  1. A few things... heads should not roll. Let's just say that they had heard the buzz... where else would you have put finals? The Coliseum? Pffft.

The point about Sound Forge, etc. I know the audio guys are working on that. I can also tell you that the buzz is going to be extremely hard to remove given its frequency distribution. This isn't just a 60 Hz hum... it's all over.

Frankly, I'm glad that someone offered a different perspective about all of this. I'm personally satisfied with the answer to the original question.

No heads should not roll at DCI for ruining finals week?? They trashed DCI on some of the most exciting Drum Corps we had in years. Not only was there the buzzing the field is patched all different colors of green and it looks horrible on EnCorps. The DVDs and CDs are worthless and ESPN2 is going to look and sound like crap. The Cadets antics on Thursday had BD cutoff in theaters out east; instead let’s give them all a raise because that is going to happen anyway.

On Thursday trying to get into the tunnel for section 19 some DCI VIPs were being abusive to the young lady checking tickets, no one else could pass so I missed the Glassmen. They looked like a bunch of vagrants, smelled like bums and when I got into the stadium we had to kick them out of our seats then they talk through the show a few seats away. This happens every year. No, no heads should roll.

  2. The quality of the narration needs to be judged both for dictation and technical merit. Thursday was horrible the highs were turned up so much I got a headache, Friday was a little better. The “I Believe” content was not original and kind of childish at times, there are more horns than just trumpets and patting themselves on the back really turned me off. The drill was slower paced than the other corps, the guard was average at best and a 2an place finish was a gift. The drum line was not up to the normal Cadet standard and the horn line got to lay back most of the show. What a waste of talent. The Cadets forgot the basics this year and the fear of George is the only reason they even scored that high. Also for those of you who don’t go to Div 2, Dutch Boy also had a good use of narration with their Space Show. Dutch Boy, Bluecoats and Crown did show us a little narration is OK. For the Cadets they forgot their target market of training musicians for musical careers or are they training newscasters? In any event their placement was a real gift but on Saturday I believed I needed a beer anyway, I mean how many times in 1 week do you need to hear the same stuff before it gets old.

  3. I thought it was "let's try something without voice".

I think that was the best crowd reaction the got during their show at finals.

It made sense to take it out on Friday since Thursday it was the loudest appluse they got, I made note of this on Friday and really thought it was done for the KIDS but putting it back in on Saturday was not it the best interest of the KIDS that George like to use as his excuse for anything he does. On Thursday the Cadets did not march back to their buses till after BD so I had the chance to appluse the KIDS as they marched by but I totally understand the booing.

As far as the DVD's and CD's are concerned the buzzing lights already ruined them. You can really hear the buzz on EnCorps so unless they play around with an audio program like Sony Sound Forge to get it out they will be flawed forever. Wonder if ESPN2 is going to be flawed. What a shame DCI had a chance to really shine in the artsy LA area and the buzzing ruined all that. In the program book there is a picture of the DCI staff checking out the Rose Bowl so how did they miss that, heads should roll at DCI for that blunder.

  4. A lot of The Cadets 2007 show is debatable. A lot of it is covered in other threads. That said, there are some observations I feel are more universally accepted. These are:
    • The amount and usage of The Cadets' narration in their show was not universally received.
    • There is still a large portion of fans that don't care for narration.
    • The Cadets' staff was well aware of fan discontent.

So with these things, on Thursday, one performer said something like, "Now, let's try something without voice." This received a cheer similar to the cheer a pitcher gets for throwing a strike after walking in two runs. It was almost like a "wouldn't that be nice"/sarcastic cheer.

Friday, The Cadets took it out.

Saturday, The Cadets put it back in.

Knowing that they would receive exactly the same kind of sardonic response, they taunted the audience with a "wouldn't it be nice if we'd shut up," and putting that as a big middle finger to the "haters" right on the CD and DVD for time in memoriam.

Does anyone know why, other than the apparent kiss-my-### rationale? I can't for the life of me understand why they would do something that antagonized people in that way. It's one thing to go out and do something different. It's entirely a different attitude to do something your way and thumb your nose at what many people like. Even if this is the future of the activity, talking to this extent, and I doubt that, why the thumb in the eye to the fans that pay money to watch drum corps?

In the end, I found the taunt to be unnecessary, and insulting to all fans, not just the ones that disliked their use of voice. Again, whether you liked it, hated it, are indifferent to it, the question is why? Was there more to it?

    (edit for readability)

  5. What is drum corp about, to DCI it is not about the kids, look at where they are holding Div 2 & 3 next year, 200 miles from Indy. The young adults who join the Cadets know what they are getting into. The I believe theme was written by Edward R Morrow back in the fifties and brought back on NPR in 2005, but there was no mention of this all year so is it OK for the Cadets to steal someones work is that what DCI is about. The judging is horriable on Friday the Cadets were dropping equipment all over the field and took first in Color Guard and BD who was perfect came in sixth that judge needs drug testing but since it's the Cadets the judges chack with George first anyway.

  6. Ok so I was at Allentown (both nights) and I saw the most disgusting shirts. These horrible shirts say "This I believe Shut up and Play". I think that this shirt shows a lack of respect for the activity. But seriously I think the shirt is the opposite of what Drum Corps is about... so I really think people should boycott that shirt.... By which I mean please DO NOT wear them!!!!!!!!!! Thanks
