ajw
Music in the Mountains Asheville, NC June 26, 2007 Show Review: SPARTA started off the night here in Asheville. The gave a great show that the crowd enjoyed. Their brass was amazing with one of the highest brass scores of Division 3 that night. Their GE, color guard, and music ensemble scores were not up to par and put them below their Division 3 counterpart Dumb Dogs. Dumb Dogs came on next and thoroughly entertained the crowd. They put on a great show that won Division 3. Their General Effect was amazing and won Division 3 for them. The visual and music scores for Dumb Dogs and SPARTA were about equal when added together. First up for Division 2 was Malicious Mallards. They put on an outstanding show that would take the Division 2 title for the night. Their brass, music ensemble, and color guard dominated Division 2. Their visual scores were slightly lower than some of the other Division 2 corps, which brought the final scores close together. Velocity came on next and gave another great show. Their “Freedom, Jazz, Dance” show was very entertaining. The crowd loved it. They came extremely close to beating Malicious Mallards. The final scores had Velocity only .034 behind Malicious Mallards. They came out with the best GE score in Division 2 with their GE Music score almost a full point above every one else. Next up was Sunset Sound. Even though they came in last place for Division 2, they put on an outstanding show. Their won High Drums for Division 2, but their other musical areas were lacking. If they could increase their music score they would have been right in the fight for first. The Charioteers were the last corps on before the break. Their show all about Aaron Copland was another crowd pleaser, but the brass didn’t seem to be able to keep up with the music. The visual aspect of their show is amazing, the best in Division 2 at this show. Their GE scores were what kept them from coming in first. Their GE scores were at least full point behind all the other Division 2 corps. Their score was still only .108 behind Malicious Mallards. After the break, Killer Kats came on. They got the crowd right back into the show. Their scores were about middle of the pack. With a little cleaning on both music and drill, they could push closer to the top. Ranger’s Arrow came on next with their 007 show. They put on a great performance for what they had. The crowd loved the classic Bond songs. The one part that kept them out of first and second was their Visual GE. I think they could increase the difficulty on their drill and they would be right in the running. Up next was Star of Jupiter. They put on an amazing show. It was very obvious why they are solidly in the Top 12 and very close to the Top 6. Their GE was amazing and the crowd was very involved in this Gladiator show. The only thing that kept them from winning by even a larger margin was their brass. They had the lowest brass score in Division 1. This corps still decisively won Division 1 by more than 1.5. The Westerners came on next. They seemed like a step down after Star of Jupiter. All of their scores came out at about the same level. Nothing really stood out. The two areas that were lacking more than others were the guard and drums. Maybe some more work on those two areas and they could start to move up. Last up was the hometown corps of Shadow. The crowd seemed to really enjoy seeing Shadow perform A Classical Journey for the first time. We were close to Star of Jupiter in most areas except Music GE. We had the best guard of the night and had better music scores than Star of Jupiter. We hope to improve our Music GE and start to compete with Star of Jupiter a little closer.
