  1. The "massive volume of posts" are but a tiny fragment of the total fan base of drum corps past and present...and many of those posts come from the same small cadre of people.

I have grown to love it when you give that reply. Almost to the point that when you don't, I wonder if you're off your game that day. BTW there is no way for you to support your statement either. But, by all means, keep on keepin' on, my brother in drum corps!

  2. Does DCI do no vetting of these show organizers / sites? Yes I know through the course of a summer there are a lot of shows, BUT, I recall reading on DCP what a train wreck the Esperanza corps situation was months ago - and knowing that Esperanza was supposedly organizing the show......couldn't or shouldn't this problem have been anticipated? Are there no intermediate milestones set up with show sites that DCI checks up on to make sure show organizers are on track? Or is the total focus of DCI placed on Finals week preparations? This is telling of DCI as much as it was of the show organizers.

  3. Im sure you're not the only one, but its a smaller minority.

To quote MikeD: smaller minority *in your opinion*. I agree the the poster who said - I derive my greatest enjoyment from listening to CDs. A live show is a fleeting moment - I listen to CDs for years after the season is a memory. The voiceovers detract from what otherwise is a joyful musical experience (......in MY opinion). Not sure what opinion is the majority or minority - not sure it matters either. There's plenty of room in the big tent for all our personal preferences.

  4. You can dislike narration all you like. You're very young, and young people (like my almost 15-yr. old daughter) see everything in absolutes & black and white. It's with the wisdom of life experiences that you will come to discover that life is really more gray.

How true. That makes demagoguing things harder doesn't it? If you can't take a stand, what's the fun in that??

Anyway, let's respect each others' views. People who either like or hate narration are not "wrong." People have valid feelings - maybe they express them in a way that inflames others, but that doesn't mean they should be dismissed.

  5. no one booed the victor in 1993 - that's what I'm referring too

& do not mean to "tell you what to think" - I hate that too so if you feel I have - I apologize.

Maybe the booing was because the Finals was in Jackson, Mississippi (which I'm sure is a nice place, indoors, in air conditioning, in August. But in a football stadium......)

No need to apologize - all I'm trying to say is there's lots of diversity of opinion, and, we shouldn't dismiss each others' views (and I'm not talking about you, George, I'm saying in general). Maybe some people can express their views more eloquently than others, so some come across wrong, but, that doesn't diminish the real feelings people have. I know I type things I regret or that didn't convey what I was trying to say. And on the other hand, I know, sometimes it's fun to argue, when you're in the mood, so people take contrary positions, just because..... Anyway, one thing "I believe" is that we all love drum corps. Peace.

  6. 1. no one is telling you how to think

    2. the winner is NOT booed "every year" - which is what I am wondering about / of course there is nver 100% concensus on the victor - but since 1991 I can't remember too many huge boos about who won

Yes, you "borgs" are continually telling me how to think. Every time you say "get over it," or "look beyond it," or "you're close minded," or "drum corps must evolve," or "that's been decided - move on," etc. etc. etc., that's telling me how to think, in my opinion. In my opinion.

I recall lots of booing in pre-1991 Finals; but since you said "since 1991," how about 1993 - I recall all sorts of booing, I'm guessing, by those who thought Phantom should have won. How about 2000 - was the booing all about the tie for first? Or was it displeasure that Cavies rose from 2nd in semis to tie to first in finals (to tie the CADETS)? My point - there has been booing, and, what it's about is in the eye of the beholder. Is it because Cadets win, or because some peoples' favorite corps didn't win? I wouldn't necessarily conclude that booing is an anti-Hopkins anti-amps anti-narration thing.

  7. Cadets: great corps. They've given me hundreds or maybe thousands of hours of joy, listening to records, then tapes, then CDs and now digital since way too long ago. So, I like the Cadets. Here's what I don't like:

I don't like being told how I am to react, how I am to think, how I am to behave. I find that very condescending. I don't call others close-minded. That's a dismissive term used so you don't have to discuss a topic on its merits. I don't appreciate it. So, if I see a show with narration and the narration ruined the experience for me, then it ruined the experience for me. You can't make me like it. You can't tell me to "look beyond it." I'll enjoy it or I won't. Don't dictate to me how I should feel. I wouldn't do that to you, don't do that to me. I won't boo. I never have. I won't make stupid comments. I will clap, maybe without a great deal of enthusiasm. But please - stop with the - I think the Cadets might win but I'm worried because not everyone will think they should have won. This happens EVERY YEAR, with whoever wins. Did 100 percent of DCP posters agree that Cavies should have won last year? Were people worried about the reaction should Cavies win? C'mon. You know what would be nice - respect the opinions of those who do, or those who don't, like narration. Do not call either group closed minded. They're not. We all are passionate about drum corps. If we weren't, we wouldn't be here. OK I'm done. Sorry to be all preachy.

  8. As much as I'm nostalgic and want to see the Blue Stars finish as high as possible, I saw them and Colts head-to-head Thursday, and unless Blue Stars can really step it up in the next two weeks, I just don't see them passing the Colts this year. Which doesn't bump them out of the top 12 anyway, so it's all good.

  9. Wow. I never thought I would see the Blue Stars in the top 12 ever again. I saw them the last time they made finals, in 1979 in Birmingham, and it was so sad to see them go inactive. But they somehow held together and after long years in DIII, here they are, at the doorstep of making Finals again.

In 1999 when Boston came on the field at quarterfinals, and played their warmup, then in that pause between when warmup ended and Brandt Crocker announced them, the crowd rose and gave them a roudy standing ovation. I LOVE finals crowds, because they're so knowledgeable of drum corps history. Anyway, the kids stood there, looking at the crowd cheering before they even started their show - probably wondering what was going on. But it was a tribute to Boston making dci finals for the first time.

So, for those of you who will be lucky enough to be in Pasadena - please, when the Blue Stars enter the Rose Bowl for Quarterfinals, stand up and give them the cheer we've been waiting 28 long years to give.

    God I love drum corps!

  10. Really? You don't like 1000 Airplanes on the Roof? Just like The Canyon by Philip Glass...they are on my "all time" favorite Openers' list. (as long as it's done well). I think Phantom this year left out some good parts of 1000 Airplanes... IMHO.

No. My point was - the poster said: 1000 Airplanes on the Roof - I have never actually heard this but....it should be retired. I was amused by the fact that, a person is so bugged by something they've never heard that - it should be retired. It just seemed illogical to me.

  11. At the very end of the show, when the narrator says "dancers, are you ready?" then "audience, are you ready?" is there a big "NOOOOOO" from the crowd? I was just listening to that show the other day and I thought I heard that? Hadn't heard it before, but then, did you ever notice you catch things with the volume down that you don't with the volume full up? This was one of those.

  12. I just don't hear much mentioning of them...

The Cavies' show is my favorite non-championship-winning show they've put out

Are you kidding??? One of my most memorable drum corps moments was the 1991 preview of champions in Madison. When the announcer (was it Mr. Crocker?) announced the scores and Star beat out Cavies for 1st, the crowd start booing loudly, at which point (and I've never heard this before or since) the announcer blurted out "That's uncalled for" over the public address system. At which point the booing got even Louder. Yup. Never forget that moment. Cavies Advent music - great show.

  13. Drum corps is all about about innovation and creativity. If drum corps was stagnant and only the same recognizable tunes, it wouldn't be drum corps, it would be boring. Drum corps is drum corps BECAUSE it changes.

I think drum corps is all about excellence. Thats what keeps me coming back. If things needed to keep changing to hold our interest, no one would be going to basketball, baseball, or football games anymore. Don't reply with the designated hitter thing - when was that rule implemented? 30 years ago? But, hey, to each his/her own. Peace.
