  1. hardly, while VK was choosing more of the Barry style of music as a vehicle for their flair, cavies were exploring the music of David Arnold, not necessarily bond.... btw, Barry's music for the bond films was outstanding and highly underrated!
  2. THE ALL TIME UNDISPUTED BEST OPENER WAS "GEORGIA", Spirit of Atlanta...no one else even came close...if there was only a 3 minute show rule, they would have won finals 3 years in a row.
  3. Seems like we have some sort of deficiency here. What is the learning curve of DCP?
  4. Im pretty sure the late Ray Baumgardner wrote Blues in the Night for spirit, Brothers of the Bop, etc. he was also the brass arranger for Madison at the time....notice the similarities between Blues and God bless the child? Future Corps also played this arrangement for their Epcot show...
  5. yeh, i remember the pony drums...also used during the pertroushka drum solo...Mike never really wrote an accellerando, but it was metered to have an "accellerando" feel...in the end, it was probably more of the desired effect, rather than the written note (have some music)...this is very similar to the 83, 84 solos...they were all metered....yeh, the 5/4 measure doesnt make sense...its negated by a 3/4 at the end (?) Mike's great...went on a ski weekend in W.NC mountain with him and his wife (actually a large group)...he almost broke his leg...but cool to talk with him about spirit, Moorehead State and the tom float days. He is now head band director at Walton High School, Atlanta
  6. whether or not he tunes from the top or not, or anyone for that matter, dont make it so....tuning from the top has always provided me exactly what i want....for me this is the prefered standard.
  7. sure if you like...im just pulling them out of the hat...u can also quote me as to saying the current administration will leave office with a lot of scandal, controversy and indicments....winter 2006 will be mild, summer will be very unusually hot and sticky and John Barry will retire from film music.
  8. why not? being that the season is 9 months away from starting...no one can tell. would like to see some new blood instead of the same old.
  9. how many name changes now for cadets? 3? (since they are no longer from bergen county, but from allentown, pa now) Garfield Cadets (1953-1988) Cadets of Bergen County (89-2004) The Cadets (2004-) anyway back to Spirit of Atlanta/SJSU/whatever...if they have the delta and play Georgia as their signature...they are Spirit of Atlanta (cool name anyway) something old: Let it be me...Georgia is too cliché at this point (besides they have retro'd this to death) something new: ??? dont know right off hand something borrowed: simple song at sunrise (be a great down time peace) or Midnight in Miami (for their fallen brothers Suncoast)...going out on a limb, but would be cool. something blue: oh come on...the pun is limitless (Blues in the Night, the baumgarder arrangement from 83 or 84? that totally rocked)
  10. hey Mike Back fielded 9 basses (holds dci record for most basses on the field)!!!! was that drumline huge or what? 9 snares, 4 tenors, 9 basses, 4 cymbals....wow, they were pretty clean if i remember...the solo was cool with the stick toss and the back sticking accelerando...put crowds on their feet everytime, even if the show didnt. overall 89 was a great year for drum corps, just wish spirit wouldnt have taken Interstellar Suite and would have brought back some of their signature tunes...would have loved to hear Blues in the Night again...
  11. actually allen murray wrote spider...campese, perhaps knowing his fraility at taken credit for many things that he never did, must have lied. spider was back from 84...when murray was beginning to take suncoast in new directions.
  12. This question is best answered by the Bridgemen and Velvet Knights, who staged many a comedy on the field. FYI, to do this and sell it well, timing is important (as in all comedy), music/visual execution is absolutely key. sloppy presentation only leaves it hollow....look at 88, 89 and 92 VK, for example, they marched and played well, all the while making the audience think they were simply partying...it takes a lot of work to give the appearance of partying.
  13. as i have already stated, and have set you straight, as a staff member on the sidelines, we have many "anchors" that we utilize (during rehearsals, warm-ups, etc)....we are not in the audience, it is our show, sit back and enjoy. Point is, some of these makes the recordings...again see earlier post EXPLAINING this. furthermore, dont think that you can start writing rules that say, this is ok, but the same thing later, isnt. jeesh! just read. to inform most of you, many of us (staff and design teams) see this as a competitive sport that utilizes music, assorted audio and visual. Yes, the performance is generally considered musical, but it is not a concert by any means. When Im playing timpani in the Philharmonic and someone yells out "Go timp...woooo", i consider that brash and rude...in drum corps (as with soccer and other sports) its a part of the game. In the symphonic arena...it is rude to show favour (applause until the piece is finished...that means even abstaining after each movement as well)...with jazz/big band, the sky is the limit..."woops, hollars and applause" is always appreciate by the band during tutti "lay back and wail" and after solos. Drum corps is a little like the later, but more like the environment that its performed in - A SPORT ARENA! If you cant come to a show and relax and have fun without being annoyed by mass crowds, then buy the DVD or tickets for the 10 yard line.
  14. he should of ran back to suncoast when they pulled out those back potato uniforms
  15. interesting...another spirit alumni....ill ask Freddy
