Day Show

General overview

Great seats and great to see old friends from the activity. A beautiful hotel and a wonderful week end for a get away to Atlanta !!

Good

Troopers back on the field !! The capes in Crossmen show introduction !! Madison's entrance !! Glassmens guard costumes !! Bostons Percussion and overall Energy !! Colts look !!

The bad

Best part of some shows done before judging starts . Guard costumes that make me under why ??

The Ugly

Drill that students do not have the strength to achieve. Starts and stops. Uniformity of technique.

Night Show

Spirit -- Moving more than they have but not always sure why and where the show is going . Evrrything is ok but nothing stuck out to me as over the top. I would like to see them develope one or 2 moments they are more than safe.Hide and seek could be that place on the high and low end. A good drum corps but not convinced they will hold on to make finals in the end.

Glassmen--Guard gets it but could the rest of the corps buy into as well ?? They march well. They play well. But for me didnt take any moments and wow me with the theme or identity. Felt more like a cat toying with ball of string .

Colts--The corps proper uniforms are more mature than ever in the history of the corps. IMHO.Brass and music ensemble are an issue at times. But the show works.Well coordinated effects . Seems to be more reasons and resolves to what they present .Basily i like them,

Blue Knights-- I apologize but i missed you tonight .

Boston-- Way stronger in the evening than in day show. Music ensemble was on tonight !! Designers choice but i felt there are 3 places in the show where the guard could match the intensity of the music better and the audience would have exploded for them.

SCV-I do love this show !!!!! Guard uniforms work well and the guard is creative and effective.Great drill and some very clever effects .

Crown --Best response of the night . This concept works and works well. The guard is wonderful!! The horn line covers a vast array of style and color. The drum line is getting stronger. But most important to me is They made me clap and stand !!!! I have not checked the recaps but the show felt like it should have placed in the top 4 or 5 in Effect .

Bluecoats-- I do like the show alot . however, it felt flat to me tonight . Could just be me . But they lost me in the middle of the show and got me back some at the end. I cant really explain what or why so i am sticking with flat .May not be a matter of if they can catch the 4 in front but if they can hold off the 2 behind them.

Phantom--Loved the guard !!! The horn line seemed on to me tonight and i felt that this corps and show could make a run to the end.

Cavies--All i can say is " Visual eye candy " !!! It is very entertaining and works way better for me live than on streaming video.

Cadets--WOW !!! what a drill !! what a hornline !! what a percusssion section !!!-- that said. I am not negative about voice overs or narration. But i did feel that the rehearsal section goes on too long with too much dialogue. But is clear to me why they are in the hunt to win. They are that good !!!!!!!!

Blue Devils--Called it and i was lucky and right . I felt they won the show tonight . I think the drum lines must use a GPS systm to do the drill they are simply everywhere on the field . Extremely clever percussion staging and effects. They march like no ones business and i felt like it was one of the most effective BD guards maybe ever !!

All the above said it was my opinion on one night in Atlanta . And what a great night it was . The top 7 , as has beens stated all year, are that GOOD !!!!!.

There is not one finalist i didnt like in some way .I left the night happy and feeling very good about drum corps and the state of the activity. God Bless every member and helper and staff person on the road . I know the grind and you can see it in the faces . Collectively it was a great show and all should be proud of what they are doing !! The run to the end is going to be close and very interesting to watch . What else can you ask for ??

Wasn't it a great day! Each show was different, ALL were entertaining, and they just kept coming at you. Just one right after the other. Getting better and better each time. Regionals are something else. A whole different experience from the smaller shows. If you live anywhere close to one, go! (Preaching to the choir here, I'm sure.) Mixing and mingling with the kids waiting to get dinner or after the show, brings the experience to a personal level. What a great activity. I'll add my thanks to all for some fabulous performances.

Nice review Jeff. Would have been nice seeing you in Atlanta but I settled for a couple of quick trips over to Tennessee.....the Murf on Friday and Sevierville tomorrow night.

Why don't we do a tour again sometime soon?

I couldn't agree with you more on your review. Plus, that saves me from writing one of my own which btw I am not qualified to do. I'll just add a few comments and let it go at that.

Cadets- My favorite corps, the reason I am a fan. This show gave me goosebumps and an over the top cringe factor rating all at the same time. The show is awesome and they leave it all on the field. WOW just doesn't seem strong enough. BUT....the narration is too much. I couldn't understand half of it and that caused a distraction from an otherwise great performance. Several times the crowd's response drowned out the next set of talking which left me feeling a bit frustrated. I hope they reduce the chatter a lot more. I think that it is hurting them. IMO, besides the chit-chat they should have won hands down.

Cavies- They are brilliant visually but I take issue with the amount of time they keep their horns down. Several times throughout their performance the pit and/or the drums kept the tune going while the corps performed visual eye candy. In any given year where they're able to get that balance it's no wonder no one can touch them. IMO, this year the balance if off. They def have musical talent but IMO the hornline should play more to really show that off.

EDIT- I just noticed an entire thread dedicated to the amount of time the Cavies spend with their horns down. Really, I'm just happy to see that I'm not the only person who's noticed this over the past few years. Again, I think it is a brilliant move on their part and I've often wondered why other corps aren't doing the same. Hey, if it isn't broken why fix it, right?

Normally I dislike domes because of the way the music sounds. I didn't notice it that much in Atlanta. Good thing too because it drizzled all day. I look forward to attending this show again and again. Thanks DCI for bringing a regional to the SE at a good point in the season. Remember- most places offer affordable airfare to Atlanta and you can catch a ride on the MARTA over to the dome. This is a great show to put on your calendars.

Yeah........had the same conversation with yet another old driver friend that I ran into at Murfreesboro right before we headed to our respective hotels. We had like 9 or 10 separate corps between us. Drum corps shows are a lot of fun when you don't have to drive 500 miles as soon as they're over!
