  1. This is so easy why poll...

The hardest instrument to play MUST be the Contra. There are always a plethera of other people (esp. sops) but a corps can never find enough talented Contra players. I truly believe if the talent and availability were there, Div I corps would consistantly march 12 contras (or possibly more) instead of 10 (or sometimes 9, like SCV last year, and several other corps).

  2. Thank you so much.  I'll try to pack a six of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

That six-pack will be gone before we land in Scranton - lol.

Maybe we should ship a few extra cases ahead of the corps to make sure we're stocked up for the weekend.  :P

    Carry on...

    ]:-)

Shh Steve...that's why I have eleven shipment containers for 10 contras.... 8^)

  3. What I liked the most about it is what I think that drum corps is really all about -- meeting old and new friends and playing some good music together.  I talked with people that I have not seen in 10-12 years.  It was just great.  That alone is worth doing senior corps.  Though, play loud <& in tune;)> is a close second.

One cool thing was to see so many SCV people at LMS this year.

The Renegades and SCV are really starting to mix well.

Of course, having many people marching SCV Alumni AND Renegades at the same time certainly does not hurt corps relations...  :)

    LR

It's really a cool relationship IMHO. Everyone gains from the relationship!

  4. Not that I want to make Louie's head any bigger than it is, but I've got to tell you that I've heard him crank and he certainly reminded me of a few old baritone players I know.

So, from one geezer to the next, you might not want to forget your Geritol for this competición de huevos.   ;)^

Well Homer, it says you marched Spirit 80...were the baris that year the loudest ever? I hear '79 couldv'e been louder for Spirit's bari line...

  5. I challenge any baritone/euphonium player in the country to play louder than I can - and that is not a boast - ask Gillman, Nalls, Dastrup, DeMello, or Rick South.

Double C, huh? I've been playing double F's since my freshman year in high school.

You may be the loudest baritone in your little geriatrics club, but I have a DCI I & E Championship medal, and the ability to cut through any 64-piece hornline that says...............

    BRING IT!!!  ]:-)

And what key are you in?

  6. OK...

I think we should add a "volume" competition to I&E at Scranton. A decibel meter is easily obtainable. Have a tuner there too, and use some kind of point system so that the loudest, most in tune person wins...?

If anything, alot of people would come to watch!

    Comments please!

  7. I challenge any baritone/euphonium player in the country to play louder than I can - and that is not a boast - ask Gillman, Nalls, Dastrup, DeMello, or Rick South.

    Bring it on.

In fact four of the five people you named can make an experienced evaluation of that challenge...

    Time and place, bay-bee!

I'll take a piece of that, too. I'd like to see how close I am (or far away).

Remember y'all, I've got time on my side.

    ]:-)  ]:-)  ]:-)  ]:-)  ]:-)  ]:-)  ]:-)

  8. Is Rick marching in 2002 SCV Alumni?  Is he marching Renegades?

He is teaching SCV Alumni. He only performs standstills with the Renegades. But he may make a surprise appearance to teach the Bari line one of these days (if I can pry him out of his house).

Yes please....please....I don't know why he wouldn't want to take a couple hours some time to do it... Personally, I'd love the opportunity.

  9. Would you trade all six silver King French Horns for ONE 3v Kanstul Contrabass?

You bet we would. Unless of course, the Contra was marked "Property of the Santa Clara Vanguard"   %-)

  10. Remember when we almost broke that mirror in Madison???  We shouldn't have held back!!!

    That mirror didn't stand a chance - LOL   :D

I can remember when "peal paint baby" "part my hair" "shake the popcorn out of the fat ladys hand in the upper deck" - really meant something - It is one of the exciting things that is missing from junior drum corps today IMO.  I love the young kids today - but if they could only see the '72 Kingsmen '75 Scouts '76 BD or similar corps from that era - the intensity and the hype....  Video just does not do "old drum corps" justice - you had to see it LIVE.

Isn't that why we have senior corps?

  11. volume =

Cadets 97.  In their closer, about 9:25 into it, the baritones come out of nowhere with these sweet quarter notes.  If you haven't ever heard the show before and don't expect it, it can scare the crap out of you!

I can't agree with you there. The baritones were good, but I can't say they peaked on the volume scale. I saw that show live about a half dozen times and I can't even remember the quarter notes...what I do remember is 30 seconds of "WIIRRRRRR" at the beginning.

  12. Hey, I'm biased.

I thought the company front from Trial and Crucifixion was the LOUDEST thing ever on a football field.

But, I've got to give props to the 1997 Crossmen for that ending.  Wow!!

    Andy Smith

    Railmen 93-94

    Madison Scouts 96,98-99

No offense...but the ending was the best part of Xmen's show. I, for one, loved when it was over!

    (yeah, sarcasm)

  13. As a member of '97 Cavies, we had some sweet parts that brought the fans to their feet. Now in the Renegades, I wonder what baritone line stands as one of the most powerful/loudest of all time. (yes, bari/euph mixes count as well)

Please reply, as I gotta know!

  14. As I was looking at 16 Mellophones on the field yesterday, I started wondering - has anyone marched 16 middlehorns before? Has anyone marched more than 16?

BTW - 16 Mellos are extremely loud - even when they have their horns DOWN!!!

The mellos are kind of sort of loud, I guess.

I am working on a Frankenbaritone that will have four bells.

We'll see who wins the LOUDest section award this year...

    >:-]

  15. One more thing...

SCV going to all Euphs had alot to do with the key of Bb. The Band version Baritone just was too close to a thing, trombone sound (from what I heard). The Euphoniums they have compare very much to the sound of my Kanstul Baritone Grande (at least that's what I thought when I played one).

  16. In drum corps I was always looked at the euphonium section as the bridge between the baritones and the contrabasses. A good euphonium section makes the lead baritones, (and the other baritones,) happy so we have a nice 'pad' to play on. There is nothing like a full lush euphonium sound, especially when you get to play on top of it. (I loved listening to Vanguard's 22 euphoniums last summer).

I totally agree.  One of the best moves made in a bass line was SCV moving to all euphs.

    (not that I would carry one ... I'm too old!  (:-D )

And I definately agree that having an excellent euph section provides a solid base, not only for the bari line, but for the entire corps sound.

I wanted to buy a Euph for Renegades, but I wasn't allowed (something about being the only one, or something ;-D ), but I believe a corps is much better off with a line of Euphs (say 8 or so), especially if they have  powerful upper brass.

    OK Renegades...who's with me?!?!

  17. With SCV, it was a couple scales and warm-up stuff they had. I wasn't very good then, but I was in town, so they put me on Euph. I had only been playing about 6 months then, but I made the cut.

Cavaliers, I played part of the opener, I was horrible, but they had 3 holes on tour and took me anyways.

Renegades, I just showed up. It's funny because now I'm to the point of where I shouldv'e been in Junior corps, I think (but louder, oh so much louder).

  18. In recent history, I have to go with the 1993 Cadets. Their show, "In The Springtime When Kings Go Off to War" were really fabulous (and the guard work was, too). The Knight-garb, with chain mail, was really cool.

    Any others?
