  1. Nope. While Derby's field was on the side of a vast wooded hill (amd the old woodedn stands seemed to go up into the woods, with locals sitting in the woods), the other person is thinking of the Winsted, CT show in 1996. Hurcs, Sun, and I think that was it. No lights, and we had to hurry because it was getting dark out. No stands. I liled where the Torrington Vagabonds parade corps had their show. Nice 1920's baseball stadium with wooded seating, but the judges box wasn't on the 50. You had to play the hits crooked.
  2. Forget all the sports talk........WHEN IS TUBA CHRISTMAS?! WHO'S WITH ME?! Rockefeller Center, freezing chops, and 200 tubas. What more do you need, except for some utility pizza or street food. The 2009 is over. Have a good time relaxing 'til the 2010 season. I know I will. ______________________ Carl Akins Contra/Ct Hurricanes 1985-1987, 1989-2006, 2008, 2009. 3. And don't forget the Super Bowl Party at the 'Bop! Or is it RJ's?

  5. Um, who are you? Also, there are no paid performers in DCA, with the exception being an instructor here and there who may want to perform with the unit they're teaching, either as a plug or because they want to sweat with the section (and that's not technically getting paid to perform). To suggest otherwise on a message board is inflamatory.
  6. I agree with James. Thanks for the honest, objective appraisal. I got to make some frindships and aquaintances through the years from other corps, and they work as hard as anyone else in this activity. In the course of a season everyone everywhere thinks their corps should be over another unit. The home-team passion can color your objectivity (I'm not immune to it, so I guess everyone has it). The scores were the scores. Congrats to all of the units! Oh, for the record, I absolutely loved being a part of the 2009 Hurricanes. I remember my 1st year-1985. We had 20 or so horns and would have given our right arm and various other body parts to be in 4th not just 1 year, but 2 successive seasons. It was a bit deflating to go from 2nd in prelims to 4th in finals. Hey, it would be for any corps members. But these things happen IMHO. I hope my fellow Hurcs keep that in mind for the 2010 season. Take care, and hope to see some old friends (and new faces) at the 2010 Hurricanes Open House. Until then I have WEEKENDS OFF! Laundry and sleep hehe.
  7. As a marching member of the Hurcs (and this being my opinion), how could we be mad at the corps who provided all of the competing unts the BEST showers of the season thus far? Temperature control AND water pressure combined are a good thing! Oh.....the chesseburger aromatherapy was nice, too. Made me wish there were at least 2 alumni corps there so I could get one or three instead of lining up for retreat as soon as we exited the competition field. Good practice site, nice showers, nice crowd, and cheeseburger aromatherapy. Thanks, guys ;)
  8. Actually, it was a very wise move for them to come out and compete IMHO. While they may have not gotten a score or placement they wanted, they were seen by an East Coast drum corps audience and an East Coast DCA panel judged them. It sets them up for a better placement in Rochester if they go before the same judge, or are seen by a judge who may have been a spectator. Good Luck to all of the competitors. And for the over 40 members (like myself), don't forget the Advil.
  9. Yes indeed. Was there a general admission ticket?? Ont of the things I miss about Barnum is having spectators cheering you on from the back-side of the field. That's always fun.
