It’s not the equipment.  It’s the operator.  You had some master operators in that horn line.

It still amazes me that we had piano, saxophone and bassoon players in that line. I have taught and still teach the best horn lines in DCI and, these days, kids have to practically be masters on their brass instrument to have a chance to make the line.

  2. My list in order...

SCVanguard - Always a crowd pleaser, its a shame they don't score better. LIGHT 'em up!

Bluecoats - Show designs have been brilliant, fun to watch. Bloo will be the next new champion.

Cadets - Always loved them. Hated all the narration last year but "10" was great... I still call 'em Garfield.

Crown - Fun show to watch

Phantom - Loved the Claire De Lune

    Honorable mention Blue Knights

Rarely making my list is Blue Devils, indisputably excellent, but not interested in seeing their shows more than once. What was "re-write of spring" all about?

From wikipedia..."the first part of the work would be called "The Kiss of the Earth", and would consist of games and ritual dances interrupted by a procession of sages, culminating in a frenzied dance as the people embraced the spring. Part Two, "The Sacrifice", would have a darker aspect; secret night games of maidens, leading to the choice of one for sacrifice and her eventual dance to the death before the sages".

The "re-write of spring" music was taken directly from Darryl Brenzel's jazz arrangements of the Rite of Spring. -- http://www.amazon.com/The-Rewrite-Spring-Darryl-Brenzel/dp/B008DXI2R4

    Enjoy.

  3. Blood on the Fields by Wynton Marsalis, the Pulitzer Prize winning 'suite' about Africans being brought to the US as slaves. There is some amazing music in the three hour, three CD 27 part suite, it's a story that could be beautifully realized by the Blue Devils, and one that would be thought provoking, powerful, and enjoyable (it does have a happy ending).

And to top it off, there is narration for the modern DCI folks to both embrace and complain about (depending on your sensibilities) :P

I've wanted to see Blue Devils do this for almost a decade, and I think it would work so well for them.

The 2004 show used some music from Blood on the Fields even though it wasn't credited on this page:

  4. Yes indeed, plans had already been made long before finals. Sorry to anyone who prefers to think otherwise, it simply isn't true! I remember a conversation that I had with a member of the CB (before we even had a show) who sort of let the cat out of the bag. He told me how nice playing with all of us (Nick and I had just recorded with them) next summer was going to be. He almost literally stuck his foot in his mouth right after he said it...lol. I didn't really fully understand the significance of the conversation at the time, but when the plans were announced everything made perfect sense.

Yep, I remember hanging out with members of CB after a couple of shows, specifically the Massilon show. Chuck Daellenbach hung out with us (contras) until we were ready to roll that night.

I just thought it was a really cool gesture by some famous fans...then it all made sense at the banquet....

  5. I thought our show was pretty darn clean visually, especially the feet. The part that was disappointing though was about the last 1.5 minutes. Especially that scalene triangle/company front sequence in the last 30 seconds. Also, I thought our timing in some of the expressive movement could've been better. I'm not good at judging color guard so I can't speak for them. I do agree that the fact that it is still talked about so much (good or bad) has sweetened the grapes quite a bit.

We must have been pretty clean (atleast that weekend) because we won visual in semis. We went from first in field visual in semis to 4th or 5th on finals night. I don't think our performance from night to night was all that different so I guess it's apples and oranges.

I thought cadets worst part visually was the timing of their feet and their tendency to bounce (watch the plumes).

I'll second Ben...we didn't lose a show all season in field visual - finals night we were 4th! Todd Ryan is still peeved. ;-)

    Sour grapes, indeed.

  6. nothing against BDs contra lines or anything, but I've noticed they usually dont march much hard stuff.... they always seem to be separated into their own little clique that does its own thing... as compared to what other corps do with theirs.

You might want to pay a little better attention to the drill BD's contras are having to march. I marched in the '93 Star contra line, but I don't think I would have been able to hang with these guys.

As for my favs, excuse my prejudice, any of the contra lines in a Donnie Van Doren brassline (Cadets, Star...soon Crown and Blue Stars) seem to have a presence unlike any other.

Contras like tubas should be felt, not heard.
