Darryl Jones' Brass Advantage

Sorry guys, but it makes me cringe every time I see the "Wayne Downey's Brass Disadvantage" thread.

The guy has spent 30+ years creating a brand for himself, and now has an outstanding web site that serves the brass playing community quite well.

To have a running image of a play on terminology he uses as part of his marketing is unfair.

His contribution to brass education and how it has enhanced THIS activity is unquestioned.

To see "Wayne Downey's Brass Disadvantage" is akin to seeing, instead of "Ford Motor Company," seeing "Ford Deathtrap Company," or instead of "Dell Computers," seeing "Dell Soul-Draining Machines," or instead of seeing "National Broadcasting Company," seeing "National Make Your Kids Fat and Lazy Company."

You certainly wouldn't see those tag lines on sites where Ford, Dell, or NBC do business.

See what I mean?

If you guys want to keep up an ongoing conversation of the aero-dynamics of brass playing at least change the thread title.

The DCP honchos should also consider how this mangling of a featured columnist's tag line affects this site. After all, a huge part of the success of DCP can be attributed to Wayne's supporters who abandoned another drum corps newsgroup.

Lastly, from a more pedagogical standpoint: If you teach a corps like the CorpsVets (or any All-Age Corps), and you spend even 10 minutes of your adult volunteers' precious rehearsal time talking about the "science" of wind shear, then that's just bad time management.

PS: If you use the word "pedagogical" in ANY adult learning situation, you should be fired.

I can certainly see your point that none of the above companies would want to be associated with a negative tag line. Any company or organization that is trying to sustain a brand would not want a negative image to be portrayed.

But does that change the facts?

I think the poster was trying to be clever and a better title might have been something like, "How I disagree with Wayne Downey's Brass Advantage".

PS. I didn't use the word "pedagogical", you did.

I don't think DCP gives you the option of changing the thread title. I know I've tried in the past when I misspelled Kanstul, and was unable to do so. Not that the title couldn't be changed, but it's not something left up to us lowly users. Even if we wanted to change it.

Hey, I just know you blow into the small end and stuff comes out the biggun'......

Not defending Darryl's thread title or his science, but isn't starting this thread every bit - if not more - wrong as his?

Report it if you feel so strongly.

I find that it satisfactorily answers that whole "back pressure x the speed of light / last tuesday's lunch bill" equation thing........

Gimme a giant freakin break, Tom!

How much time has Wayne. (And others) Spent flappin their gums in front of hornlines about the so-called "science" of air-speed, tongue arch, oral resonance YADA -Yada! The collective time wasted preaching this bull is off the charts!

In the course of teaching CV in the past these things were most definitely NOT part of the process.

We breathed, we buzzed, we sang, we stretched, we played music. How dare you suggest that I did such!

Now aside from the rehearsals, if someone cares to listen, I will certainly offer my opinion.

Wayne has served up some real disinformation in his article. I did not intend to be disrespectful. I am SURE he meant well. And I think if you actually read the thread you will not glean any personal disrespect.

The thread title change is fine. I was attempting to generate some interest. Who ever goes to the brass forum, really?

And you will be happy to know Tom, that I never used the word "pedogogical" in front of CV either.

Now, "Pornographical" .. maybe that was used a few times.

Fine. And trust me, it isn't personal; it's just the title of the thread appearing in front of this community's eyeballs.

You have a very detailed disagreement with one element of Wayne Downey's pedagogy (Ding! 10 points!).

I have never, and would never put that much thought into the science you're talking about, and I've been around and/or played next to some of the greats (Roland Garceau, Joey Pero, Melvin Johnson).

As I think of the horn lines I played in with Empire (89-96 - couple rings, couple horn trophies, buncha ensemble medals), I can't help but think that if someone laid any of that "science" on us for more than 30 seconds, it would be "check please."

And while teaching the Brigs with Wayne and his disciples (99-2001), I don't remember them spending a lot of time on that. Maybe they did, I was on the Visual Staff.

Your problem was with the column, but the thread was turning into a commentary on Wayne's apparently sham-based career.

Ironically, the most effective thing I ever heard a brass instructor say to a horn line was, "Don't S**k!" Now THAT science is irrefutable.
