It's been a joke making fun of the people saying it's dying. It's the new Bob Barker
If drum corps dies, it will be because of financial/economic issues and/or turning a blind eye to abuse and sexual misconduct

If you think he isn't narcissistically using his daughter to worm back into the activity, you haven't spent much time in GH's presence.

I have been on this forum since April of 2005 (yikes), and a big argument then -- and ever since -- has been that drum corps is going to kill itself by going the "band/WGI" route: you know, all the stuff people complain and fight about constantly. Amplification, Bb horns, dance, electronics, props, costuming, kevlar drum heads. The argument has always been: DCI is committing suicide by abandoning "real drum corps," and that all the legacy fans and alums will turn their backs, and no one will go to shows.
https://dci.org/news/blue-devils-one-up-past-record-season-in-front-of-near-record-san-antonio-crowd
The San Antonio regional had its second largest attendance ever, nearly reaching the record set in - wait for it - 2017. Not 1999, When they still used G Bugles! Not 2003, the year before amps destroyed the activity. Sure, a lot of alums and legacy fans may have left, but someone - at lot of someones - are paying to go to shows.
So, I think we can say that argument has been thoroughly disproven by history.

And yet...
I read a lot of WWII history. Historians nowadays will point to logistics, industrial output, population, etc. and say, in effect, that the war with won by America the very moment Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Foregone conclusion.
But it took a heck of a lot of people who believed that it was up to them, personally, to contribute to winning that war, sometimes at the cost of their own lives, for the United States to defeat Japan in World War II.
The frontline participants have their place In the story still. Maybe it's just part of the picture, but it's in the picture nonetheless. Seems true in drum corps too. The kids have to do the work and perform. Yes, they're the most talented, but they still have to do it.
And it does matter what they do. You can't tell me that if BD's drumline isn't nails on finals night 2019 that we're not talking about the defending champion Bluecoats. It's something that's planned for in October but has to happen on the second Saturday of August.
Not to hijack but the war was won by the heroic sacrifice of millions of people by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

With due respect, you are not under the same pressure as you are playing your instrument alone and not trying to execute your charts with others. Kind of like if 1 solo snare drummer claimed he was under the same pressure as a 9 Man snare line. No, you aren't.

Synth question: Can you make the synth sound like a 1970 G-bugle line?

Although I am one of the last ones to recommend the closure of any thread, I feel it is best this thread get closed. Facts are ok but this has the potential to get too volatile. We never know where this can go due to someone not being mindful and careful what is said.
Did you say that when the allegations first dropped?

I’d love for the parents of every kid marching DCI to read the Philly Inquirer articles, and then have Dan Acheson personally explain why that man is allowed to attend events.

Why can't DCI ban him from all DCI-sponsored events?

A lot to like about this corps and production, bravo.

It's just marching band. It's kids running around and playing with, more often than not, bad sound. And really "dumbed down" arrangements of music, to fit some designers' idea. Always has been, always will be.

THE CADETS DRILL WRITER Jon Bilby ... If DCI had their version of the "Espys" (ESPN awards) you would get DCI Newcomer Drill Writer of the Year award.
I was just rewatching the San Antonio show and your attention to detail in 1) dropping off and picking up small groups and soloists... 2) Dropping off people to move props...3) (Watch this one carefully Cadets fans) over time how the Cadets get out of the cream jackets...all the way to the intro to the ballad! 4) The mix of old skool run and gun and new school staging? Shut... the ... front ... door! You are good! Thank you for being a part of The Cadets all these years and you have done a masterful job this year!
People... especially judges... you need to watch what I wrote above and take note of this in John's drill for the Cadets. THIS is what drill writers in our activity really don't do well, unless you are one of the Master Drill Writers (Gaines, Murphy, May, Sacktig, Johnny V). John Bilby is a super good drill writer.
The judges need to recognize these ensemble compositional skills and the details needed to not just create effect, but the details... the math and structure... of what John Bilby is doing!
If you are not watching closely, you are missing the subtlety of what makes a great drill writer... great... and how good the product they have designed... is.
Reward it please?Bilby is a great guy

Every few years I have a dream that I go to fill a hole at Cadets, then realize that I’m too old (it’s been that way for a while)

I knew about the wave, fish, and waterfall in 2005, but I don't think I ever noticed the faucet and showerhead. I'll have to go back and rewatch.
The umbrella, hammer, and (funny enough now) crown are formed in the 2006 ballad. Representing “Alice” remembering Liquid, the drum feature, and the chess game (Dancer in the Dark ballad) from the 2005 show. The end of the 2006 opener had a keyhole (like in a door) rotating and turning into an eyeball

2013 BD was awesome and should have won

People seemed to enjoy shows just fine back in the 90s and 2000s without the need for “innovation”

It starts with (dry bulb) temperature, factors in wet bulb temperature (which is related to dewpoint), but then also factors in other things like sun vs shade, wind speed, cloud cover, and sun angles.
The tricky part (if this is going to be used in the future) is that people are already calibrated to the Heat Index/"feels like" temperature, and the WBGT is an entirely different number that people are going to have to recalibrate to. For example, it typically takes a Heat Index of 100 to 105 to trigger an NWS Heat Advisory (and higher than that for an Excessive Heat Warning). For WBGT, stress on the body typically occurs with values in the 80s and 90s (and greater).
Thanks for introducing me to WBGT, I am very into monitoring the weather as I live in Georgia and try to bike as much as possible

I consider this the last "legitimate" drum corps performance; everything since is just band.
