  1. Now, if you really want to get into a discussion about judges:  How are judges selected for what shows and for what captions?  Try to get the answer to that.  Does DCI pick them out of a hat randomly?   Who makes the selections for the majors and finals week?  The head judge? The corps? the DCI artistic director? The DCI board?  Dan Aitcheson?  If you find out the answer to this, you get a gold star!!!!! Good luck!

Well, many would disagree, that's for sure BUT as to the call it as they see it statement. This statement was used often back in the day and doesn't hold water today. A judge will be called out and better have a good reason for the WHY's. BITD the conversation stopped with " I called it as I saw it " , no accountability.

Now, the drop statement. Unless it was a hot mess, drops are not judged as they were back in the day. If drops totally ruined an effect etc etc.thats a different story. It is looked at differently from the tic days.

Example: I believe it was BCoats: an effect that directed you even from corps to guard with the climax being a guard effect.

( single person ) they drop. effect lost.

Now with all that said YES it could be Cavies just had a bad day or someone had a better day. This also goes for a poster who said " Why did BDs guard beat Boston when it was the other way around a week ago. I don't even get a statement like that.

You are also right She has heard this kind of griping about her in the past.

I am sure Deborah can back up why she called (judged) a show the way she did.  She would not continue to consistently be a judge at majors for as long as she has if she couldn't.

As far as drops go, you are correct, drops are not judged as they once were ie.... a tick per drop etc... but, make no mistake about it.  If you have numerous drops, especially at high impact moments, and the momentum of the moment is disrupted by it, or you see drops outright numerous times throughout a show, you will be docked for it.  With so many good guards and only tenths separating some from others, if  a guard with basically the same level of difficulty, but one is dropping more than the other, the less dropping corps is going to get the judges tenth over the other. Same goes for timing issues

  3. Deborah, has been around for many years.  She is one of the top judges and calls it like she sees it.....and will not be intimidated.  She has heard this kind of griping before.  Every corps at one time or another through the years has been on the critical side of Deborah.   It often makes corps work harder and take a good look at themselves.  Hard to pull the wool over her eyes.  Could it be cavies just didn't have a good show?  She will not reward you for drops or timing issues that is a given.

Are you offering me the position?

I dont have that authority, but as with many, all seem to have an idea what is best for Madison,.... but talk is cheep.  I encourage all who think they know what is best, to contact Madison and offer your time, money, and take on a position of leadership and accountability rather than just talking about it.  Its very easy to criticize and tear down, its the building up that is difficult part, the part most run from.

Will the director and executive director resign after semis?  If not, will the board (which apparently is a rubber stamp for the ED) remove them?  If not, will there be vets with pitchforks and lighted torches at the gates?  These are, in my opinion, the most important questions to be answered.

Are you volunteering to be on the board or to be the director????

I disagree with that. Since prelims seeding is NOT a random draw and is based on the average of all three regionals (San Antonio, Atlanta, and Allentown), some of the close races literally come down to Allentown. A few that come to mind:

    Boston vs. Cavies
San Antonio: Cavies over Boston by 0.162
Atlanta: Boston over Cavies by 0.025

    Blue Stars vs. Blue Knights
San Antonio: BK over BS by 0.187
Atlanta: BS over BK by 0.325

    Spirit vs. Academy
San Antonio: Academy over Spirit by 1.537
Atlanta: Spirit over Academy by 1.663

too bad that Blue Stars, Cadets and Blue Knights are not preforming on the same night in Allentown.  Would like to see them back to back.  Blue Stars seem to have a lot of momentum right now

water on the field was deemed a potential safety hazard several years ago, along with things like powder.

I was going to say, I thought water was barred from the field due to safety reasons.  If I am not mistaken, I think that rule went into effect following the year Magic did the pirate show spewing water all over the field and making it slippery for the corps following them.

No guard judge tonight, so VA scores were doubled.

    Yikes, Madison percussion.

Stars may have done even better if a guard judge had been there.  Guard has been one of their stronger captions.  although not at the same show, the gap keeps getting smaller between Blue Stars and Cadets.  Now within a point, if this trend continues, should be interesting going into finals week.  Time will tell, Atlanta should be interesting.

Here's a big question: do you mean legendary in the context of highly-loved, or game-changing?

Personally it seems like we have one TRULY game-changing show once every 13 years or so, starting with SCV '89, then Cavies '02, then Bloo '16. These shows really changed the course of the sport. (Also not to dis Star '93, that would definitely be an honorable mention on this list)

Then there's highly-loved, like E=mc^2 or Spartacus. Fantastic show, but it didn't really change DCI forever. This is where I think Babylon will fall.

I would add early 80's Cadets to this list.  I can remember sitting in the stands watching the Cadets fast paced drill and z pull for the first time and thinking to myself I could not believe what I was seeing.  That type of drill, and fast paced  marching just blew me away.  I thought to myself no one was anywhere close to doing something like that at the time and just wow.  Hard to believe that when looking at the old tapes today and what corps are doing now, but at the time it was mind blowing.  It is really fun to be apart of seeing something like this.  When a show reaches the legendary level you will know it.... you will have a sense of jaw dropping awe you simply cannot explain unless you experience it.

  10. to me a legendary show has to transform and transcend the activity.  Set a new standard and move the activity in a different direction not anticipated or seemingly possible at the time its initiated.    Dispite being very good,  not sure SCV reaches that threshold with this show.

It's looking more and more like the battle for 12th will be between Spirit, The Academy and surprisingly Crossmen.  Mandarins might go as high as 10th by beating Phantom but I think they make their top 12 debut in 11th.   I see Phantom and Blue Knights in 9th and 10th.  Blue Stars has a lock on 8th, but a strong surge in the end might get them into 7th topping Cadets.

I agree completely with this post.  Real battle shaping up for the 12 spot

Clean those feet and clean that percussion!!

As the cleaning continues to happen in all areas and the planned changes are put in, well, we will see where the stars sore to.  Is a very fan friendly, engaging, fun, but technical show for sure.  Be it tape measures,  wood, hammers, or extension cord choreography,  all sections are engaged and doing added work throughout the show!  Not to mention they are actually MARCHING!  Pay particular attention to the hammer work and interaction work with the sawhorses the guard does..... divine for sure.  And those un-mic'ed horns (except for soloists)  nice nice nice!!. Watching this show on video (TV) does not do it justice.  You need to see it live to capture it all.  Most importantly, the kids are preforming the hell out of this show and genuinely appear to be enjoying their time out on the field.  What a breath of fresh air!!!!!!!! GO BLUE STARS!!!!!!!!!!
