  1. Pro baseball players are in top physical condition and their uniforms don't look strange on them. Take a look at the manager though. He doesn't look so hot in his baseball uniform. Ever check out a sunday softball league with guys trying to hold on to their youth while trying not to rip every tendon and fiber in their bodies trying to beat out a grounder to the shortstop? Not to say that you can't keep doing what you love, but at some point, you don't look as cool as you once thought you did.

Before you come off like this, I want you to know that I ran three marathons in 2005 and two in 2006. Not to mention that I lift weights 5 days a week along with training for those marathons. So before you think that all of us dinosaurs are trying to hold on to our youth, find me a person you marched with that has done this. Also I have seen some DCI members that didn't look so good in their uni's as well.

  2. Lisa,

Just my 2 cents, because Renegades has an over 18 rule, maybe that's why it doesn't really "take off" as a recruiting oportunity. Most kids from 18 to 21 are in full DCI tour mode. I know Brigs often take kids that are 15 or 16, at that point too inexperienced for a top DCI corps, work for 2 years and at around age 17 or 18 leaves us for DCI, and stay there until they age out, then come back. If you guys lowered the age limit maybe this would work better, but having kids around sure changes a lot of other rules... you guys ready for that? hehe

    so back on topic...

    :)

I would like to see this in the Renegades, I think it would help our program tremendously. I hope we do change the rules in the near future

  3. G,

Thanks for the review. I really value your opinion and insights because they largely mirror mine with a twist. There isn't a thing in your review that I don't agree with, especially your observations on the Cavaliers. I may be a little biased, but I dug this show more than any other Cavalier show since 2000.

Good luck on the house, you are going to really like fixing it up. You are very fortunate, there are so many people in California that cannot even afford to buy here. When I found out the house across the street in my neighborhood went for $1.1m, I swallowed my tongue and nearly passed out.

  4. Most of the criticism comes from outside the active ranks. The staffs, adjudicators, and members don't seem to have the same opinions that many of the older outside observers do. We all consider ourselves "involved" in the drum corps world if we pay admission fees, but if we're not the ones actually marching, putting a number on a sheet, or paying the bills for these corps, then we're just grumpy old men who sit around the pickle barrel at the country store wishing for the good old days. Of course it's different now, but so is everything else. Might as well criticize the internet for globalization... I thought not. Alternatively, you could instruct, judge, or administrate any of fine Div. I/II/III corps out there today who would love your informed assistance, not your criticism.

Not buying this debate stifling argument. If we didn't buy the tickets. souvies, drum corps could not survive. Without spectators there would be no reason to perform. Without the support of the fan, this thing we call drum corps would dry up and blow away just like the dust bowl days of this country. To underestimate the power of the alumni, and average spectator is foolish, and shortsighted. There was a time DCI did, and it almost cost the entire activity.

  5. Drum Corps IS marching band.

But not all "marching bands" are drum corps.

We are all already in the "marching band world"

And because the two are so melded together, it will be less and less of a motivation for members to pay outrageous tour fees when they can get the same experience in their high school band. My high school band mimick drum corps in just about every way, not the other way around. The more like band it becomes, the more DCA gets my money, marching time and energy. Bands are just not that interesting to me, Drum corps is.

  6. Alright, if people feel that way about it, I'll remove it.

I really wish you didn't. I am kinda of sick of the Cadet Borg being so offended by everything said about the Cadets that you actually have to change what you feel to accomodate them. If they don't like what you have to say, let them kiss your big brass.....

I didn't feel that way about it, can my opinion carry the same weight as the borgs?

  7. My answer to this question is no. Aside from the Cavaliers (and this is just my opinion) there just seems to be a constant in movement and dance that while not getting worse (in the proliferation of its use), is certainly consistant with 2000-2001.

IMO the Cavaliers year after year look like a traditional guard that many dino's like myself can actually get into what they are doing. As for dancing guards, the Blue Devil's colorguard is by far the best at it, and the most consistant person to person. It has been that way for years. As usual the Cadets colorguards was excellent, but they just did not stand out this year for some pretty obvious reasons.

  8. Gellio,

Thank you for your reviews. I read everything your wrote from quarters to finals and appreciated you honest comments.

I want to happily congratulate the Cavaliers and Phantom. A huge 135 person high five to my corps the Cavaliers

The perfomed a show so well that was cut out for them like a Le Glove over the hand. Their show IMO was pure genius.

Phantom, this year you made my heart sing, congrats!!

  9. Hop is not just doing this because the Cadets are in 4th...seriously anyone who thinks that is not able to look at the issues at hand...again with the idea of going out west...most of the shows are in the midwest to the east coast...just like most of the corps...thus more corps would have an expense problem....SCV and BD have taken that into account for a long time...corps like the Cadets, Boston Crusaders, Crossmen, The Magic, Spirit...need I go on...have not and thus this would make it harder financially...electronically speaking...everyone knew he would propose this...IT ISN'T A NEW IDEA...GET OVER IT...if all the other corps feel it's all right...then OK...if not...OK...also raising the membership to 140, really wouldn't make it "better" for the "top corps" that are just trying to "kill the small corps" five members...come on...I could see if it was like 160-175....but five...they can deal...please....and the age issue...i agree...he is just bouncing off ideas...don't attack him just because you don't understand his logic or actually know his reasoning...

Oh for crying out loud, here comes the hoppy ambulance driver B) Do they have a healing kit for sour grapes in your vehicle?

  10. Actually to brutally honest everyone is quite wrong about the singing...

To address the out of tune issues:

she was not...if you have heard the actual song, which I'm sure many of you have not, it is dead on...

    who sings this song?

Lisa Gerrard....who is that you may ask? She is the women who helped Mr. Hans Zimmer with the soundtrack of "Gladiator," which through her jaw-droppingly soaring vocals and wordless lyrics she won a Golden Globe for that movie...

what my point is...the singer, who is an amazing young woman, is singing exactly as the composer of the song wants it to be sung...the language is made up....there are no words...it is a mix of middle-eastern and western sounds clashing to form just rising melodies...honestly...she is doing great....it's just that many people do not understand or know what she is singing...because oh wait...you aren't supposed to...i hope you all complained about gladiator and lisa gerrard....if not...stop complaining about this young woman...do NOT belittle her, JUST because you do NOT understand....

Sorry man, but this young lady is no Lisa Gerrard. And to even make that comparison is insulting to Lisa. I have to agree with what the others have mentioned. When I did clearly hear her vocals (and yes I do understand the lyricless concept) she was flat by just a hair. Unforutunate for her that hair was just enough to ruin a great background horn line that sounded very good. The other two times I heard this show, I could not hear her at all. It really adds nothing to the show, and it really restrains a fantastic horn line from really shining in the show.

  11. b**bs

    Cadets 1991!

Infamous? Hardly. Amazing? That's more like it. One of my favorite Cadets shows of all time. I have no idea why this show doesn't get nearly enough credit as it should. Speaking of pushing the envelope...FIFTEEN tenors? That certainly hadn't ever been done before. That show must have been a blast to march. Short Ride was great...beautiful ballad with an emotional story requiring no voice to tell clearly...and the five minutes of pure fun that is Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs. It's a first place show in my heart.

So, Hrothgar15 has nothing good to say about the Cadets huh? Maybe he just hates THIS year show. Doesn't everyone have that right? I am very dissapointed that he is not able to speak his mind like the rest of you guys. I happen to agree with many of his points, so of you guys don't. Doesn't he have the right to critisize something like many of you guys have done in past years about the Cavaliers guard costumes?

  12. Hrothgar15, you need to settle down and ease up on the CAPS and BOLD font. Yeesh!

I don't think that the Cadets ballad (as it is designed and performed) would have the same effect without the vocals - It adds a haunting, mysterious feel.

Then you arrange the ballad a different way. I would like not to believe that the ballad itself could not be done without the vocals. The haunting quality can be duplicated through the voicing of the horns, you do not need vocals to acheive this effect. The three times I heard the Cadets ballad this year the vocals were out of tune one time, and totally unheard the other two. I actually enjoyed the ballad without it.

  13. First of all, I strongly disagree with you. The horns today sound better and can project just as much sound. Horn lines today are simply more sophisticated and do not play like those in the past. I am thankful for that. If I had to hear 1970s horn sounds today I would get bored and move on. I liked the 70s in the 70s. It was fun...a blast. We are not longer in the 70s. May it RIP.

While I agree with you that horn lines today are more sophisticated and play with more control, there is no way that horn lines are louder today than they were in the 70's. Some of the horn lines in the 70's used to take your breath away, and make you want to commit suicide at the shear volume of their sound. Spirit of Atlanta comes to mind to perfectly illistrate what I mean. I think we all know we are not in the 70's, but I enjoyed the horn lines then as well as now.

Secondly, I really find your machine-gun joe cat shooting the mocked-up picture of the President of the United States to be quite insulting. It's not professional, not needed, and does nothing to solve any problem you may have with the President or this country. Our President is a good man and in a difficult position. You would not be perfect in that job either, so some honesty, compassion, and a willingness to propose your ideas and stand up for your beliefs should perhaps be handled much differently than you have chose to do. Freedom is a responsibility!!!!!!!

One of the greatest things about living in this country is one has a freedom of opinion. You think our President is a good man, I think he is selling the average man and woman out to benefit the rich. The difficult position he is in is self made. He is hasty, largely ignorant of the world around him, arrogant, cocky, a terrible public speaker, and has set the good reputation of this country back at least 50 years. This is a balance to your own comments. It is always good to respect someones opinion even if you do not agree with it.

  14. IMO you are wrong, but that's just MHO. Cadets 05 and 06...Crown 04...Coats 05...Crossmen 06...have proven that micced singing/voice can and has improved the activity where used well.

And I disagree with you! I didn't think vocals really added much to any of the shows you mention. My benchmark on that would be if they removed it, would the show suffer? The answer is NO! The problem with amped anything is balance, and as of yet there has been absolutely no consistancy between corps on this issue. Some get it right, most don't. The voice as used up till now (and this is just my opinion) sounds amatuerish and kiddie like. I have now heard the Cadets 2006 show on three different occasions, and sometimes the woman who sings (or whatever that is) is out of tune(one time) or unheard (the other two times). If you like the BOA approach, then amped vocals gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. Those who do not deem it necessary will be completely turn off by it.

My contention with amped anything is not whether it should be included, but whether technically it can be done well. As a audio engineer who does both live and studio recording I do not think it can the way it is currently implemented. If everyone used the same system, this might just work. But if a dozen different systems are dragged in and set up for each performance, the best you can hope for is total inconsistancy, especially without a thorough mike check before each performance.

  15. good review...why'd you fall asleep in the cadets for two minutes...?!?!?! is that right before the tea party...yes the Guard uniforms do not make them all that noticeable but if you watch 'em they are simply the best guard out there...

To say the Cadets guard is the best out there might be a stretch. Blue Devils and Cavaliers both have guards to recon with.

  16. Hi all,

My friend and I are going to get tickets for the Quarterfinals Cinecast in an SF Bay Area theater. Last year, there was theater in Downtown SF with the show, but it looks like this year the only theaters are in the East Bay.

Hacienda Crossing Stadium 20 (Dublin, CA)

Emery Bay Stadium 10 (Emeryville, CA)

Both are about the same distance from us (Palo Alto/Menlo Park area). Any advice on which one we should expect to be better?

    Thanks

    Troy

I have been to both. If I didn't live so close to Emery Bay I would go to Dublin. Much better theater in Dublin.

  17. And for every person who makes those comments about the guard unis, there is somones else who reads into it more than humanly possible and sees bigotry where there may just be a difference of taste.

That's one of the Laws of America. For every action there is an unequal and blown out of proportion reaction.

Its not really your place to decide how deep someone should read into a comment. Sometimes people just write insensitive things and people react to it. Some people just need to think before they speak or write. That would solve alot of miscommunication issues.
