While attending Nationals this year I noticed that throughout Santa Clara's corp there were individuals that had a greeen feather on their hat along with the white and red ones. Can anyone tell me what this represents?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Green feathers signify Age-outs in the corps and are worn on finals night.

Cheers,

Mark

When I aged out, you didn't get your green feather unless you marched with SCV in a parade that was a month or so after finals in Santa Clara. I think the Parade might have been called The Parade Of Champions and was sponsored by the City of Santa Clara. I flew back to march the parade, see everybody (that could make it) one last time and got my feather.

I find it kind of odd that you marched in the years you did and even with 27th (one of the bigger Corps in those days) and have never heard of this SCV tradition? Is that true?

Ditto here in '85. The hardest thing about that parade was knowing it would be the last time you'd ever get to wear the supersuit; I had a very difficult time taking it off.

EDIT: Maureen, did you get yours prior to Nationals back in the day? I think you've answered this question before in another thread, so I apologize if this is a repeat....

I never marched SCV....but the feather tradition is true.

I have pictures of my roommate in college marching the parade in 85.

Hey Robert,

Good to hear from you. Is that a pic of you at Crater Lake in Oregon in your avatar, or...?

Regards,

Morgan

Eventhough I became quite good friends with Pete Romo and knew his brother Tony as well as Mike Braga, I had never seen this tradition. One year ( I think 1977), I even brought 5 corp members back to my house in Everett, MA as my mother did their laundry and fed them a nice italian dinner. They were so thankful to get to sleep in beds. I remember in 75 or 76 that SCV put us up in their homes  after a show ( I think it was Thousand Oaks).

This past nationals was the first drum corp show I'd been to in 25 years and the first time I got to sit in the stands (on concert side) and watch a finals. I had my suspicions as to the purpose of the green feather when I saw it but I thought I would get it confirmed. When I agedout in Birmingham in 1980, I left my shoes on the field. and received my graduation plaque at the corps' banquet.

Thanks,

John

My ageout year was 1975 and we still performed in the State Open contest in early October. The green feather ceremony was held right before that show and we performed with our green feathers in out hats. The next day was the State Open parade and we wore them there also. The banquet was usually held that evening after the parade.

Wow, I am good friends with the Romos (in fact, just saw Tony yesterday) and have gotten back in touch with Mike Braga since we marched the TOR parade together in 2004. Drum corps is a small world, I guess. Mike is a frequent poster on DCP.
