At the VFW & AL Nationals I marched in, inspections were held prior to entering the stadium to compete and possibly on a different day (prelims?). One was held in a nearby parking lot. At local "contests", there was usually three lines. Inspection, ready, and starting line.True symmetrical drill really started about 1974 when back-field entry was allowed. The style on the video starting on the side 1 goal line (aka known as the 'starting line') was used because during big contests like VFW would sometimes have 70+ corps competing - this was the most efficent way to keep the show moving along. You underwent inspection on side 1 at the back of the end zone while the corps before yours was on the field, then moved up to the starting line, performed and ended in the side 2 end zone. Once on the field, most drill was symmetrical.

Another possibility for ML's departure is he convinced the decision makers that Animal Farm was a show to move up. When that didn't happen and the corps moved backwards, his fate was set. Whatever the reasons are it's obvious that the 2014 season is over, lessons were learned, and it's time to focus on the future.Maybe I have no idea about building a champion. Maybe the pressure is too intense and the expectations are that it has to be done quickly.

Wishing Boston Crusaders a very Happy and successful 75th Anniversary. Some alums are too self-involved and (think they) know better than the admin....This admin. is talented, young, BAC - experienced, fearless, and financed.
Whether from Boston, FL, CA, WA, CT, ME, VT, NY, VA, NJ , PA, SC. NC, FL, GA, LA, TX, OK, OH, IL,MI, Japan, Nepal, Italy, Holland, Germany, or The UK, this organization and their Alums surely must appreciate the Global- Waldo statement made by so many talented members who marched w/. this fine Corps.
I hope you continue to shake things up, laugh at the micro-managers/ whiners, know-it alls, and hyper critics---some of whom have the tenacity and poor-form to post here!
It's all about you, Crusaders and have a special 75th Year ahead, y'all.x
PS I'm putting y'all in my will..as soon as I'm out of the lady-house.Warden's a peach.
Yes, Phil, some of us alum do get carried away and I need to be more patient with their goal of moving upward. They have shaken things up these past two years and the resignation of M. Lentz is the latest installment.

After one season this is his reason? The BOD hammer came down quickly. It smells like politics to me. "Just resign so we don't have to fire you." His late Summer/early Fall commitments have probably been the same for years. He was able to include Boston's design last Fall. May the story behind the story see the light of day. (No Kool Aid drinkers spin please.)from fb:
" so I may focus the necessary time and attention on my winter design work and continue to develop a marching band design/drill/staging company[/size]"
that's a pretty huge loss for boston...
Now that I vented and based on the knowledge of many of DCP posters, it does appear initially to be a tough loss for Boston. May the BOD and corps mgmt. announce M.L. replacement soon which may have been in the works for some time.

Cover the BW with thin material. You know what would prevent a lot of strains and other injuries encountered during the season?
Bubble Wrap.

Hell, this took place in our family in the mid 80's. Twin sons were not allowed to play American football by Mrs. RN Ghost for this reason, but they sure took their bruises playing baseball, ice hockey, and soccer. If the trend lines continue and the Medical Community keeps producing data that links football concussions to long term brain damage and emotional concerns, we can expect that future Mothers of America to keep their kids out of the sport of football. And when it comes to these decisions, it is primarily the Mothers ( not the Dads) that make the decisions on participation. And if Moms become increasingly scared with the medical data, thats becomes a bigtime problem.. especially when football participation insurance rates can be expected to go right thru the roof for future football participants of all ages when the data keeps coming in showing the long term cognitive impairments that come about with participation in the routine physical collision that the sport of football has in each game with its participants.

Some of them have a faraway permanent residence now that has no zipcodes too,... if you get my drift.
Yes, he was a tenor drummer and still alive.

Incident, not accident!Well, at the end of the day it's only going to take one lawsuit (if there is a severe enough accident) and we'll be short one corps and have new rules.

Maybe Tim K. can drop a line to the BOD.But I know BosCru lost a major potential financial sponsor when I showed said zillionaire this corps' schedule for 2013-14 and almost got him to come to a home show contest.
He emailed back his regrets, circled the Good Friday camp weekend with the comment: this corps' values are confused. He donated his money elsewhere, outside of drum corps.

Since 2000, they have only placed as high as 6th once and fell from finals twice. Now I have enjoyed many of their shows in these years, but I wonder of the corps has ever really recovered from the Key of G to B-flat switch.
During this time period, have they not had brass writers/instructors who have taught higher placing brass lines? (I really don't know.)
-
So corps have never gone after talented mm from other corps? A mm gets the word they have a spot for the two corps they auditioned for. They then choose who they wish to march with.Travel teams they are recruited for, and choose. Oh, wait, that ruins Brasso's argument.

Sure would earn some points in IE.So how well do people think something like this would go over in one of our beloved corps' shows?
I know, not electronic, but I think it would be at least interesting what some members could come up with.
-
With 70 points for GE and Visual, and only 30 for music, the sheets would probably have to be changed again to give back more importance to music.I'm certainly no expert but I'm not sure why people think it's difficult to design a show that works both musically and visually. So if you have to write a show that DCI rewards with scores, and you would like to be more competitive, then clearly that's what you need to do.

Plus very good ATD during rehearsals. The rest will take care of itself if you can execute the heck out of it. And that comes about thru good retention, and strong recruitment, imo
-
Any corps celebrating a major anniversary can still be competitive if a good design is executed well. With all the changes in DCI recently and those that may be on hold for the time being, and with no assurance that DCI will be around in the year 2040, never mind those who marched 60 years ago, next year might be the best time for the Crusaders to honor the corps history. This may be old news, but for many, no corps has survived the tough times like the Most Precious Blood Hyde Park Boston Boston Crusaders. For many years, it was the alumni, instructors, friends, and members, who kept the corps solvent. Members who also taught the corps. Alumni and parents who put their homes at risk without telling their families. If any corps could get the fans extremely excited, have their souvie sales possibly go through the roof, it might be the BAC doing a tribute show.I just hope they spend the majority of the show looking forward, not backwards. As pleasing as the latter might be (to fans, that is) I would be concerned how it would affect their scores. Coming off 10th in 2014, they certainly don't want to risk falling out of Finals in their anniversary year.

You're forgiven.Sorry

Scoring trends are one thing, but isn't the talent of the members part of the puzzle? Can a finals placement be dumped on the instructional staff of any musical section?Right. E.Hampton took over from O.Carmenetes in 2010? 2011? Has the percussion program improved ? Doesn't appear to be according to scoring. His act is wearing thin.

Let's see now. SCV finished 2nd seven times. Check. 1998? Nope, they had a 97.9. 88? Naw, a 96.9...........Ohhhhh, here it is. 75!"And in second place, with a score of 91.0...the San..." I never did hear the rest. The ovation was thunderous.
-
+1To this day, the longest, most sustained, audience applause that I've ever heard at DCI Finals, was the long and sustained audience applause the 27th Lancers Reunion Corps got from the DCI Finals audience in 1994.... and they were not even competing.

I believe Ellis taught them in 13 where they finished 8th. This year 10th. If they keep the core of the percussion section, you are right, they should improve. The percussion is heading in the right direction. Ellis had a great book for the kids this past summer, and i he is still on board, look for them to continue to improve.

Hope Bob and Johnathan Kraft will lower their parking fees this time and turn off the elevator bells. (I believe that was one of the complaints from nine years ago.)

Did you have to wake up BRASSO? Come on rook!Threads like this are funny. You can probably guess a person's age pretty acurately based on their range of shows listed.

Received this from a friend who aged out (finally!) in 64 and we were mm of the 64 Boston Crusaders. Page 98 begins how we did up against the big guns from the Mid West.
