  1. This makes complete sense. I hope the DCA board and the Renegades organization can come to a more sensible arrangement here.

As for an apology - I think there needs to be a fruitful discussion by the current powers that be within Renegades and the DCA board first about all open issues so they can work it out directly.

  2. I found this thread this morning - interesting stuff.

DCA - if the Renegades had done something truly noteworthy, we all would have heard about it by now. We know how the activity is - it would have happened already.

DCE - So - the Renegades have chosen to - in typical Renegade style - turn adversity into opportunity.

You must understand, for those of us who have been involved with the organization in the Pre-DCA era, chaos is nothing new. If anything, the commentary now is a near copy of what we saw before we flew the corps across the country to compete in DCA in 2002. It had never been done. It was too costly. The corps will surely fold. The corps didn't know it wasn't supposed to make it - it didn't know any better - so it went anyway. From that time, the Renegades have been an 11-time DCA Finalist.

Ok, so flying the corps to Europe seems daunting to many. The corps flies across country every year. It's called normal operating procedure for this corps. There has been an outpouring of support from people such as myself - a person who has not actively been behind the scenes since 2004 - to assist in whatever way we can.

For those of you who like options, please choose A) or B) -

    A) If you think the organization is experienced - The corps is leveraging its 11 years of experience in cross country travel and budgeting to prepare NOW for DCE and make it happen.

    B) If you think the organization is inexperienced - the corps probably doesn't know they're not supposed to make it - don't know any better - and will make it happen anyway.

My parting thought - If there is any corps who can do this sort of thing, it is the San Francisco Renegades, and it will be #### fun to watch.

  3. Contact Charles Hargett at Kanstul ASAP. Wonderful man, and your horns will last 5x longer than any other brand. I know, as Renegades have horns 15+ seasons old (some of them anyway) and they still play beautifully. If you have quesitons, PM me.

  4. The 2009 San Francisco Renegades present:

    Día de los Muertos

Hot Spanish jazz and other great music including:

    One More Time Chuck Corea

Heat of the Day (Pat Metheny)

And more selections to be announced at the December Camp.

    Thanks for posting this, Randy.

I am most likely coming back to march Bari. So is Kimela (I heard second hand). I heard there is a ton of interest for the show. With the new look, I think we're really going to be great.

You need to dust off your baritone and come to camp Dec 7.

  5. Well, I guess I could speak for others, but I will speak for myself. When deciding to march Renegades I took the following in consideration....pretty much in order of importance:

    1. Schedule

    2. Cost

    3. Are the people there having a good time

    4. Can I schelp my old ### all over the field again?

    5. Is my ex husband marching?

    6. What is their music?

I think "show execution" is more important to people than "show design". It doesn't matter if you're playing Jazz, Classical, or techno... if it looks and sounds like ####, people aren't going to want to march there. I've seen corps take some of my favorite music and shove their horns up their arses and fart the show out. Now, it's a show DESIGN that I would have liked, but the execution completely turned me off.

    Hope this answers your question.

Yeah it does, thanks. There is obviously no right or wrong answer and I think these kinds of discussions can prove fruitful to everyone involved.

I truly appreciate your input, LLMM. Hope to see you around soon. :-)

  6. Todd You are really lucky to have such a tight knit group with the Renegades. You guys are really awesome you treated me like a veteran member, Above and beyond my wildest expectations. It was an honor to be allowed to help you guys out this past weekend. You guys really rekindled the drum corps back into me. I came home with a reformed love of the activity.

    Hey Thanks!

Sorry I must've missed this change after I responded and before MoMeesa saw and responded to this.

The Renegades are an awesome group of individuals. PM me sometime and we'll talk Renegades.

Honestly, I would like to keep this conversation general.

I didn't start this thread to discuss any particular goal of any particular corps. Hope you don't mind everyone, but there are already sooo many threads based for all the particular corps that I don't think it right.

    Thanks!

  7. Exactly. Winnah Winnah..chicken dinnah......

I mean, I know, from talking to people who have marched in shows that have STRONG unique characters, Cabs and Kilties to name two, who have told me there are people, usually ex-alums, who say "If we would just lose the kick pants/kilts/spanish shows/Scottish shows we'd win (or win more often)." Eh....could be right, could be wrong....but to them I say, if you want to do <insert different style than THAT corps style> type of show, there are tons of corps around that march that style of show, go join that corps.

Personally, I'd really hate to see Cabs or Kilties or Renegades NOT march the type of shows they have become famous for. I think all three have shown the ability to be diverse and interesting and exciting within their themes.

    Rock on.

Thank you for your input, LLMM.

Belief of size of fan bases for a typical style, I take it that you believe that show design can either grow or limit your recruitment base?

  8. Not sure if show design has a effect on recruiting because generally the people coming into your organization won't know anything about the design of the show until they are months into the season.

Style of the music could make the difference in recruiting.Members will marching and playing the music you select all summer and if they are bored with it going in,,imagine how much they will hate it by the end of summer.

Thats my 99 cents worth. That and 99 cents will get you a dble cheese burger at McDonalds.

Show design, to me, includes style and theme of music. This poll is to discuss the idea that perhaps that the culture of an organization is key, and that show design does not affect a drum corps in any tangible respect.

It may be contended that a corps that does a certain type of show well and is so great at it, a change is never needed, but the show style itself has nothing to go with culture.

It may also be contended that a corps may do a very similar show year in and year out, and how is it decided that perhaps a change is in order? How is that change done? Is there a way to know (like quantifiables, as in scores, or membership numbers) or by the tone of the membership?

  9. Yes it does.. To most people. Even some kids in our high school marching band back in the day actually pulled themselves out of the music program all together because they didn't like the program we were playing. Kids can be moronic..

No you wouldn't go to cabs for Irish music.... LOL Plus I play enough of that as it is... ROFLMAO.. Reilly and Irish American SB...

When I come to a new group.. Look at my Sig... I've been around.. I've gone to a few open houses in my day. If I don't like the attitudes of the people there I just won't go back. The program isn't really that important to me anymore. If the place is a fun, productive, friendly, and challenging environment that's what I'm looking for. The rest is just notes on the page..

Thank you for your input. I agree that in high school, a show that is deemed 'uncool' may turn off kids. Would it be fair to say you are in the category that a good time trumps show design, and perhaps competitiveness?

  10. In terms of "What if corps A decides to establish an identity related to a particular kind of music," I imagine that'd be something where you take the choice to the members and gauge their interest. It'd be the best way to feel out the idea and move forward with minimal personnel losses IMO.

    Interesting.

So you think it'd be worth saying "We are considering doing X show. It takes us in the direction of doing an all (fill in your type of genre) show. What do you think?"

Playing devil's advocate, could that question be taken negatively by the membership? Would the positive potential be worth any potential negative outcry as to "why even consider this"?
