  1. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps joins our drum corps brethren in extending sincerest sympathies to Bill Toomey's family at his recent passing. Bill was with the Skyliners in 2001, both as a staff person and as an Assistant Drum Major. He always demonstrated passion for drum corps and for the people he worked with and taught. Bill was patient with newer members who needed a little extra help, and was always there for people on the field - and off the field. In addition, he brought quick wit and humor to any situation! It was a pleasure to have had the opportunity for Bill to be a part of the Skyliners. He will be missed throughout the drum corps community.
  2. The Skyliners had their first full corps rehearsal yesterday. We had about a 75% return of members from the Open House. If we count those that we knew were missing, we have about an 85% percent return. We had a full day of marching, movement, sectionals and ensemble. As always, we close the rehearsal day singing our corps song. Here's a video montage of the day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW9litFgOUg&feature=youtu.be The forecast calls for Blue Skies!!! If you LOVE TO PERFORM AND ENTERTAIN and want to be part of a high velocity, intensity-packed brass and percussion-driven marching program, the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is the place for you! The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps’ next rehearsal will take place: Date/Time: Saturday, January 4, 2014 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 P.M. Location: Wyoming Valley West High School 150 Wadham Street, Plymouth, PA 18651 Directions: http://www.mapquest.com/places/wyoming-valley-west-hs-plymouth-pa-2216650/ Keep up-to-date with us via our website, http://www.Sky2014.org or the new Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/skylinersdbc. 6. Here's to another great Skyliner day and rehearsal! Spend the day with us and see what the buzz is about! Be a part of the rebirth of this legendary drum corps.
  7. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 24, 2013. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps’ Open House yesterday was an enormous success, and an exciting beginning for this legendary drum corps in our journey to hit the field in 2014. More than 100 performers (almost 110!) actively participated – playing brass, battery, cymbals and pit percussion with more than 20 color guard performers practicing. In addition to the Skyliners staff, we also welcomed about 25 parents and a number of Skyliner Alumni who came out to perform or show support. Rob Stein, Brass Designer, and Scott Carey led the brass instruction, supported by Mark Murphy, Ryan Lamoreux, and Ed O’Connor. After warm-ups, the horn line worked through the first 1-1/2 minutes of the show – “Feeling Good” - which included hints of melody from “Blue Skies.” This arrangement gives the listener everything you want to hear from this horn line - featured brass players, lush chords, and well-placed dynamics that build into the rush that one would expect from this song. The enthusiasm and talent level of the battery, under the direction of Percussion Caption Head Eric Boylan, and Brendan Carter, will be a driving force for 2014. The battery ensembled the Opener with the horn line in the auditorium under the direction of Drum Majors Adam Burdett and Steph Carbonell. Ashley Eden, Front Ensemble Technician, worked with the 14 - 15 pit percussionists on keyboards and technique. To give everyone a taste of the talent level and potential of this group, the Front Ensemble performed for the other members and attendees at the end of the day. The Skyliners are thrilled to welcome cymbal players to the corps as well. The color guard members in attendance, led by Michele Fadden, Color Guard Instructor, stretched, danced, and learned a flag routine to go with the corps’ opener, “Feeling Good”. At the end of the day, the color guard performed their routine for the rest of the attendees. Their movement and work definitely helped convey the sentiment and mood of this song. View our Open House video at: http://youtu.be/HMspTSw-oBg All in all, it was a great Skyliner Open House and first step towards taking the field in 2014. We thank everyone who attended today, everyone who helped set up and clean up for the Open House, or helped in so many ways to make it such a success. To those who were not able to attend due to school/family commitments, please mark the Skyliners’ next rehearsal on your schedule: Date/Time: November 30, 2013 ~ 10:00 – 6:00 P.M. Location: Wyoming Valley West High School 150 Wadham Street, Plymouth, PA 18651 Directions: http://www.mapquest.com/places/wyoming-valley-west-hs-plymouth-pa-2216650/ Keep up-to-date with us via our website, http://www.Sky2014.org, or the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/skylinersdbc. 15. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 13, 2013. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is returning to the field of competition with a show entitled, “A New Dawn, a New Day.” Renowned for performing an exciting, entertaining, and crowd pleasing show, this year’s song selections will not disappoint our fans or members. The Skyliners have selected songs that contributed significantly to the history of jazz: “Feeling Good”, “Blue Skies”, “It Ain’t Necessarily So”, “Round Midnight”, and “Caravan”. “Feeling Good” is probably best known for Nina Simone’s 1965 rendition. Simone was widely associated with jazz, and she earned the title, ‘High Priestess of Soul’. This Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse song was written for the 1964 musical ‘The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd’ and has also been covered by great performers such as Michael Bublé. The Skyliners have chosen Bublé’s swing version of this song to open their 2014 show. Expect to hear strong percussion, featured brass players, the rush that one would expect from this song. Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies” was written in 1926 as part of the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy. “Blue Skies” was such an enormous success that history says that the opening night audience demanded 24 encores of this tune! It also it became one of the first songs to be featured in a talkie, when Al Jolson performed it in ‘The Jazz Singer’. Performers who recorded this Berlin song include a Who’s Who of the most famous singers in America. The Skyliners’ rendition will bring a contemporary feel to this jazz classic. “It Ain’t Necessarily So” was written by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and comes from their opera, “Porgy and Bess.” Notable performances of this song by the character Sportin' Life, include Cab Calloway on stage and Sammy Davis, Jr. in the 1959 film. While this is familiar ground – the Skyliners played Porgy and Bess before – the 2014 rendition will be bluesy and full of emotion and passion. “Round Midnight” is a 1944 jazz standard by pianist Thelonious Monk. Monk wrote this song when he was 18 years old, but did not record it until many years later. In 1946, Dizzy Gillespie added his famous introduction and cadenza for his big band arrangement, which proved so popular that Monk added it (albeit an altered version) to his own performance, making it a standard part of the song. One critic called “Round Midnight” a “darkly beautiful” ballad with an “after-hours” feel that manages to sound fresh and original decade after decade. JazzStandards.com noted that “Round Midnight" is the most-recorded jazz standard composed by a jazz musician. “Caravan” is a well known jazz standard made popular by Duke Ellington in 1936, and composed by Juan Tizo, a trombonist with Ellington’s band. Due to its ability to conjure up mental pictures of distant and exotic places, “Caravan” became one of the Ellington’s orchestra’s first efforts to incorporate influences from other cultures into its music. Dramatic percussion effects, a winding and meandering melody, and Latin American rhythms make “Caravan” memorable on many different levels. We invite you to be a part of something exciting that is new and old, and help bring this celebrated drum corps back into the field of competition. No stock charts, more affordable dues than other corps, and an after school/work and weekend experience you will not forget!
