I might be mistaken, but I think Urban Dances was written for the New York City Ballet. As a New Yorker I find the music captures the pulse of the city brilliantly. In addition, as a New Yorker who has spent many hours riding NYC trains and buses, the In.Trance.It idea is heady in it’s attempt to share an experience that is very specific and also universal. Now I might think that because back in college I shot a photo series with almost the same name and a very similar concept. Here is why:
Mass transit riders would board the bus or train and within minutes look like they were in a trance. My favorite photos of the series were taken on different buses on different days of a girl (about 5) and an elderly lady. Despite having no connection to each other, they have the exact same expression - eyes set to a point somewhere in a daydream. Yet somehow, when they arrive at their destination, they snap out of it and are on their way.
It happened to me many times and yet I can’t quite put my finger on the sensation of arriving someplace you knew you were going but were not in complete control of traveling to (much like our travel through life). It's a vague sensation and difficult to describe. My thought is that maybe the show description was written in a not-quite-concrete way to evoke that intangible feeling.
Either way, what I’ve seen on the field from Crown is terrific – not just because they look and sound great – but because when I watch it, I can sense the memory of what I felt in NY - while in transit - being drawn out.
