  1. I dunno, it may have been too much amp on SCV's pit, but I'm wondering if there was a problem with the overhead boom mike level dropping out. It seemed Bluecoats brass sound started out weak, too, then the level rose about 1/3 through their show. Could it have been a technical error in the production?

IMO, SCV's pit wasn't the only one with a balance problem. And I didn't see an abundance of "concert technique" in the higher dynamic parts of the shows. They're still banging away on the keys, and the amps just add to it.

I noticed that as well, SCV's pit was hugely loud, and then I noticed that BC's brass line seemed a bit weak, that could possibly be the issue.

  3. what do you mean "had to sit out the rest of the show???" because he didn't catch the stick!?!!?!! didn't he have an extra stick in the bag???

I have no idea, he dropped the stick, looked all sad for the rest of the drum break, walked off the field towards one of the speakers and stood there for the rest of the show.

and for the Crossmen. I don't know why they're scoring so low, but they're definetely better. It's sort of the same as Vanguard this year, everyone says they're a lot better, but so is everyone else, so they're still placing similar. The issue with their show could well be difficulty, it's still a little sloppy, as it's only the 8th show for them (if the person above me is correct).

  4. So my only other review is from DatR last year. Hopefully this will be better.

Blue Stars: My Placement: 6 Actual Placement: 6

A nice show. They have excellent brass moments all throughout. I saw a couple people nearly fall on the grass. The amplification didn't work, shorted out on the guy, so I have nothing to say on that. I liked their drill design. Simple, yet sophisticated. It was a beautiful show to say the least. Music is their strength in LaCrosse.

Seattle Cascades: My Placement: 7 Actual Placement: 7

Alrighty. If this is the lowest scoring corps in DCI, dang DCI is good. I loved some of their impact points during the opener and middle of the show. They had a wonderful sound at times, yet at times, something was lacking. I think it was probably control, people horns took control occasionally. A nice drumline though. I enjoyed their show. It had its cool moments, it just needs some work. Drill was actually pretty nice.

Crossmen: My Placement: 5 Actual Placement: 5

My suprise of the night. Lately for me the Crossmen have always been a "yeah they're pretty good" corps. Tonight they blew me away. After seeing last year, this seems like a completely different corps. Plus Bones was there in the back, can't get any better. The drill is tons better than last year, and I love Pat Metheny music. The part as they're going through the radio is amazing. The best use of amplification in history in my books. Their amps were the only one's that worked properly with amplified voice. Great show, hope they go far.

Santa Clara Vanguard: My Placement: 3 Actual Placement: 3

I went and saw their rehearsal yesterday, it paid off. They had a good show tonight. Lots of energy. It still seemed a bit dirty to me for the middle of July, but it is a hard show visually, so I understand. The music was great minus the people yelling Vanguard at the wrong point and the announcement for season pass coming over the loudspeaker. I do like the change that something is moving at all points of the show, no matter when. They are doing well this year, they just need to keep on chugging. They were the cause of my new corps shirt tonight!

The Cadets: My Placement: 2 Actual Placement: 2

Their show is busy. It's definetely amazingly clean though. They have a bit much running around the field. Amps for the lady in red weren't working, all of her stuff went unheard. Snare didn't catch the stick while on the pink bench, had to sit out the rest of the show. Suprisingly, I liked it, after all I read on here, it wasn't near that bad. It was actually sorta good. I loved loved loved after the drum break going into the ballad, how the corps began playing the ballad, while the drumline was being a "train" off in the back and slowly getting quieter. Definetely my favorite part! Good show though, don't believe what you read.

The Cavaliers: My Placement: 1 Actual Placement: 1

An amazing first half, a very good second half. I agree with most of what has been said lately on these boards. The new ending does help a bit, but it still loses some steam near the end. They first half the corps sells the show like none other, it is too awesome for words. They are really clean, with some good old Cavaliers drill that we all know and love. Thanks for a great show, love to see it come August.

Blue Knights: My Placement: 4 Actual Placement: 4

One of my favorite Blue Knight shows. Still doens't pass '99, but a great show nonetheless. They were cleaner than SCV, but the drill seemed a little easier. Wow, they were extremely loud, I was suprised at their volume they could get out. Love the style of marching and the body movement, a nice trademark thing for BK. It was amazing to see them perform for the home crowd, they never seem to disappoint. Hopefully, they can continue to make minor adjustments and move up the rankings.

Well, overall it was a marvelous night, I had a great time. Sad not to see the Troopers there, but I bought the "Legends Never Die" shirt, as should the rest of you. Continue supporting drum corps everyone!

  5. I went for the 6:30 to 9:00 block. About 6:30-7:30 they worked solely on the closer in medium sized chunks. After that they cleaned up a "tag ending" (which is cool). Then worked the opener and ballad in chunks. It's starting to look quite clean, and the playing was magnificent for after an entire day's work of practice. I heard earlier people complaining that since the name of the show is "Moto Perpetuo" they should always be moving, well basically there is something always moving throughout the show. A lone trumpet players moves in a square around the field throughout the show. It was cool as all get-out.

  6. Predicted order of finish:

    1. Cavaliers

    2. Cadets

    3. Santa Clara Vanguard

    4. Blue Knights

    5. Crossmen

    6. Blue Stars

    7. Seattle Cascades

    I think the battles will be between 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6

I agree with that. Maybe switch the 3 and 4. I'll make a prediction after I go watch SCV rehearse today at 6 ish.
