California has a number of Open class corps. DCI has sanctioned all shows there now, but what if....

The Open Class corps joined to create a Golden State Drum Corps circuit. Perhaps shows could allow other pageantry groups opportunities to perform, including mini-corps or soundsport groups. This would be controlled by the corps, not by DCI.

Has the ship sailed on this type of locally-controlled organization, or have national circumstances made it more tenable for a Region-based organization? Just thinking out loud....

EDIT- Also, much of the rest of the country is in school by the middle of August. When do most schools begin classes in California?

The matra has always been "DCI is the corps".

I kinda love the fact that people are sleeping on the Mandarins...........I am not going to say anything, but if these doubters only knew............alot of people going to be wiping egg off their faces in 2024.

Mandarins got their deserved placement in 2023, but it was close. Mandarins need to improve on brass performance and percussion performance for the future, but their GE is rock solid, and their guard is very creative.

They don't need help from any other corps' misfortunes. They're a legit and quality org!

I can't wait to see what else they've got coming!

That didn't take long for the Mandarins to drop behind SCV.

But then again it makes sense, because some of the doubters were firmly convinced that SCV packed up their trucks and moved 90 miles east to Sacramento, and that's the only reason they were good.

...and they're WRONG. Mandarins were Mandarins all on their own!

    Bossa,

Some of your early Star history is off. Jim Mason was not the brass arranger. Larry Kerchner was. Mason was management, with possibly a hand in design. I don't recall Michael Cesario being part of that team, although I could be wrong. DeLucia was indeed part of that team, but he was hardly poached. Bridgemen were done or nearly done by that time.

Not mentioned in your comments, but Prime and Hannum came later. Prime hadn't written for Cadets since 1984. Both Hannum and Zingali (as well as Sylvester) were with Cadets as late as 1988. I don't know if you could call them landing in Star a poaching. I believe they left of their own accord from Cadets. Brubaker wrote for Star early on.

I read that Mason arranged a bunch of '87 Star while Prime and Kerchner weren't around.

Individuals and future people commenting on a topic - You people.  Could say it also fits the topic of they/them since people is better use than guys. Or snark away about a comment bringing awareness to a person that I believe was the first ever they/them in that position in DCI.

Interesting justification for using one offensive word/phrase while trying to defend another potentially offensive word/phrase.

They are my "Cavalier brother" and I love them and I respect them. That pronoun is the most confusing thing on the planet.

I say we pick pronouns that aren't already taken? It would lessen some confusion.

...and believe me, I have to combat antigay and anti-trans comments all the time and to the point that I block people on social media.

Doubtful Saucedo is going anywhere else than Cavaliers. The vibe this year (from the staffers I talked to) was completely different than the chaos last year, and corps management would be goofy not to want to hold on to him. Same with the percussion team: they have every reason to be happy, and happy people don't run away from home. Hope Rosemont can hold on to the guard staff, as they were an obvious upgrade over the last few years in terms of recruiting and teaching (most improved guard this season, and it's not up for debate).

Visual design and brass instruction were the two weakest areas, and you'd have to believe they're looking at upgrades/changes  in both areas.

...and all I've ever stated is that from what we've been told, Saucedo said he was arranging for this year. It was open-ended, and we don't know what the admin talks about behind closed doors.

If you people could atleast use they/them since you had to go to their Facebook page to see the post you know that's the preferred wording.

Also, calling people "you people" has been a pet peeve of mine for decades. Yeah, they changed that, and the poster changed it, and was an innocent thing.

When I was young, all I wanted to read were pretentious little books. Camus and Tournier and Calvino. If it had a plot, I hated it. I'm tired of 'pretentious' just being used as an excuse to dismiss anything that expects you to have a brain.

I'm equally tired of the Uber intellectual crowd who militantly try to make things sound more important and grander than they are.

    Balance...

My brain has earned me a couple of STEM degrees, but I don't try to belittle people who don't have that background.

All these corps put immense thought into their shows.

The difference between them is visual technique and getting judge buy-in, not artistic genius.

    Just my opinion...

I don't think Todd Ryan went to BD until 1994. He was working with Star of Indiana in the early 90s I believe. After Star left the activity after the 1993 season is when BD got Todd. But I do think Scott Chandler was on board BD in 1990.

...and speaking of 1990, Blue Devils can bring back Tommy any day as far as I am concerned.

Thanks, all I know was that he was with Madison, then Star in 89, then later at BD forever....

This is a great point of view. Through the years, I came to understand why BD stays ahead of the game. It's all about your approach and creating from a canvas and not drill sheets. That alone is unconventional in a game where few others choose to do so. Allowing the staff and students to be creative. Treating the staff with respect and allowing them the space to succeed and fail.

Nothing about recent BD shows is boring to me. Art can be expressed, and felt, in many ways. Emotions are complex, and a variety of them (beyond, look it's a whale tail!) can be evoked in many ways. They don't need to blow my face off or throw babies. The show themes and show design BD selects are part personal expression, part commentary, and part criticism, having meaning beyond a performance, a rifle toss, a snare break.

Like the Met Gala, Drum Corps is another recent example of a much broader phenomenon: the accelerating convergence of performance and art, music and fashion. It epitomizes the rewards, as well as the risks, that come with this marriage of aesthetic industries — mainstream visibility and financial gain on the one hand, and the reshaping influence of success on the other.

This cross-pollination has a long history in the arts. Elsa Schiaparelli collaborated with Salvador Dalí on several iconic designs, including the “shoe hat” and “lobster dress” of 1937. Christian Dior ran an art gallery before becoming a fashion designer and later named his dresses “Matisse,” “Braque,” “Dalí” and “Picasso.”

In recent years, DCI has taken a form that transcends a drum and bugle corps organization. It takes the approach of a cultural brand with a global audience attuned to the mythic allure of storytelling. As DCI and its corps see the potential to have a greater influence on the culture writ large, they court a broad public, promote shows that privileges accessibility over criticality, and embrace commercial tie-ins. Drum corps, long the province of a niche crowd, thus becomes less insular and more inclusive.

    A CANVAS?

What a beautiful way of presenting this, but they're ALL on the SAME FOOTBALL FIELD.

One man or woman's canvas is EXACTLY the same as another's drill sheet. Calling a burlap bag a silk dress does not create "haute couture", it just comes off as pretentious.

The one thing that the Blue Devils do better than the other corps is their unique visual technique. Thanks Todd Ryan! It feeds the visual scores. It augments the GE scores. Everything else is comparable to the other corps.

And since this is the Bloo thread, it should be pointed out that Bloo also has their pick of the litter as far auditionees go.

...and THEIR guard is also professional-level quality, as is Crown and Boston's guard.

To this day, those 91 and 93 BD hornlines are two of the best I have ever heard live. Hands down, no debate.

Totally agree, and 91 has some KILLER visual technique. I think THAT year is when BD started their visual dominance in technique and T. Ryan's contribution to that is why.

...and '92 was right there. When a Man Loves a Woman was the talk of the season!

Ironically, superhero movies are one of my least favorite genres. (romance is the all time lowest though) I do really like Danny Elfman's Batman theme song, that would be awesome if a corps did that. Actually that gave me a show idea: vigilante justice. Gives me Boston vibes for sure

Before Mandarins were Sacramento's darling, there was the Freelancers, and they played Danny Elfman's Batman...

Great to hear your take on the shows! Thank you for taking the time to contribute your thoughts!

LMAO! Almost spit out my drink reading that. Too funny!

He has his own off campus apartment near Cal State Fullerton, which is where he goes to college.

He is coming home to our house Saturday for a welcome home from tour dinner. Wife is making all his favorite foods.

Please tell him that we had a LOT of fun rooting for him this season, and please thank him for being a part of such an iconic show!

I look forward to rooting for him as long as he chooses to march. Even if he ends up at BD.... lol

    That would be mind blowing.

It seems like when the Mandarins figure out how to win, they REALLY figure out how to win, so it's only a matter of time before they're knocking the Blue Devils down a peg or two.

Seriously, check out the Mandarins' growth spurts over the years!  They just keep improving year over year!

(Sorry, didn't realize this was a Cadets 2024 thread)
