  1. Notably:

Bucs took only two subcaptions, percussion and visual ensemble.

MBI by .05 in Visual; .15 in Music; .5 in GE and .2 in Communication. Neal Smith gave MBI a perfect 20 in Visual Effect as did Charley Poole in Music Effect. Music Effect average was 19.95. Yikes.

    I'm really sorry I couldn't be there.

Congrats to MBI, StarUni and Govies.

Special consideration to Carl Ruocco and everyone from Pretzeltown for all the excellence over the years.

Ace, without me getting suicidal, could you give the color guard numbers?

  2. I knew you wouldn't agree, but that's not necessary. Do I think it has an effect, of course it does. The judges are paid to adjudicate the performance on the field that night, so they would be deft if they didn't hear it and didn't let it effect their perception at least a little bit. Nothing wrong with players in the pit who have been there all season long. The point I brought up was "should it be allowed at the championships for a one shot gig?" Not those that can't march for a variety of reasons and have been in the pit the entire or most of the year. I didn't say that and I didn't expect people to agree with me.

    [uote]

Isn't/wasn't thers a rule that said you had to march prelims in order to march in finals?

  3. I see this move by YEA becoming a template for other DCI organizations looking to keep their programs alive but operate within a better budget. With DCI Open Class on the decline, I'm wondering if some of those corps are starting to look at DCA for a more flexible, but still competitive arena.

As far as Cadets2- I think it boils down to a small level of jealousy among the other corps (only a slight bit.) Programs like Fusion, Hurcs, Empire, and Cabs put a lot of effort every off season and in the winter months to bring new bodies into the corps and condition those new bodies for the summer. They also put a lot of effort into bringing in quality staff.

Now here comes a YEA sponsored DCA corps with decent (not never ending) financial backing, an abundant world class staff list, and 400+ young adults foaming at the chance to be apart of Cadets 2012. Now I'm sure plenty will be turned off by the "Please march here for a year and than we will look to bring you into Cadets in 2013" speech, but also an equal number will likely accept the offer and spend their summer in Cadets2.

As for the age restriction- I agree I would rather the corps be open to all ages so that Cadets2 is on the same level as the other corps. But at the same time- The Cadets, like most other World Class DCI corps, have a very strong Alumni. I can only image if those age restrictions weren't in place, the fight for membership in Cadets2. Maybe the age restriction will in fact keep things even?

I'm on record for not being entirely supportive of this new effort by YEA. For me- its because I really do believe they will come out in 2012 with a very strong program and be a competitive force. I would have liked to see them start small and work their way up to being a powerhouse like most other DCA corps had to instead of coming out in year 1 and dominating. I think there is more evidence to support that this will happen more than it wont.

Either way, anything that continues to support the circuit and help it flourish I welcome. If nothing else, the Top 5 will finally change in 2012.

What amazes me about all this, unless I'm mistaken, YEA has been involved with other Corps before, including a previous D.C.A. Champion. I don't recall any of these Corps all of a sudden reaping all these benefits that everyone seems to be expecting that will instantaneously change the standing of all the present member Corps of D.C.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. You were generous by saying Georgia was interesting.... Quite humorous on the field with all the Baris asking each other if we knew the music (was it really THAT obvious??) It was nice playing for the hometown crowd, and I do fully agree great performances by all, and was good to see Boots after almost 30 years!

I think "The Blousemen" were pretty good, and probably had "HIGH SUIT", also "The Stealthmen" were highly entertaining,, I think they had "HIGH VISUAL" although it was a bit difficult to see most of their show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Hey Donny, There's a rumor circulating that since you're one of his biggest fans, and his numbers are abit low this year, that "Brigadier General" Tardy maybe looking for some assistance or input from you about leading his troops on the field this jyear. Not that HE should have any problem, but I guess he figures he may as well go to the best for any suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Its certainly possible- Anything is right? The only thing I will point out is that the Hurcs haven't made any progress over the last two weekends scoring wise. Actually- If you take out the 1 point penalty from Lawrence, their score went DOWN last performance. Empire and Cabs have been jumping a few points every week.

If Cabs were going to make a move in the rankings- It HAS to be tomorrow. Otherwise they are going to be held to the back of the pack all the way to prelims. Cabs and Empire did not come out last weekend so tomorrows scoring should be very interesting!

Here are the current rankings for the corps competing in Kingston this Saturday. (Cut and Pasted from the 2011 Rankings thread)

    argum

You make a very good argument on your observation. Did you also happen to observe the direction change in The Hurcs percussion scores!!!!!!!

  7. John Sasso (on FH) would definitely be in the pic along with brother Teddy on bari ... not sure if Dorritie is in the pic ... other noteworthies would be Billy Hightower (bari) and "Dirty" Eddie Lawrence (FH) of Sky fame ... the Queensmen's last year on the field was 1962 ... same as Loretto and Cambridge ... lost quite a few top ranked corps in 61 and 62 ...

    :-)

Hi Andy,"CAKES" here. So could this have been the original cadet uni for Sun, or just the idea for it.

  8. Hi all, "CAKES" here. Of course if you marched in a Corps from the Boston area, I don't think anything could top a North End Parade. They were all held on a Sunday in the summer, with the Saint being honored carried down the streets, with sheets stretched out around the bottom. At most, the parade was a 1/2 mile, but they took about 6 hours to do. By the end all that was visible on the Saint was the face, they use to tape the bills like streamers from head to toe. We used to have to stop at every corner to play while they put more money on the statue, then form a line into the shrine, or club, or somebodys house, go in the front door, grab a sandweech, a shooter, and then a beer as you went out the back door, back into the line of march. This would go on all afternoon. About half way through people would start chang-ing instruments, to the point where no one was on their own. I'm saying there were times when all the drummers were playing horns and horn players were on the drums. By this time the parade powers that be just wanted lots of noise. As long as the sheets were getting full of money, they didn't seem to care.

  9. Renegades no longer at the Doubletree?? Bummer! I hope it wasn't something we said

Hi all, "CAKES" here. On a positive note ( I think, at least), I see that we'll be sharing our beautiful park again this year!!!!!!!!!!!!! Always great to see M.B.I. across the grass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Hope you have a great trip out to Scrantoon!!!!!!!!! Must be gearing up right about now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Safe voyage!!!

  10. Hi all, "CAKES" here. One of the strangest gigs I remember ever doing, and I thing it will take something supernatural to top this one, was with The Ct. Alumni. Every year we used to do an exhibition in West Haven, Ct., it was like a fair without rides, lots of food booths arts and crafts and such. One year, after we're finished, the horn instructor, Dave Negri, tells the Corps we have another gig at a local club. The place is a jazz club, "CAFE 9" in New haven, Ct. He said we didn't have time top eat or anything, that they were already waiting for us. So we get to the club, do a quick warm-up outside, then procede inside to set-up. Setting up meant squeezing nabout 32 horns, 9 snares, 6 bass drums, 11 flags and 6 honor guard in what space was left. We were placed in the space between the bar and the tables. It was about 30 feet long and maybe 6 feet wide. I think the major directed from behind the bar, with what looked like the assistance of the bartenders as they were grabbing bottles bouncing off the bar, and actually trying to hold the mirrors from crashing down. I believe the most common response from t5he regulars was that we were the loudest act they had ever heard in there!!!!!!!!!! Talk about deafening.

  11. Hi all, "CAKES" here. I was trying to reply to the "drink beer" part of the prior thread, but couldn't figure out how. Definite "SENIOR" moment. My take on this is that it's Drum Corps version of that Vegas thing....."What happens on D.C.I. tour stays on D.C.I. tour". Is it my imagination, or do some of us truly believe they are all 'Touring BANDS of Angels"!!!!!!!!!!!

I know tthis isn't what was intended by this thread, so lets get back to it. Would it benifit D.C.A. and the Open Class Corps by having #1 a better possibility of more shows, #2 benefit contest sponsors by having a possibility of more Corps in your show?

    "CAKES" :tongue::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

  12. These discussions are all well and good...for us I guess. However, what "junior" corps has really thought about DCA? And, for that matter, what "junior" corps has gone from DCI to DCA in the past 15 years? Actually, if I remember, one corps left DCA to go to DCI.

As much as we all try to solve the problems plaguing DCI "ain't no one in DCI listening!" I believe Vic was right when he mentioned this being discussed in another forum. Everyone has the right intentions but all we do is yap, yap, yap about this and for what reason? Many DCI corps still look at DCA as the "lets drink beer and get drunk" organization. I think that the DCA corps have changed that in the past 10 years and continue to improve on that. At this point, with the economy not getting better, wouldn't even make sense to merge DCA and DCI? I do like the regional competition ideas, always have been a fan of that. Problem is DCA has their mind set as does DCI and I could never see the leaders of both agreeing to meld the two together.

What is best for drum corps as a whole? How do the leaders of both organizations hold it together? DCA has grown and DCI has not but who gets the accolades? DCI.

Just wanted to throw my $0.02 in this topic before I go get my hair cut.

  13. I've been proposing this for some years now. Just a Jr. Division, what used to be Div. II and Div. III. A whole lot to be worked out on a logistics end, but just think of the added show possibillities for all. I've always believed this could make D.C.A. a much healthier place to be. We could have combined shows, and we could have divisional shows. A lot less likelihood that you would have shows with just 3 or 4 Corps in them. Just my thoughts.

  14. Hi all, "CAKES" here. The answer to your query would be Wolcott High School. The show was held on a practice field behind the school. Thye football field was to the rightr of the mpractice field, as you observed the contest from the side of the hill. I don't know the reason we couldn't use the stadium, could have been cost, more than likely the A.D. Vic, I can't remember the kids name, he was in The Hurcs snare line a few years prior to this show. He was involveds with running it. I'm not sure if he was the band director or an instructor there at the time. Stay well, hope to see some of you at a show this year. I'll be with The Hurcs. Also you can look me up at D.C.A. I&E, I believe I'll be working the SOPRANO/trumpet room, and, of course, I'll be at the Mini-Corps venue again. That is if I stay on the good side of Mr. Pronti!!

  15. One of my best friends and a former TBIRD was a converted BariSax player who played and excellent French horn bugle. How....? He has no LIPS.......( well....he really has LIPS.....but his mouth is essentially Flat) Now that I think about it.....we had (6) Frenchies who were really good but also ALL flat Lipped.

Never saw "PEPE" up close so I don't know if he was in that group. (Mike Siglow....white courtesy phone.....)

Pepe did the reverse of what an earlier post said about mello players using adapters and a french horn mouthpiece.Pepe had an adapter in his french horn that took a sop mouthpiece. I believe he used either a Parduba(sp.?) 5-star or a Giardanelli(sp.?)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In S.K.E.K., at one point, I believe the whole hornline used Rudi Mucks, and they were never too shabby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Yeah and he sounds a bit like Cliffy Klavin, too! He's got both bar stool covered, metaphorically speaking.

Know don't be making any snide remarks about my friend "RATZY" (John Ratzenberg to you}. I do believe he peruses these

pages now and then, and you don't want to get him ###### at you, he might have your mail dissappear!!!!!!!!!!!! Although, that could be a good thing depending onwhat type of mail you get.

  17. Ya think they'd let you put a cooler in the aisle?

Actually saw an ad for something called the Bolt Bus. Less seats so more leg room, electric outlets, wifi and the toilets flush.

Think Greyhound is running it. Supposed to be real reasonable.

Well, glad you made it back home. Those kind of problems really wear you out.

Before anyone starts any crazy rumor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The BOLT bus IS NOT owned nor operated by The Ct. Hurricanes. It is a division of Greyhound, which is owned by First Student, you know, the school bus company. They operate in a limited market area, express service. Boston to New York, New York to D.C. for a couple. They advertise one way for as little as a dollar! I don't know if that means the driver throws a rope out his window and you hang on and get dragged to your destination or not, but it seems it would be worth checking into.

I guess I can still ask how many horns ya got also !!! (43... very cool)

I heard there was a set of double bass kicking around when you wuz back at the Cardinal Cushing School So Boston in late 90's. It would be nice to get the "Prince of Tenor Drums" Freddie Cabral to play those puppies !!

It's going to be a big BAC week for me. DCA show with BAC sr and then DCI with BAC and BAC Sr.

I do beleive the person playing those drums in the picture, Mr. Tony Smith, will be present at Mission Drums as a judge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am looking forward to see the South in action!!

Hi Dick, "CAKES" here. Hope you have a great time down South. Give Vic a hug for me!!!!! Maybe you can bring a stack of applications with you for I&E and shake up a ton of early entries. Talk about a party atmosphere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I don't see you before, I'll definately see you in RaChaCha. Oh, and thanks for the concern in your other post. So far, all is well'
