  1. I believe you are referring to Jeff Wright as the horn player. He not only had two daughters in Spirit but met his wife of 25 years in Spirit. He also had a son in Spirit. Both daughters married drum corps folks. One with Spirit and yes I am the odd ball having marched Glassmen. With any luck our sister n law will be marching in DCI soon. She has many years of eligiblilty left! Anybody have a clip of this performance?
  2. Regardless of the scores.... both corps need to get back to rehersal and these shows need to be 100% come September. Its time southern potential and expectations met accountability. I know both corps can do it!
  3. We will be there. Greyson says he would like to play his big tuba.
  4. Semper Gumby is the motto. I was unaware of the situation leading up to retreat. I was only speaking as a "Alumni Fan In The Stands", in response to what I saw/heard in front of me before retreat. .I am sure you will accept my apologies and pass them on to the boys in the battery. I am not sure what "bulletin board clippings" are. I was simply giving my opinion, both likes and dislikes, on every unit at the show. Maybe my expectations are a little higher than some would like, but as I said in my original post: That was the best show put on in Rockmart so far. Best of luck to all of the performers at Finals.
  5. The whole family was our to check out the Rockmart show. My wife and I were struggling with a sick two year old, but enjoyed the weather a lot. Just some thoughts for anyone who cares: Sun Devils: Welcome to DCA!!! Keep building on the strong foundation you have laid! Entertaining show. Side Note: Please add a button on the uniform, about mid way down. When your member are standing with proper posture.. the jacket looks like a wing. Button it down and you will improve the look of the corps right away. Sound: Great to see you guys are still going strong. You are the essence of passion for this activity! MCL: It is getting better every year! Battery... is spot on! Very clean playing. Very dirty drill. If you cant get your starts and stops down..... it does not matter what you sound like. Your visual mistakes take away from your musical perfection. Hornline ..... sounded pretty well. Get control of your emotions and it will help with some over playing at times. Guard... I had a hard time with the character development. You costuming was great, but the use of them left me wanting a better story. Note: Please change the GA/TN waltz tune. If you want to play GA... play GA. If you want to play the TN waltz.... Play the TN waltz. In my opinion... The Pride of The Southland Band at Tennessee play a much more respectful version of the TN Waltz in 3/4. Youtube and learn it. Alliance: (I had to watch this show from the front sideline, with sick son.) Wow! You have come along way! Keep at it. Very well put together show from the design stand point. Guard... has made very nice progress. Hornline.... nothing that really made me remember anything. Drumline...... There is no doubt that you can play many many notes. Get a hold of your emotions and you could take top drums at DCA. LOTS of small passages, following intricate and clean parts, that you took for granted. The great ones dont over look the small stuff. Every note is important. Because I was so close I will comment on feet and technique only. I watched the hornlines visual warm up out in the parking lot, and it looked exactly like that on the field. Over all you move well. A 1/4 of line is holding the rest back. Seek someone out and address your areas of opportunities. Spend more time on moving well together, rather than running awful individually. CV: Looks good. Clark, Stacy, and Hunter are on fire!. Gaurd..... you divas earned your crown tonight! Congrats. Hornline.... sounds very good! Suggestion: If the inner baritone voice would play out, this hornline would sound completely balanced. Contras are spot on as usual. Drumline..... Basses are smoking tonight. Loved it. Tenors are executing the part well. Both look young but that didint keep them from holding their own. Snares...... first half of show was great. The rest of the show you should work on. It almost looked and sounded like you threw in the towel after your last feature. Timing, attacks, everything was out of sorts. When things start falling apart, playing louder does not help. The feature was clean and confident. I think the biggest distraction for me watching this show is a few design issues. The ballad sounded well executed, but I didnt feel where it was supposed to go. The visual design was ok, but as in the past few years looked a bit pedestrian. Tweak a few things and this show could be great! Side note..... CV Snares: As a vet of this corps, I am sadly disappointed. How could you accept the honor of playing everyone on, when you couldnt play the street beat? Very embarrassing and disrespectful of your uniform. ::rant off:: About the topic: In my opinion, Alliance should have won this show by at least .5 of a point. Home field advantage has its advantages, so happy Christmas in August CV. Keep working on your shows guys!!! This was, by far, THE BEST DCA ROCKS THE SOUTH SHOW EVER!!!!
  6. The only thing that would make it better would be some historical footage of Crunchy Frog. On a serious note..... Couldnt local TV stations use these spots as the required non-profit filler that they are required to have? If so... every DCA local show should see if they could run it.
  7. I found no difficulty marching on the right foot with the Glassmen. We did it, because right foot lead was based in dance. To my knowledge, Cadets dont dance so that theory goes out the window........ hmmmmm.
  8. I have a Kanstul Power Bore Bugle that I purchased from Phantom. In good condition. PM me if you are interested.
  9. I remember the first rehersal in 1994 for Gigalo. Not a fun experience! The loved it when we trooped it off though.
  10. Pee on your feet in the shower. Wash your mouth piece out everyday. Dont make out with someone who is sick. Bring a blanket on the bus. You're a Flintsonte Kid.....take vitamins. Stay hydrated. Dont drink the Purple Monkey in the Wiscosin Dells.
  11. That Life Magazine came out in 93 I believe. As far as the game show.... that was orientation camp in 94. I believe we were paid for that bit of the show. Good times!!!
  12. Michael, My wife and I live in Phenix City. We are longtime vets of CV, but unfortunatley we are no longer marching. If you could get yourself to Newnan, there are several members and a drum major who live there. You might look into taking Groom Transportation to Newnan and then catch a ride from there. They make trips every 30 minutes to and from Columbus to the airport. They make stops in Lagrange and Newnan. Hope this helps.
  13. I must say I loved playing the Kings! I too have played the Degs for many years. While my shoulder was a little slow to accept the horn, but playing it was fantastic!
  14. In 94, we did not find out about the OJ car chase and arrest until a month after it happend. We were executing a "rape and pillage" of a grocery store and we saw it on the cover of People. Man.... life before cell phones and the internet.
  15. I believe we also worked tempos with a silent run? That made my head hurt.
  16. Nikk, I know several folks from UGA that have marched DCI. I think in 2002 Cavies Drum Major was at UGA. Several folks from Spirit are still there. Some Glassmen folks have come through Athens as well. Hope this helps..
  17. I think Cavies made a mad dash at the end of 95 to Finally beat BD in Semi Finals. I believe BD was undefeated from the start of 94 till then end of 05. Memory is fuzzy but if one of you score wizards will look it up..... I might be dead wrong.
  18. You might also try Aquaphor. I have used it in every race I have run, and never had an issue. It is pretty affordable and is water based, not a petroleum. This stuff has saved my nipples, gooch, and thighs from running for over 4 hours straight. As far as Green Bond aka Christmas on the Balls goes, I use it all the time just for the "awakening"!!!!
  19. As far as trainers go, we had a physical trainer and a nurse on tour both years that I marched. Sid (the trainer) helped member stretch out pulls, tape ankles, and he evaluted injuries. Having torn up my ankle my rookie year (during a pick up game of basketball at a Boy Scout Meeting), Sid sat me down and let me know the advantages vs disadvantages of taping my ankle up and rehersing on it. I believe his time on tour was an internship for graduation requirements in college. Nurse Mary was also vital to my tour life. I had a problem in the testicle region of my body due to impact. Nurse Mary checked for a hernia and escorted me to the local hospital in Dixon Illinois. (another wonderful story for another time) After a few days rest, and some super tight briefs from Wal-Mart, I was back on the field in a few days. If the corps want such personel on tour, they must seek them out. I don't believe either of our medical staff was well paid, but they both were on tour. $ isnt always the answer when you develope those kind of relationships.
  20. After reading several posts in this thread, I decided to play my hand.......... There have always been and always will be injuries in Drum Corps. There is a great amount of "ask" that the activity puts on one's body and mind. You push your body to be at it's peak levels for two or so months all summer. It is natural to experience overuse injuries. These include knee pain, which in most cases is caused by not strecthing and overusing your IT band, that runs from your hip to your knee. I have done a lot of research on this topic, as I have experienced IT band issues while training for marathons. To further this point, the members are offered much advice and time for proper stretching everyday. I have been to countless rehersals where many of the members use this as throw away time. Simply half ###ing the strecthing or not doing it. That to me appears as a choice on the members behalf, to not take care of one's body. Another thought....... yep marching contra (tuba) is not natural or for everyone. I marched many years with a contra on my shoulder. However, I always made sure that my back and core where in shape to handle it. DCI calls itself "Marching Music's Major League.". Well guess what folks, part of being a professional is doing what it takes in the off season to be at your best when the season starts. It is not hoping your body will catch up with you as the season progresses. It seems to me that the argument of "we are hurting the members by putting more demanding shows out there" is a another way to say "we should include everyone in the activity for the sake of fairness".I don't buy that at all. If you are going to be "Marching Music's Major League", not everyone is going to make it, or has the body to make it. Take a look at any other professional league........ for every 1 major leaguer, there are 25 that didnt make it past college, the minor leagues, semi-pro teams, or even got cut from their high school team. For those 25 that didn't make it, I am sure they have taken away some of the best life lessons any human could ask for. Desire, failure, effort, humility, etc.... all make for a great adult. I won't apologize for the rant, but come on...... some kids are just not cut out for DCI. Some kids dont want to put in the effort it takes to be at their best in DCI. And finally some kids are probably paying the price for some parents thinking that every little "Stevie or Susie" should have the right to participate regardless of thier mental make up or physique.
