  1. An exception to this observation seems to be percussion. The percussion judges don't seem to have a problem putting a 10th place corps' drum line up way high in comparison to the rest of the corps. I often wonder why it's ok - allowed - encouraged - for percussion, but no other captions. Anyone have a theory?

    I think the performance quality of brass lines and colour guards drops off faster as you go down the ranks compared to percussion, and therefore the lines are closer to eachother in initial quality.

    I would think it is due to supply and demand of performers. There are 10 million snare drummers at every audition camp, and 20 million more that have videos on youtube trying to grab a spot. Compared to brass and guard, how often do you see postings on DCP in May or June looking to fill a battery spot? Not nearly as often I would guess.

  2. Ahh, we missed points. That's not a sweetheart deal, that's spoils. A sweetheart deal would be Yamaha saying that Racine can't the the sweet deal even if they obtain world class status. It sounds like you'll only be satisfied when Yamaha gives the two corps the same amount regardless of the exposure they get. What sense is there in that?

    I really don;t care who pays what...so I am satifisfied already :laughing:

    I was trying to provide an example, but I guess I wasn't along the lines you were aiming.

  3. But that's not a sweetheart deal, that's Yamaha's marketing (and the basis, I'd say, of marketing). That is, pay the most for the most exposure. What do you expect the Cavaliers to say to Yamaha? "No thanks, we'll pay what Racine pays." That solution smacks of socialized drum corps. Doesn't the rule of "the spoils go the the victors" in drum corps? Isn't that part of the desire to obtain world class status? How is that a sweetheart deal?

  4. Actually, I'd say I'm probably closer to your POV than it seems. True, I only really became aware of the existence of drum corps in the last few years, but I really have nothing to do with the marching band world. My only experience in marching music beyond watching my school's marching band at football halftimes has been drum corps, so I actually do think the mix of woodwinds and brass in marching bands looks and sounds unnatural. However, I'll definitely grant that I don't have the historical background or influence that you and many other members on DCP have.

    I am a relative drum corps baby to a good slice of the folks on here, and I started in 1994.

    You didn't have 10 years (or more) of knowing and loving drum corps, sans voice, casting a shadow on the activity post 2004. You just accepted the activity as it was, which is the same thing I did. I didn't care about valves, and grounded pits, and colour guards dancing.

    Maybe in the year 2020 you'll be talking about major changes, and someone who just marched 2019 will downplay your opinion.

    So Open Class / II&III / A&A60 can no longer advance to quarterfinals to compete with the big boys, and now their members can no longer try to knock off a Cavalier or Blue Devil? :thumbup:

    I listen to Glassmen 2004 once in a while.

    My problem with the show design is this: In 1993, Star spent 8 full minutes teasing, and pulling the audience in then pushing them away before finally hitting that resolve. Glassmen's arrangers decided to use it 4 times. It kind of cheapens the effect of the moment to hear it so soon and often. IMO.
