  1. 8 snares with good stick posture. Too big a line for the early 1860's. Must have been right around 1865, just after the rudimental bass and mellophones were introduced. These guys had a tight budget no doubt. Ya gotta give the drum major credit. He looks like he's got an attitude and it works. :)
  2. Yankee Rebels auditions, circa 1958. I have no idea who they are or when this was taken, but I'd pay money to see the guy on the left spin that rifle. If he hasn't been dead for 150 years that is.
  3. Thanks Andy. The thing with Garfield, was bus related after the show. No parking lot physical contact. They were all on their bus and one of our guys got real heated because something was said between the bus windows about beating us. Never really led to anything after during the season. That's just the way things happened back then. Some corps just didn't get along. I remember 63 Newark Schools Stadium Penn Jersey, we had an issue with St. Lucy's, but come winter, Bunce was teaching them and we'd go to their practice and all was fine. It's all part of growing up in drum corps I guess.
  4. Andy, there was an indoor show in Connecticut, winter before the 64 season I believe. I know Garfield was there because we had parking lot trouble with them. I don't recall much though, like who else was there. Might you or Elphie recall this one? I can't even remember what town.
  5. Amazing how St. Lucy's climbed the ladder after the 62 season.
  6. Sadly, Loretto and The Queensmen? Think it was a contest in Union City, NJ. That field with the cement or brick wall around it? Not sure if Loretto was there that same night though. The LI senior corps most know. Was Sun the only LI senior corps? Were the Pequa Redmen a senior corps? As far as reaching a level where the big guns were, Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx had a large talent pool. The NY Kingsmen had people leaving already. The many JR. corps from the LI Circuit had talented people wanting to move up. I know we already had at least 5 Selden guys after a horrible 65 season and demise. Imagine, Queensmen and Selden in the same room? Scary! Slowly, folks showed up. 67 was OK, but we seemed destined to be a 4th or 5th place corps. I remember the 67 Barnum. Hot as hell. Afternoon, John had us doing company fronts down a slope next to a school somewhere. Simple company fronts. I look down the line and thought, man we suck. Come on guys, we got Hurcs, Sky, Reading and Rebs tonight! The evening played out as I thought. If only everyone worked and thought we could do it. After the 67 season, many things changed. People started believing we could do it. Things looked up and people started showing up. Talented guys. Some had to wait for a spot. Think we had more DMs than 1st. Sops. Even Walter Bunce, Bobs brother. People that wanted to work with a goal in mind. All on the same page. I wasn't there to see how the late 70's corps came to rise, but something tells me many of the above tools came into play. Maybe different people, but all on the same page. Imagine that.
  7. Ya gotta give that Garfield guy credit. He looks like he should be the picture in the dictionary next to Drum Major. While the Selden guy (Artie Greig) looks like he should be the pic next to :"Oh Yeah?, Just Try It!". :)
  8. Have at it: Someone please verify that's Audubon at #5. And if not, who dat?
  9. The caption under the pic on the site says Mosque Theater, Newark, 1962. So I guess all these folks are from NJ, PA, NY. When I first saw this picture, I tried to figure them out but couldn't. Outside the obvious of course. I must admit that to the right of the guy I'm very sure of, I'm lost. Unless of course that's a Caballero (Exhibition Corps), but he looks too short to be Ralph.
  10. Been wanting to post this since this thread began. Held off because I don't have all the answers, but this could bring back memories for some. If you can name all the corps, left to right, yer good. Very good. I know the year, location, but not all the DM's/Corps. Well, I do know at least one. :) If nothing else, it should lead to some conversation here. Have at it:
  11. I just did a search and it didn't find anything for Pepe Notaro at all. Even used you as author. But, I did narrow to this thread only. That's odd, I mean he's mentioned plenty here. Seems to be a lot of fields to fill in when you search but I didn't use all of them. Perhaps one of the admins could step up to the plate on this. Tried again with a tweak and only came up with this: http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/topic/62406-favorite-drum-corps-personality/page-8
  12. The current feature, The Bracken Cavaliers go back many years like so many of the American Legion post corps. Founded in 1922 and were sponsored by the Robert W. Bracken post 382 in Bristol, PA. In the 60's, they hosted the Eastern States Circuit Championship. If this works, here they are from 1963. Picture goes back to earlier days and a different uniform: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1a48B6GtxA
  13. I know who, but not the location or date. I'd say it's early 60's. Jim, read my previous post.
  14. The current feature is a corps from the burbs of Philly, a town famous for a certain dance style back in 1961 and a song about it. That backdrop seems familiar, as I believe I've seen several top corps in pics from that same field. Also, flags on those buildings most likely mean a convention or holiday celebration???
  15. Here's a pic from a FB site. Simple right click on the pic, copy image, paste here. No [ ] link [ ]. Go figure, sometimes it just works.
  16. I knew why they were singing HB, what I didn't know was why I thought back to that time in the armory.
  17. He sure was. I first met him when I was 15 or 16. Me and Jack Schwab went to their rehearsal in an armory up near Harlem. I recall us sitting and talking, waiting for everyone to show up. I looked up at the clock and it's 11pm. I was like when do they start???? In Selden, we'd be wrapping things up about then. Jack talked and talked and Wink sat there listening and smiling. I remember he had this great big smile all the time. Around midnight we left and they still hadn't started rehearsal. Several years later, I believe it was at 68 Mission Drums, we were walking into this hall at BC after retreat and Sky was singing Happy Birthday to the Sunrisers. I have no idea why, but suddenly I thought of that night in that armory. Maybe because he still had that smile on his face. He certainly was a living legend.
  18. Holy Moly! His uniform was stolen? There's a story in itself. Where's Carol Merk.... when you need her? Just kidding. Wow, never heard that one. Man, that's like stealing Carlo Gambinos pinky ring.
  19. Here's a pic of a Bob Dylan concert, Symphony Hall, Newark, October 1965. That Sky pic may be 66??? Where the heck is Ray P. when you ne.................Uh Oh! I'm in trouble now. :) https://www.google.com/search?q=BOB+DYLAN+CONCERT+AT+SYMPHONY+HALL+NEWARK+PICS&biw=1455&bih=739&tbm=isch&imgil=1rUqDcRxtbmMcM%253A%253BaV6f0agqmajGDM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fblog.peterstonebrown.com%25252Freviving-a-memory%25252F&source=iu&pf=m&fir=1rUqDcRxtbmMcM%253A%252CaV6f0agqmajGDM%252C_&usg=__XOovAspfl9scZoC8chgM65oLjTc%3D&ved=0CDcQyjc&ei=e9YmVfugDIXBggSMz4B4#imgrc=1rUqDcRxtbmMcM%253A%3BaV6f0agqmajGDM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.peterstonebrown.com%252FBlog%252Fwp-content%252Fuploads%252F2014%252F02%252FSymphony-Hall-2c.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fblog.peterstonebrown.com%252Freviving-a-memory%252F%3B720%3B498
  20. There's also a few horns down, to the left of Winks right hand. Might one be Pepe below that flag on the left? Pretty sure by that back-drop that's Symphony Hall, Newark. When did they move EWTC to Jersey?
  21. I guess most here know the current feature is The Springfield Marksmen, from the Northeastern Circuit. I think that photo is from 1965. OK, on to the next feature: Here's one just for fun and maybe produce a few stories.
  22. OK, my apologies to Fish. The PM on how to post pictures I just sent you John was edited by DCP. Might be code restrictions. Sorry I could not be of more help. Glenn
  23. Ray, nice to see you back. Are you sure about the Butch connection? I thought that connection was a corps with Men that spanned two States?
