Crossmen Director and DM take top honors at DCI

On Saturday, August 9th, the DCI World Championship Finals Competition opened and closed with presentations to the Crossmen. Dan Acheson presented Mark Chambers the Dr. Bernard Baggs DCI Director of the Year Award. The award is presented annually and voted on by all DCI World Class Corps Directors. The recognition came as the corps improved in most captions this season and consistently ranked in the top twelve at each of the major regional competitions. “I am honored and recognize that the entire Crossmen family shares in this recognition. Thank you to all of the Directors as well as the DCI staff for this honor and for all of the support these last two years,” said Chambers after the presentation.

On the same night, Finals competition concluded with a presentation of the Jim Jones Outstanding Drum Major Award to Crossmen Drum Major Megan Huber. “Being out on the field for finals and receiving the award is a moment that I will never forget, and I am so grateful to have had that opportunity. The experience of being drum major this season and learning from not only the members in my own corps but from the leaders in many others as well has been such a reward in itself, and receiving this award is more than I could ever ask for,” said Huber. “My involvement in the drum corps over the past seven years has molded me into the person I am today, and I am very appreciative for all of those involved with the DCI organization who continue to keep the activity alive for the current marching members. Thank you again making my personal involvement in the activity not only possible, but also extraordinary.”

The award is given to a Division I drum major based on leadership skills. Huber went through a series of qualifiers which began with a nomination from Crossmen Corps director, Mark Chambers. This was followed by a resume submission and interview with DCI Hall of Fame member Gene Monterastelli, a former DCI judge and instructor. Monterastelli then gave tapes of each interview to the DCI Hall of Fame committee who also judged the on-field performances of each contestant during the world Championship Quarterfinals
