I think corps need to start getting more abstract with their show designs. When every show is super literal or story driven it just gets cliche. I think that’s where the Bluecoats have excelled recently, especially with shows like Downside Up and Kinetic Noise. Those shows don’t have characters or stories, but they aren’t completely random either. They have meaning without having to rely on that meaning, which can’t really be said about most of the top 12 the past few years.

    Well said!

Bluecoats played the Beatles, and last year did a jazz show.  Boston gave us Rocky and Tears for Fears.  Bridge over Troubled Water was featured by two WC corps.  Phantom Regiment featured classical music.  Admittedly, we do not have full and balanced variety in music selections... but it is not as bad as you suggest.

I am more bothered by aspects where variety has been extinguished.  Like how every show must have either props or tarps littering the field.  Every solo must be into a mic.  Every corps must do less organized drill in favor of more scatter, standstill, body contortion, and prop climbing.

I do agree. These things have become almost compulsory.

I'll say it even though there will be an attack on me BUT......

How about corps executive directors say "Enough of your freaking ego's and write an exciting, fan-friendly show, where we entertain the PAYING customer and NOT worry about making the judges happy!" Vince Bruni did it best as director of the Empire Statesmen, play music that the fans know and can relate too! As a music educator I am in awe of the talent out there today. I know the old school people hate what is happening and there are some like me who appreciate the advances in corps today. That being said, there was only ONE show that made me happy so thank you Bluecoats! How about 2020 ALL corps make the paying customer happy!!! If the fans don't come then what?

Okay so now attack....see my name is there for all to see and not hiding behind a fake name!

Agreed! Absolutely loved the 2019 Bluecoats. Kudos to their amazing show designers!

Is anyone getting bored with show themes among the top corps these days?

Most everyone is doing the avante garde, post modern, esoteric, hidden meaning thing.

I'm constantly thinking "what is it?"  Random circles and sticks, run ways, doors opening, strange props, futuristic costumes... I feel like I'm in the modern art museum at the Smithsonian every drum corps season.

Does anyone miss a little bit of realism and grit in shows?   Maybe every once in a while a major score show ... like the old days...Phantom, Fiddler, etc.

Or a show that doesn't leave people wondering "what is it?"

Bluecoats were one of the few corps this season where I wasn't scratching my head trying to figure out what the show is supposed to be about. Theater does not transfer to the field very well.

disappointing? Maybe on your POV. I doubt the kids feel disappointed unless placement is a huge focus of their day. Plus the competition around them gets better and deeper every day.

The kids did the best they could to date, and have 3 more runs to do it better. After all, Do Better is half the show ( feels like it anyway)

Really...and where did I say anything that made you come to these conclusions? Reading comprehension!

    Indeed!

Cadets' performance from Allentown (as seen on Flo) was outstanding.  Discounting the many staff-created design failures, the improvement of performer execution was more than obvious. Moved and played like champions !   Confident, controlled and unwavering in purpose.  Very proud of them.

You are correct Sir. I attended DCI East and the Cadets were much improved. Very proud of that performance from the members!

I totally agree. I also think this staff may be wanting to put too much of an emphasis on a story instead of entertaining. Coming from a Cadets alum, I really wish they would get away from the preachy messages. As a drum corps fan, I like drum corps to give me an escape from real life and just entertain me. THAT is what I want my Cadets to be. A corps that puts out an exciting product that makes me want to smile, stand up and cheer and forget about real life if only for a few minutes. I don't think that's asking too much.

Some of my favorite shows of all time had zero story line but made me feel something.

All of the designers in DCI need to learn a lesson from the Bluecoats. Pick a theme that DOESN'T rely on a storyline! Bluecoats are very entertaining and easy to understand without an underlying storyline. Honestly, when I watch modern drum corps, I completely ignore the storyline.

You are a great person! To support is such a huge deal.

I can understand your disappointment. I am sure the corps appreciates your support and maybe someone that actually knows the details can reply to your original post.

Safe travels and I hope you enjoy the upcoming competitions.

I answered his question. I know the details, however I don't feel have the right to speak about the details. That will have to come from someone within the organization.

What are the number of shows on average that are cancelled annually because of weather conditions?..I know this might be controversial but climate change ( if one is to believe) changing weather patterns in the midwest and northeast might make outdoor venues problematic ..so either require outdoor venues to be on other than grass or roll back the race for prop supremacy..I know the latter is highly unlikely but for those of us who might only be able to afford 1 or 2 shows a year, it"s a bummer to spend time and resources to watch a standstill..peace

My wife and I left when they announced the stand still performance.
