27th Zombie Lancers
You know you'd watch.

Initial thoughts:
No comment on the quality of performance; large number of rookies + weather = less than optimal conditions.
Not overwhelmed with the arrangements, particularly the percussion. Not a lot of texture there.
The Swan Lake arrangement seemed a little... off. From my totally untrained perspective, the numerous tempo shifts kept the piece from developing any musical momentum. And I'd much prefer the ending from the Songs from the Winter Palace show,

The audio in 1996 was gawdawful. The mixer must have had an ear infection.

So if I understand you correctly, you're predicting that they'll be no 76 trombones in the future ?
Only in the big parade.
-
I'm sure it will be a fine drum corps show - Blue Stars have a history of fun and engaging productions. That said...
"The show will explore what it means to build a home, and how that environment shapes and forms the love of a family."
Yeah, good luck with that one.
Mike
I can't help but wonder how many similar posts were made when Crown announced their show last year...

I'm in the middle of something at school related to this, and thought I'd bring the chat here.
Does anyone know what the acceptable levels of sustained sound are before damage occurs over a series of time? I know it can be different depending on frequency, but obviously in this case I'm talking about instruments (which in themselves have a pretty big range).
I know the DC's spend a lot of time with sectionals indoors. When does it become unsafe? Obviously we can make a lot of Dr. Beat jokes, but what does real research say? When should the DL stop and get plugs for example?
Don't use G bugles.

I have never marched a corps, but my initial reaction it that you should float the idea to the staff first.

I've always been partial to Cadets 85, Make Our Garden Grow.

I thought only the first four minutes of the 1987 show used music from Swan Lake.
Something like that. The bulk of the music came from the Nutcracker.

87 was one of my favorite PR shows. I was Bham for DCI South that year, and when they came out in the solid white unis the entire crown just went, "whooooaaaaaa". Great show from beginning to end.
And who cares of they tell a story, so long as they tell it well? Think of the crowd response if at the end of the show, Spartacus runs across the field and kills the Mouse King. ;)

Can't believe no one's mentioned it already.

9th place to champion.

While we're at it, let's have the guard spin and toss unsheathed sabers and loaded rifles. It's will give them a greater incentive to do it right.

The phrase "About frakking time" comes to mind.and finally, the person whose speech will have the place electric:
Steve "Reliable Rondo" Rondinaro
Congrats, all!
-
I've heard a few horn lines that sounded like they were wearing masks over their faces.
'89 SCV, right?

Read somewhere that Bernstein sent the Cadets a nice letter of congratulations after one of their championships--can't remember which one, though.

I thought that synch rights only arose with the advent of DVDs, and weren't an issue w/ VHS (though other rights did apply). Its only recently that copyright law has been enforced.
The corps is not responsible for sync rights. DCI is. Considering the fact that DCI's priority is the field show, and not CD/DVD sales, I don't know that they would even want to try to stop a group from programming a certain piece.

Many thanks for this.
I'd like to suggest that this be permanently pinned at the top of the Historical Junior Corps board.

The Bridgemen started recruiting dancers for their guard in the late 70s, and were incorporating some dance moves into the show even then. Spirit's magnificent guards of the mid-late 80s also had a lot of dance going on.
-
I still don't understand why so many people fail to grasp the concept that DCI success = cleanest show w/most effective design.
I think they grasp it just fine.
They just think that the ability to engage that audience should be a key component of "effective design".

with a wedge kick?Someone knocks off a Drum Major?
What if someone...
