Rockmart Thoughts and Review of Sorts.........

Recommended Posts

The whole family was our to check out the Rockmart show. My wife and I were struggling with a sick two year old, but enjoyed the weather a lot. Just some thoughts for anyone who cares:

Sun Devils:

Welcome to DCA!!! Keep building on the strong foundation you have laid! Entertaining show.

Side Note: Please add a button on the uniform, about mid way down. When your member are standing with proper posture.. the jacket looks like a wing. Button it down and you will improve the look of the corps right away.

Sound:

Great to see you guys are still going strong. You are the essence of passion for this activity!

MCL:

It is getting better every year! Battery... is spot on! Very clean playing. Very dirty drill. If you cant get your starts and stops down..... it does not matter what you sound like. Your visual mistakes take away from your musical perfection. Hornline ..... sounded pretty well. Get control of your emotions and it will help with some over playing at times. Guard... I had a hard time with the character development. You costuming was great, but the use of them left me wanting a better story.

Note: Please change the GA/TN waltz tune. If you want to play GA... play GA. If you want to play the TN waltz.... Play the TN waltz. In my opinion... The Pride of The Southland Band at Tennessee play a much more respectful version of the TN Waltz in 3/4. Youtube and learn it.

Alliance:

(I had to watch this show from the front sideline, with sick son.) Wow! You have come along way! Keep at it. Very well put together show from the design stand point. Guard... has made very nice progress. Hornline.... nothing that really made me remember anything. Drumline...... There is no doubt that you can play many many notes. Get a hold of your emotions and you could take top drums at DCA. LOTS of small passages, following intricate and clean parts, that you took for granted. The great ones dont over look the small stuff. Every note is important.

Because I was so close I will comment on feet and technique only. I watched the hornlines visual warm up out in the parking lot, and it looked exactly like that on the field. Over all you move well. A 1/4 of line is holding the rest back. Seek someone out and address your areas of opportunities. Spend more time on moving well together, rather than running awful individually.

CV:

Looks good. Clark, Stacy, and Hunter are on fire!. Gaurd..... you divas earned your crown tonight! Congrats. Hornline.... sounds very good! Suggestion: If the inner baritone voice would play out, this hornline would sound completely balanced. Contras are spot on as usual. Drumline..... Basses are smoking tonight. Loved it. Tenors are executing the part well. Both look young but that didint keep them from holding their own. Snares...... first half of show was great. The rest of the show you should work on. It almost looked and sounded like you threw in the towel after your last feature. Timing, attacks, everything was out of sorts. When things start falling apart, playing louder does not help. The feature was clean and confident. I think the biggest distraction for me watching this show is a few design issues. The ballad sounded well executed, but I didnt feel where it was supposed to go. The visual design was ok, but as in the past few years looked a bit pedestrian. Tweak a few things and this show could be great!

Side note..... CV Snares: As a vet of this corps, I am sadly disappointed. How could you accept the honor of playing everyone on, when you couldnt play the street beat? Very embarrassing and disrespectful of your uniform. ::rant off::

About the topic:

In my opinion, Alliance should have won this show by at least .5 of a point. Home field advantage has its advantages, so happy Christmas in August CV. Keep working on your shows guys!!! This was, by far, THE BEST DCA ROCKS THE SOUTH SHOW EVER!!!!

Thanks! A commentator once referred to Shennandoah Sound as "The toughest SOBs in DCA!"

CV:

They were so hot! They tripped the sprinklers on the field during their encore performance!

Patrick, thanks for all your thoughts about our corps and show, it's a new thing to have some "bulletin board clippings" from an actual alumni of the corps.

A note about the drumline "accepting the honor of playing everyone on". They found out about it when the rest of us did, in the lot after our performance so they weren't really prepared for "the honor". I thought they did pretty good under the circumstances.

The other review posted was also from a CV alumnus - 2004 snare line, I believe.

Thanks for pointing that out, I realize Bernard Green is a CV Alumnus. His reviews have always been fair and I've never had an issue with his writing. My only reason to post here was to clear up any misconceptions of why our battery played the corps on to the field.

I won't make excuses for my group, it's just not what we do. If we are handed less than perfect circumstances the CV motto is "Semper Gumby" (Always Fexible). We just deal with it.

The OP insulted a section of our corps by saying they had embarrassed themselves and disrespected the uniform (something CV takes very seriously).

He was not correct in his assumption.

I see - I didn't know if you remembered him or not since he only marched with CV one year. Personally, I thought your show was very good - I watched all of it and that was my third opportunity to see it in full. It's always fun to hear Hunter throw down and the guard is outstanding as usual, but I would expect no less from them anyway because you've got great people in it.

Thanks Terry, as a marching member (12 years now) I have only seen Alliance from the side so far. From the lot I'll say that the Alliance marching members are exactly what any corps is looking for, well behaved, respectful, good natured people. Me and a few of yours shared a few surplus hotdogs from the concession stand after the show. You'd never know we were "local rivals".

Semper Gumby is the motto. I was unaware of the situation leading up to retreat. I was only speaking as a "Alumni Fan In The Stands", in response to what I saw/heard in front of me before retreat. .I am sure you will accept my apologies and pass them on to the boys in the battery.

I am not sure what "bulletin board clippings" are. I was simply giving my opinion, both likes and dislikes, on every unit at the show. Maybe my expectations are a little higher than some would like, but as I said in my original post: That was the best show put on in Rockmart so far.

Best of luck to all of the performers at Finals.
