  1. The VFW changed the 80/20 Rule to 50/50 in 1958... (Not sure when the Legion did?) Some more 1958 Trivia: * Garfield went to AL Nats wearing white t-shirts and shorts - and borrowing instruments from the Cavaliers * De La Salle Oaklands Bugle Band made the transformation to a Drum & Bugle Corps * Hyde Park Crusaders became the Boston Crusaders * Garbarina became the Skyliners * Mel Tierney became the Skokie Vanguard * 3 members of the Royal Airs were killed in a fire at Our Lady of Angels School - RA to this day plays a tribute concert at the cemetary * The State Department sent the Caballeros on a Good Will Tour to Havana * The first Fleetwood record was made - of Lt. Norman Prince Here's a Trivia Question: Where did the Lt. Norman Prince name come from?
  2. Now I'm confused... The Brigs won the AL Title in 2000 and 2001 at the Scranton show (the years Sky [2000] and Grennies [2000 and 2001] were "Judged Exhibition"). But DCAs were in Syracuse in 2000 and 2001... So it appears that the American Legion Nationals/Scranton show and DCAs were not the same show until DCAs went to Scranton in 2002... What about Empire's AL titles in '97-'99? It *seems* like they were won at the Scranton show in mid August each of those years - completely separate from the DCA Finals on Labor Day Weekend... (which were in Allentown those 3 years...) BTW, was 1997 the "Official Re-Opening" of the American Legion Nationals after 1980? I'm just tryin' to get my History correct here...
  3. Thanks! (I'm glad to find out the synapses aren't completely shorted out!) [bump] In 1963, which junior corps had identical twins as Drum Majors?
  4. So these '97-'99 Empire AL title listings are wrong?
  5. Weren't the Bucs the ones who used 2 pistons? (Memory's a little fuzzy...)
  6. Yes, they made for fantastic recordings! Considering the limitations of the instruments in question, Geneva et al were truly remarkable... I have their '59 winter concert in the Playlist, along with their complete '62 Studio Album, their "On The Spot" recording from '63, their 1964 "Evening With The Corps" performance (with the "Out-Of-Breath" announcer.. Heh...) - and, of course, their 1957 (Newark) and 1958 (Al Nats) field performances (one of which caused Mitch Miller to comment.) Great stuff!
  7. Ok... I don't see the Bucs winning the ALs anywhere... Thanks... BTW: 1) Sky was "judged exhibition" at the American Legion Nationals/DCAs in Scranton in 2000, along with Kingston. Was it because of no official AL sponsor like Kingston - or something else? 2) I also show Empire won the ALs in '97-'99 (when it started back up?) These weren't the same shows as DCAs (Brigs won DCAs in '99), so where were these AL Nationals held? Kingston? Tom? Bueller? Anyone?
  8. Hmm... (Must have been '81; Hawthorne won in '80...) I didn't know there were any AL Nats between 1980 and 1997... Thanks, I'll add this to my records...
  9. You got it! (No real surprise there!) Here's a junior (pre-DCI) question: In 1963, which junior corps had identical twins as drum majors?
  10. Actually, yes I was... Reilly and West(Long)shoremen... Here's one: In 1958, Mitch Miller (yes, *that* Mitch Miller) said this senior corps had the best brass section he'd ever heard...
  11. (I didn't say first, I just asked if there was one...) Anyway: Yes on both San Francisco Post (VFW 1932) San Gabriel Dons (AL 1935)! (And just to prove it wasn't a fluke, the Dons won the ALs again in 1937...) Ok, here's an easy one: Post-WWII, name the senior corps to win both AL and VFW National Titles... (There are 2 I know of...)
  12. It was before 1976! It's pretty obscure, so I'll tell you: It was the Kingston Grenadiers in 1973... Here's one: Has a California senior corps ever won a National Title?
  13. (I answered last night, but it didn't show up for some reason...) Bingo! "The Hormel Girls were a unique sales force started in 1946 with teams of young ex-servicewomen who originally sold George A. Hormel Company meat products—door to door and store to store. Hormel’s marketing strategy was to combine sales and music. The Girls formed the first all-woman drum and bugle corps and competed at the 1947 American Legion’s National Drum and Bugle Contest, thus gaining Hormel national recognition." (From: http://www.historytheatre.com/hormel_girls.asp ) Next Question: Name the first North American drum corps to play for British royalty... (It was a senior corps.)
  14. Hmm, I can't find anything on them...? The one I'm thinking of actually competed at a Nationals...
  15. I though this might be fun, and maybe shake loose a few cobwebs during the Winter Doldrums... First Question: Has there ever been an "All-Girl" Senior Corps?
  16. Hey! After the Execs folded, I spent 4 years with the Utica Royaleers before aging out, er, moving up to the Big Time... Heh...
  17. I joined the Execs in the fall of '64 when I was 15. (I might have been the youngest in the corps at the time, but I'm not positive; it's been a while! I know Hank Brunet was about a year older than me...) I was told that I might not be able to march in certain shows due to an "Underage Rule" - the Legion Rule? But I marched every show in '65 and '66, so I guess we didn't compete where The Rule was in effect... Anyway, I'd say the *average* age in the Execs was in the high 20s/low 30s... (How old is Joe Chisek, Sr.? He was there...)
  18. Starting now: Ornaments in Brass Airmen of Note Canadian Brass USAF and a few twisted items (Heh...) It'll run through tomorrow night... Merry Christmas!
  19. Actually, I think he was the co-host with the guy that looked like the Amazing Kreskin... But I can't remember *either* name!
  20. Wasn't he the announcer on the Whitewater video? (NUTS! I can't remember his name! Gotta look at my old vids...)
