  1. Are you saying you don't like any of the corps? That is what I don't get. They are all so different. Even if I don't like what one puts on the field, there are many others that I do. I still don't get how one corps can ruin the whole night. Funny you think the 80's BD was so great. The '88 corps was booed for winning at least two shows in the Mid-West. Back then the entire corps was on the field for retreat.
  2. It is a little sad that 11 minutes of a two or three hour show can ruin the entire night for you...that you can get no enjoyment out of all of the other corps because you don't like what one corps is doing.
  3. For at least the third time in this thread: What difference does it make if the judges hear it? They score to a defined criteria. Why do you think they should ignore this criteria, their training and their years (decades for some) of experience and give the highest score to the corps that gets the most applause?
  4. Are you saying you can't design a "good show" that hits all the boxes on the sheets? Cadets 2011? Phantom 2008? BD all of the years in between (my opinion, maybe not yours)?
  5. Give me a break. It's not like he yelled this out at the idiots booing in the stands. It's not like he gave the finger to the other corps on the field. In response to some morons booing when he was announced as the World Champion, he used a curse word (actually just an abbreviation of one) essentially saying "screw you" to the classless, and he did so on his own personal Facebook page which can likely be viewed only by his friends (and apparently his parents). Don't worry, I am sure your kids will never curse in public or private. I am sure they will simply post on their Facebook page that they are happy that the fans felt comfortable enough to boo when they won and they appreciate the feedback to their performance and victory.
  6. Really? So who is at the Santa Clara show tonight? Maybe I can see a celebrity?
  7. This has nothing to do with the judges "tastes". They are following pre-determined criteria. Some may interpret some of the criteria a little differently, but the differences are usually very minor. Again, if you don't like the way the corps are being scored, complain to DCI about the criteria.
  8. I am just wondering why it is okay for a fan to act immature loudly and in public, but a member (at that point FMM) cannot do the same on his personal Facebook page amongst his friends.
  9. But if Jack in the Box Corporate changes their soda contract from Pepsi to Coke, do I stand and yell at the girl at the register? Or do I call or e-mail the guy with the big clown head? "Complaining" (booing) during retreat is aiming your complaint at the wrong people.
  10. I must not be up on the latest etiquette rules. So, booing loudly at retreat is perfectly acceptable. An age out posting "FYWW" on his personal Facebook page the day after he heard boos from the stands when he was announced as the World Champion is not. It shows a bad attitude. Why should the judges care what you "like". They have criteria to follow. They have to justify their scores to all of the corps and to the judges administrators. They can't just say, "Well, the crowd certainly liked them." If you don't like the criteria, complain to DCI.
  11. Well, then, that makes "booing the judges" that much more pointless, doesn't it? Maybe they should call DCI HQ and boo them? Operator: "Hello, Drum Corps International. How may I help you?" Caller: "BOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"
  12. Not a problem. BD has a small (and quiet) Honda generator on rollers. They used it at the BBQ performance at Stanford.
  13. Perhaps Newseditor needs to get HIS meds checked. :)
  14. I care, and I didn't boo...hmm... So, what aren't they happy about. Were they booing the percussion judge because he didn't have Crown in first? Maybe the brass judge...oh wait, he did have them in first. There were seven judges there all looking for different things. When the numbers added up, Crown was 2nd. I guess we could just throw it all out and use an applause-o-meter. We could save a bundle on hiring judges.
  15. Of course they use the sheets. Of course they had some say in their development (but they are still only one of several corps with this influence). Some people here seem to think they just look at the sheets and throw some random music and movement together to match whatever they say. The BD staff designs an overall show. They obviously keep in mind what they will be evaluated on, and it does influence some of the choices they make. However, listening to some of them explain the show and the design choices made (they have a preview event each year for donors), it is clear that they put so much more into this than just "hitting all the boxes".
  16. I don't think the BD staff sits around and thinks, "What kind of show can we do that hits all the points on the sheets?" Most of the latest concepts have been in their heads for years. And they SHOULD have the sheets in mind when designing their show. It would be a complete disservice to their members not to. The kids are there to perform AND compete.
  17. Of course you are right. I was mostly being a smartass because of all the "booing the judges" comments. Who is to say they are doing it wrong. DCI could do a better job of explaining all of this for the people who actually care. I expect most on DCP would be interested in a better understanding of how the scoring works. Then, they could focus their complaints to the right people. The casual fans in the stands may never understand it, but I don't know how many of those really care who wins as long as they enjoy themselves.
  18. Wait, so we should be upset with the judges because they didn't ignore all of their training and years of experience (decades for some) and give the top score to the corps that got the most applause?
  19. In addition, Jack Meehan was the brass instructor at SCV when Wayne Downey played soprano for them.
  20. The "classy" people near me booed after Crowns placement was announced and a little louder when BD was announced in first. The message was pretty clear. Personally, I clapped for every corps as it was announced. They all earned it. I probably clapped a little louder when Crown was announced, hoping to drown out the morons. If you want to express your disappointment that your corps didn't win, send an e-mail to DCI to change the judging system again. Or, send an e-mail to your favorites corps' director and tell them to get better. If you don't like the product that won, contact their corps director and tell them what you think. Anonymous booing in the stands is tacky and pointless.
  21. Float, dude, this is the first time you heard of this? BD Entertainment (current and former BD members) were involved in this project. Someone previously posted some video from pre-release events at the Pixar HQ where they performed. It is VERY cool to see this kind of exposure for BD. In our day, our only exposure outside of DCI circles was the opening of the new Marine World in Vallejo.
  22. That should be "Congratulations to the UNDEFEATED Carolina Crown". Hey, they should enjoy it while they can. :)
  23. I am still confused about why you keep comparing adults making hundreds of thousands of dollars (some millions of dollars) to youth and young adults 21 and under PAYING thousands of dollars to entertain you.
  24. From the photos I have seen, they look more like the poles used in 2008, but with individual stands so they can be left standing straight up when desired. There are also rumors that this is not the final "design" for this equipment.
