what clef?

my BD explained the whole deal to me, that like on my sousaphone, C is 1/3 but on Contra C would be something else regardless of whether it's in bass or treble clef, so I guess I'll give over and write in fingerings...

A written C on a bass clef contra part would be the same fingering as a written C on a sousaphone part. If it's a written C in treble clef, however, it's open.

Just get a trumpet fingering chart (some are available online). If they ask you to play an exercise that's not written out, just mentally shift it down a whole step...if they say "Play a C major scale," you play what you usually call a B-flat major scale.
