xandandl
While some corps wait to design their shows based on what talent level walks through the doors for auditions, other corps actively seek out the talent needed through various pro-active recruiting methods. Information kiosks, posters, media, and school visitations are among the many methods used. Another is the collegiate marching band festivals where corps staffs and their scouts have a wonderful experience of soloists, strong sections, guards, and majors. For some it is akin to the professional sports try-out camps before teams request/invite certain participants to audition weekends. Need a screamer, a large tuba section, etc., etc. Here's a place to look. The Allentown gathering, Collegiate Marching Band Festival 2014, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28th from noon to 6 pm at J. Birney Crum Stadium. 22 college marching bands will perform at 14 minute intervals. Performance times and ticket information is available at http://www.vivaceproductions.com/cmbf.html The following Sunday, Oct. 5th, also starting at noon, the New England Collegiate Marching Band Festival will be held at Holy Cross College Stadium in Worcester, Mass.; it previously has hosted several DCI competitions. At least a dozen college bands will perform at 20 minute intervals. Tickets are free. Further info is available.at https://www.facebook.com/events/797793110240326 Perhaps other areas of the nation have similar gatherings. Do you know of any? These two ops are good entertainment for corps fans in the off season. Edited September 2, 2014 by xandandl
