  1. LOL! This is so funny. Everybody's an expert at all these different marching styles. I can tell you that the "squatting look" is not taught, or wasn't taught 16 years ago in a popular "bicycle" corps. In fact it was discouraged. I remember when learning the drill to our percussion feature, I had to take very large step sizes at one point. I guess I was squatting a bit, because we weren't supposed to jazz run and I had some really large distances to cover. An instructor came over and told me to stop squatting. "We're not SCV. Don't squat when you march."

As far as which style is better... Personally, I think that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Every style has its weaknesses and strengths. Todd Ryan is great. I learned a lot from him in the past. He was great at subdividing where your feet should be at any specific time and just breaking down things. I also learned a lot at the "bicycle" corps that I did march in. The focus was just different at the two places.

It's just interesting to read what people on here write. It's almost like they've picked up this "schpeel" from someone and are regurgitating it back for the world to hear. Until you've marched each style for yourself, you shouldn't shoot the other down.

    No offense. Really!

    Edit for typos

  2. Oooooooo, Stargate, thatd be awesome on the field. And do you mean the movie theme, or did he compose the themes for SG-1 and Atlantis as well? I'm a sci-fi nerd, sorry. I think Lord Of The Rings music would move to the field pretty well too.

I was thinking the movie. I read on IMDB.com that David is credited for the original main themes used on SG1, but other composers are credited with original music too.

    Neal Acree

    David Arnold (original "Stargate" themes)

    Richard Band

    Peter Bernstein

    Joel Goldsmith

    Ken Harrison

    Kevin Kiner

    Dennis McCarthy

    Tim Truman

Thinking about it, a corps could probably do a show around his sci-fi/space movie music and forget about any of the Bond films he written for. I still would like to hear what the soundtrack for Casino Royale will sound like. David Arnold also wrote The Godzilla movie Music, Wing Commander, The Young Americans, and a bunch of other stuff too. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003417/

Oh, and I just remember hearing a HS Marching Band in CA perform Stargate in the late '90s. It was really pretty cool show. I'm not sure if it was Mission Viejo, Etiwanda, Valley View, or what. I thought it was pretty cool though.

  3. The Music of David Arnold: Stargate, Independence Day and a bit of Bond Movie music thrown in for good measure!

I'm not sure who should do it, but Glassmen comes to mind. I guess Carolina Crown would fit too. Actually, there are MANY corps who could make this show fit their image.

  4. Blue Stars did Carmina Burana in the mid 90s as a full show. Great show, they just didnt have the horses to pull it off. It would work well for a big corps.

Blue Stars and Limited Edition played this in 1989 as full shows too. Most of Sky Ryders 1989 played this music too. Each corps version was really cool. Good stuff.

  5. It is.

Drum Corps is a competitive activity, and a little friendly joking around about your competition IS fun.

I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure he was exagerating on purpose.

Okay, I get it. It can be funny if it's done right. I'm sure we did stuff like that "back in the day". In fact, I remember a guard instructer who shall remain nameless periodically poking fun at a few corps doing double flag routines.

The funny thing is, I didn't recognize that the dude was poking fun of a "cavaliers" jazz run.

Come on, bring on some more! Bottom line, it really shows off the diversity of marching style in our activity today. b**bs

  6. From what I here. ALL of those "recordings" belong to Video Express, the company that produced them. I think DCI only had rights to the "broadcast" that was shown on PBS. Thus that's all we get. When the two companies parted ways. It wasn't pretty. They pretty much took their toys and went home.

It looks like 800 Video Express is now doing the same thing to BOA. Greedy company...

  7. Sorry. But there's no alternative for someone who wants to see most of these shows on DVD. The fact that people are purchasing the only option available in an activity that has a ridiculously fanatical following like Drum Corps hardly proves that the DVDs were done "right in the first place".

In my case, I wanted to see 87 Sky Ryders (my rookie year). Purchasing the Legacy DVD was the only way I could do that. It's not available anywhere else in any other form. That doesn't prove anything about the production quality of that DVD.

If these DVDs have in fact been an unmitigated success for DCI, it's because people were practically frothing at the mouth to see some of these shows in any form, no matter what they might think of the production value after DCI already has their money.

And pertaining to the lack of High Cam on the Legacy DVDs:

I too think it's a crying shame that we can't choose that angle. And I would have paid extra for the privilege. Drum Corps shows are designed to be viewed from a fixed point in the stands. So why not make a viewing experience available that is EXACTLY what the designers were going for?

The shots of 87 Sky Ryders focused on the colorguard the entire time. Very little of Marc Sylvester's drill is shown. You can actually here the audience reacting to drill that is not shown. I understand why this happened, because our guard was the focus of the entire show, pretty much. But the drill should have been available on the DVD if a tape of it exists somewhere.

I purchased high cam angle VHS tapes for individual corps finals performances in 88, 89 and 90. So I know those at least did exist at one time. And there's no High Cam option on those years either.

I agree with 99% of this. No offense to Mobrien or anyone for that matter BUT we are a captive audience. The quality of the product is irrevelant. We should just be thankful that something is available. Well, not REALLY, but that's the vibe I got from the previous poster. The poster does offer a good suggestion though, see if there are other places to get the videos you want. I know it won't help with Sky Ryders, but it could help with other corps. That being said, I do think we have a good quality product. I would just like the option of getting a high-cam vid and 13-25th place corps too. I have seen the multicam version a million times through the years.

  8. I sure hope this poll isnt taken as the gospel, and its not "sour grapes" either...but how many of you that chose 2002 Cavaliers were even alive to witness 1982 Blue Devils live ?? How many saw 1994 Blue Devils live for that matter ???

There are eleven!! chances for the Blue Devils to be chosen, they arent even in the top three ??

Yeah, Im relying on the authenticity of this poll........

    ~G~

I was around. Didn't see 1982 live, but did see 1994 live at finals. 94 is my LEAST favorite 1st place show. To me it signifies the beginning of the "new" BD image and arranging style in the music. It was really well executed, but it is definately my least favorite show from them. As far as championship BD shows go, 2003 was much better. 1986 was too.

    :)

  9. This is the year of the ties! Not at first, but there will be several ties! It's happened before, it will happen this year! Every corps on this list will be better than last year's version, except for a few at the top. The top ten corps will score 90 or above. The top twelve's lowest score will be an 87 or above. The 17th spot score will be 83 or above. The 23rd spot will score above 75. I saw it all in my "way-forward" "machine"!

DCI will have much fun having all those bronze medals made!!!

    :)

    23 Pioneer

    22 The Magic

    21 Esperanza

    20 Seattle Cascades

    19 Pacific Crest

    17 Mandarins

    17 Southwind

    16 Blue Stars

    15 Colts

    13 Spirit

    13 Crossmen

    12 Capital Regiment

    11 Blue Knights

    10 Boston Crusaders

    9 Glassmen

    8 Madison Scouts

    7 Carolina Crown

    6 Santa Clara Vanguard

    3 Bluecoats

    3 Cadets

    3 Blue Devils

    2 Phantom Regiment

    1 Cavaliers

  10. There have been so many great drum features in the past, that it's hard to say. SCV had a bunch. I really enjoyed the breaks during Festive Overture years (85,86). Blue Devils have had a slew of great features too. 1986 was a great year for their feature....

A few that come to mind that haven't been mention too much are the following:

    "Seasoned Skool"

Bluecoats 1987, 1988 <- Snare Drum-to-Drum and adding snares as the feature goes on in Autumn Leaves....

Bluecoats 1989 <- Cool feature before the end

Cavies 1987-1990 <- was fun to march the "snake in a blender" drill in 90 during the feature.

    SCV 1987, 1990

VK 1987, 1988 <- Snare Drum-to-Drum and adding snares to the Drum-to-Drum as the feature goes on in "Africa"...

    "Nuevo ESkool"

    Cadets 2000

Cadets 2005 minus the speak thing.

On the new school front, not a lot comes to mind. I know there are short features that a really cool, but the integration of all sections of the corps musically has pretty much brought an end to the extended "percussion" only feature. I miss it as it's actually nice to see one done every once in a while!

  11. Jeffeory,

If you are coming from California . . .

Come on to NightBeat, FirstBeat or CrownBeat and we'll put you to work

then we'll treat you to a few adult beverages (food and a T-Shirt too) after the show.

(Assuming you are of age . . .)

It's more fun working the show anyways,

    than sitting in the stands

    and we need more volunteers.

    So make the trip.

All the rest of this thread:

    Interesting stuff . . .

Just know we all work to make the shows better

and keep the costs down as best we can.

Thanks for supporting all the drum corps & drum corps shows

throughout this great land of America.

Hey, thanks! Sounds like fun! Yes, I'd be coming from California. The house in Louisiana was sold in November… You know, I’ve never worked a show before.

I drove through Charlotte last fall for the first time. It was really a pretty city. No I don’t drive a truck. I just had the opportunity to drive all over the place last year.

Anyway, I know we all try to keep costs down, yet still have corps. Maybe I’m just reacting to inflation in general.

  12. OK..Ill answer point by point.

It does add up. This is an expensive hobby we have here.

the Premium seats at CROWNBEAT are between the 40's. See the seating diagram at: http://crownbeat.carolinacrown.org/tickets.shtml

I doub't anyone drives 13 hours to a local show like CB.

    5 or 6 maybe.

Since you live 2,583 miles away from Benson, NC (48 hours by car) I doubt you'll be there either ^0^

    Well, we'll see! b**bs

Last year I was at the Toledo show, San Diego Show ( when I lived in Louisiana ), San Antonio, Indianapolis, and quite a few more shows in between, including the Baton Rouge show. Sooooo I do get around. I know I travel more for shows than most, but there are some of us that do drive.

Hey, at least the seats are between the 40s. I'm just feeling more broke than usual. Dealing with a couple hurricanes and a 2000 plus mile move will do that to ya. If I end up going to that show in NC, I'll keep the ticket stub to show you that some people actually are that insane! ( I hadn't thought about it, but it's an idea)

    ^0^

  13. I haven't seen anyone complain about singing in corps, if it's the corps as a whole. But the ampped stuff that is done by a soloist is the problem. It's like solo with corps accompiament (sp).

I know, but I've been to shows over the last couple of years where I hear people ( probably newbies) say stuff like "singing was just recently allowed". So there are new fans and perhaps future members thinking that singing is this new thing. I've also heard various directors say that they have this new "color" or "timbre" to play with when they have someone sing into a mic... I'm trying not to be one one side or the other. Basically, I thought it would be a fun topic and it would also educate.

  14. Dude..your not getting gouged. the $31.50 is for PREMIUM seats..in a smaller stadium with limited seating. (simple economics here. high demand, low supply) Notice the Premium seats above are $25.00...not a great difference.

This is also for a GREAT line up. Trust me; the show sponsor is not gouging anyone.

    Listen,

When you go to a lot of shows in a year, it adds up. My worry is that I pay for premium seats, get there with 4 premium tickets that I bought, then find out PREMIUM means between the 30s and I'm on the 30. So I've just driven 16 hours to be on the 30 yard line, which isn't worth it for me... This has happened before. Especially at some DCI regionals.

I don't think Crown is trying to gouge me specifically, and I appreciate that they're fund raising. The problem is that when I spend sooooo much money in a summer to try and support drum corps, I get frustrated when I pay top dollar for a mediocre seat. So, when that happens, I actually do feel a bit gouged. This has been getting worse and worse lately.
