what I sees is a corps giving up on what made it special and unique visually in an attempt to blend in to what's currently the hot artsy trend. That's pretty weak. I know I'm going to get nasty PMs because of this but frankly I don't care.

    Dave,

you know I see what you are talking about and I used to get made when they pulled the stripes or took away the white bucks

but then I started seeing stuff like:

    -the corps singing jewish

    - clapping for other corps

    - walking in pairs

    - good attuide

    - saying thank you when you go through the food line

    - working hard

    - becoming brothers and sister with each other

    - making themselfs and the corps better

    - being Blue stars

    -The End Crowns The Work

dave me and you both marched in the small blue stars but if it was not for the many corps members that stayed and bled blue in the lean years there would be no blue stars now

many people that marched in the 60's and 70's dogged us because we were not a open class corps

now we are doing the same stupid thing about uni's and stuff we have no control of

the kids are still coming out at the end of the summer "BLUE STARS"

just like you or me did (just with less bus break downs and minus the ###### horns)

and Dave I still love you man you blead alot of blue
