I hope so. Most of the drummers who plan on coming back say they want to because of Darren and Zack. From what I hear, all 5 tenors want to come back and 5 or 6 snares. I don't know about basses or cyms. But Darren and Zack(snare tech), and Damon(pit tech) made the summer the fun it was.
I heard about Crazy Larry too

SCV 92 = Best freakin horn ripples & snaps I've ever seen

The new Blast was scheduled to have opened a little more than a week ago. I'm just curious whether anyone on dcp has seen the newest version yet. How does it compare to the previous tours?
Anyone?
David
I'll let you know after the show at my college.
-
Chuck did the Crossmen brass arrangements 2000-2003 and the Colts through the 90's. His stuff is tremendous and he's just a first-rate 'drum corps' person.
David
I emphasize the word "NEW." :P
I saw that John wrote drill in 92-93, but it doesn't seem that he'll be writing the drill (from what I gathered).
-
Anybody know anything on these two new guys?
-
Their NEW arranger will be Andrew "Andy" Yozviak. With Chuck Naffier to act as music coordinator.
John Milauskas named as 2006 Program Coordinator.
Yay! Chuck is back! Finally. Now, if only they can bring back Darryl Pemberton to write their drill.
Thoughts?

On top of that... If it "bit the big one" I think the brass staff would have done something about it... they are pretty smart guys! Just in case you don't know who is Crown's brass staff you might want to check it out before you doubt any part of thier musical concept. I am pretty sure there are a few rings there... not to mention a hall of famer!!!
Obviously you just jumped into the discussion on my last post, because I had previously said that they played it fine. The problem I have is WHAT they played and the pacing of it.
And yes, doing visuals while playing is difficult to line up. However, the example you cited is not any more difficult than what (probably) every other corps has done. (Just seemed like you were saying, "OMG, nobody else could ever pull this off!")
-
"Objectively"? what you are presenting is YOUR subjective opinion...which is fine...but don't diss the other poster for having a different opinion. I loved Crown's ballad too...and I've heard LOTS of great ones since I started marching in 1964.
Mike
Maybe a better word should have been "unbiased"? I loved the rest of Crown's show, but the ballad bit the big one.
-
honestly, what are you smoking? it was one of the best ballads of the year! you may not like the song, but it definitely connected with the audience. the momemtum it had was stretched through the pauses, leaving you on edge for what was coming next. it was a fantastic choice, and one that worked well--something i guess you'll agree with because in your last sentence you said it worked.
Sorry, I don't ride the Crown bandwagon. I said it worked, which it obviously did. But, I must have seen Crown 4 or 5 times throughout the summer including finals, and it did NOT carry emotion. Maybe you have a lower standard of ballads or just haven't experienced any good ones. No fault of your own. However, objectively and among the background of this year's ballads, non-finalist corps had better.

crowns ballad last year was amazing it was tough to play too
Sorry to have to do this, but that was the worst ballad of 05. Obviously not because of its performance, but it was just lame. It wasn't a connecting piece with the audience. The pauses/starts and stops killed the little momentum it had. Crown couldn't have picked a worse piece; it only worked because it was entitled with the theme.
And I don't think it was challenging either...
In other news, I think Crossmen should give a serious hard look at Lionel Richie's "Still" ... that songs begs for Ballad of '06

you can't tell me there's not enough dissonant material in there...

how about some kenton?

Yeah, maybe not the best brasslines ever, but I really like the 1997 rendition of Nimrod by Crown.
Anybody happen to catch TOB's Lancaster Catholic 2004 Cathedral show where they played that?
I don't care who you are, that show could have put more than a few good corps to shame with how unbelievably well-performed and designed that show was.
One of the best marching band shows ever. Any circuit...

I disagree about the King marching brass. I honestly prefer that sound to the Yamaha and the Dynasty. The sounds coming from the Phantom and Carolina horn lines tells me that those are quality instruments. yes, both corps have great players, but the sound produced is very professional. The trumpets alone sound far better to me than the Yamaha's.
Jonathan
I only came to the conclusion that Yamaha > King during finals week. Having watched Semi's 3 seats in front of the judges, King horns didn't have the same clarity and seamingly pristine sound that the Yamahas did. Without question, Yamaha horns ring some of the loudest overtones (I can send you my cavies warm-up rec's for proof B) ). All in all, I do like the sound of the King euphs, but that's where it ends. King horns at louder volumes just seemed to have a sort of stuffy distortion.
To each his own.
-
Crown underrated? Anyone who's seen Crown this season knows they are for real.
Now if only king horns would cease being used, they could sound at least 2x better (phantom too).
-
Most corps sell their horns to HS's or whoever to pay for getting new ones. FOR GOD SAKES STOP WITH THE RUMORS OF SWITCHING BRANDS.
Some people are starting to sound like a press that needs a lead story...Almost all D1 corps do this AND ITS NOT A RECENT CONCEPT.
Thank and good night

Thanks for the correction. To me, they are very similar in vein and I enjoyed them both a great deal. I retract that part of what I said and I apologize for the mis-statement. But it doesn't change the point I made. I believe they will try something different programatically for 2006.
Keep the Radar love-ish entertainment, and ####, i wouldn't mind them doing BSN again, heh. Back to reality, bring us another powerful ballad that connects to the audience.
Well, in 2001 spanish/latin styles did the trick ... try that out again?
-
When did I say ANY of that??? I simply stated that I don't think they will stay with the rock/pseudo-pop-jazz genre they employed last year. I didn't even mention 2004 when So Far Away was used. I also never mentioned whether or not I enjoyed either production, but since we're on the topic, I will: I enjoyed their 2004 and 2005 shows very much. I love it when a corps connects to an audience. And I particularly enjoyed So Far Away. The fans obviously enjoyed them too.
But that was not the point I was trying to make: I think that they will try something different with their programming. To be more specific, I don't look for them to explore the classic rock genre anymore.
pssst ... Both Sides Now = 2004; So Far Away = 2005 B)

...Sure starting tour late may have helped them stay alive financially but I think that cost them a spot or two come finals night!...
DING DING DING ... we have a winner!
-
host some mp3's of it and we could agree :]

SCV 89 is definitely popular but it goes on with Phantom Regiment 1989 as well, so theres controversy there.
Like most people if you think 1996, you IMMEDIATELY think OH GOD A DEFIANT HEART!!!!
And I don't think I recall anyone disliking that show.
Really, we got it. You like Phantom '96. Now quit trying to jam it down everybody's throat.
(ps - I like it too, but jesus ... )
