  1. I went with the brass caption head to buy supplies when VK was at Nationals. I got the bright idea to buy a *BUNCH* of those little snacky cakes for the corps, and put the contras in charge of handing them out to everyone. You should have seen the look in their eyes! Not sure they made it past the low brass and whatever little bores were standing there at the time. The stuff was gone within 20 minutes!

My current goal is to bake a couple of double batches every evening the week before. I also have a couple friends who are gonna help. I might even use the church kitchen at least one evening cause I can bake a lot more at one time.

  2. Thank you, I agree completely.

    Moving on...

The real weakness of the Colts in the past few years has been their drumline. Until they make drastic changes in that department, I don't see them moving out of the 10th-14th place range that they've been in. At audition camps they turn down the good percussionists and contract the mediocre ones. It makes no sense.

The Colts have been placed between 9th and 16th every year since 1993. They haven't proved (to me, at least) that they have what it takes to move up significantly in the rankings. Maybe they'll prove me wrong this year. Maybe.

The Blue Stars, on the other hand, went from Div III champs in 03, 5th then 3rd in Div II, and then 14th, 14th, and 8th in Div I/World Class. Excepting 07, that's a steady improvement from year to year. They've obviously been doing something right that the Colts have not (yet...?)

We almost lost the Blue Stars. I'm not an insider and don't know how close they came to folding but they struggled for quite awhile in the 80's and early 90's before the big come back. I'm glad they didn't fold or even go inactive.

On the other hand the Colts have been fairly consistant. Sure I'd like to see them do all the right things and move up in the rankings. But being there and educating the members year after year is more important IMO.

  3. Colt's guard has been their strong point by far for a few years now. Last year especially the rest of the corps was well behind them. If they can bring the rest of the corps to that level I think they'll be VERY top 12 compettitive. I've been extremely dissapointed with their drumline the last few years and I think that section has been a drag on their placement, especially last year. A couple of folks have been saying their line is much improved this year so here's hoping for a turnaround.

I think the gaurd overall has been good. It's not really my area of expertise.

I was commenting on the uniform only, not the actual gaurd work. I admit I'm hard to please on the gaurd costume aspect. Even though a costume might fit a theme, IMO, if it doesn't look good against the main uniform or if some members don't look their best in it, it's not a good costume.

  4. Thats the problem...they are just names. How long have the been on staff? Did cesario make the guard uniforms for the past two years? because I wasnt a fan of those

Agreed, especially 07. Those purple capes at the beginning of the show looked hideous against the red uniforms. I understand they were using a fall color, but they could have found a better shade of purple or a better fall color.

Aside from color guard uniforms (I'm hard to please here) I've enjoyed the Colts offerings, especially 08.

I'm very much looking forward to the show this year.

  5. I'd bet the economy (pay cuts, parents without jobs, etc.) is going to hurt lots of corps. If the parents don't have jobs, it's tough for them to help their kid pay for drum corps.

I made a statement like this a few months ago on a thread about the economy and drum corps.

I think we indeed will see more of this kind of thing this spring/summer as parents lose jobs. Many retired grandparents are also in a squeeze as their protfolios and retirement plans are down and perhaps not able to help as much as some times.

  6. i think the issue was having the documentation, however the un-named jerk pulled his rights anyway.

If I remember correctly they did have the rights secured for performing the piece. It was the sycronization rights in regards to the video recording that was the problem. A completly different set of contracts.

I don't know why the industry has made everything so difficult. I understand composers should be compensated and such, but having to obtain seperate permissions for each little item for the same piece of music seems a bit overboard.

  7. I really wish I could actually see some of the older stuff you guys are talking about.

Here's a link to some historical videos Thanks to Tom Vickers and friends. It was originally posted in the historical section. Thery're a bit pricey to be sure but worth the history lesson.

Also remember that most of the original footage was shot by ametures with equipment that doesn't compare to today's, but the 72 finals was worth it to me.

  8. Definite potential here for something I'll like lots, best show idea IMO since 2000 . . .hopeful that it won't be "chop n' bop" arranging.

    Cool. :withstupid:

My thoughts exactly. I like the music if they actually PLAY the tunes and not just hint at them.

The part of the announcement that says "the Blue Devils offer a modern exploration of one single year" doesn't leave me very hopeful.

  9. I'm looking forward to watching Tuba-15, Nick Fazzari on the field this year.

Nick's mom and dad both marched in the Phantom Regiment back in the day, and all 3 (mom, dad and Nick) have marched in the Kilties (dad still does).

We're all rooting for you Nick!

A young man from my community concert band will be in Colts cymbal line this summer. It'll be the first time in a while since I knew a marcher. It does make it more exciting. Good luck to Nick!

By the way has he leaked any repetoire info to you?

  10. I'm trying to find just the right emoticon for this answer. Hm.... maybe this:

    Or... maybe this:

    This might also work:

    Good to hear.

I'm not an expert in guard, however, though small and young I thought they did very good. It seemed like they were being well trained.

  11. Honestly, it was always a joke title for me ever since 2003 when my DCI group talked about how someone always had to play something from WSS in Div I, like it was a law or something. This naturally led to Western Side Story.

I had heard rumors, but I never thought it would actually happen this summer. Now I've got to wait to see how it plays on the field. There is going to be no middle ground. It will be EPIC or EPIC FAIL. A show with that name can't be average.

An important part of it being EPIC will be the guard. I hope they are having much success in recruiting guard members this season.
