  1. Just returned from Cadets camp. Percussion...OMG! The talent level is simply off the charts. They made a few great additions to an already great staff. They should be something special. The brass staff is establishing a strong program that should be something special once it matures. Not a brass player but word is the talent level is stepped up from last year. Brass and percussion learned about a minute of show music over the weekend. Great to hear the Cadets playing Jay Bocook arrangements again. Cadets fans can relax. The corps is in good shape and they are on a very good trajectory.

That's not what I mean- I am just saying the change will be the focus front and center every opportunity possible.  It sounds like the Scouts are fine, and I sincerely hope so.  I expect to only hear one side of the story, however.

The woke crowd is ascending on our beloved activity. This is a bigger threat to the activity than the standard issues everyone complains about on here.

Aren’t most drum corps fans pulling for their survival? That doesn’t mean it stops them from pointing out things that don’t look good or are troublesome. For the next couple years, signing the contract is at your own risk. There are financial factors at play that can’t be ignored. I care, but not enough to break out the checkbook. My donation won’t save them anyways.

I appreciate your thoughts. However, do you really think the current management team isn't very aware of the valid criticisms that are mentioned on this site? The Cadets are not hiding behind the issues they face. It's easy to sit behind the computer and criticize the Cadets. Bit of a different challenge to be tasked with fixing the issues they face.

    SMART branding lol

The folks on this thread currently degrading the Cadets 2020 / YEA etc are an interesting bunch

Ask yourself - what is driving this? Are they aligned with Hopkins? Or is it other agenda/forces at work here?

One thing is certain - it certainly isn't the "best interest of the current members" they have in mind

    I'm appalled.

You bring up an interesting point. As hard as it is for most corps to survive these days, you would think drum corps fans in general would be pulling for the Cadets to rebound. It is a strange situation.

This. Tom A also mentioned starting fast out of the gate at around 192 for the opener. That Bliss piece had some power to it...even with everyone's personal horns I thought it sounded great.

I did hear that they are going to do some up tempo stuff in the show. And you are correct...the Bliss piece sounded good. Excited to watch this brass line progress under the new staff.

Very pragmatic.  I appreciate the approach.  I'm more optimistic but I admit it's going to be a long haul.  And I firmly believe your words:  Their success is both their best defense against past ghosts and their best weapon to attract new talent.

    We can hope.

So, serious question: Are there any rumblings about their rep for this year?

The only thing I heard at camp was they will have over 3 minutes of music after the next camp in 3 weeks. They did learn a classic Phillip Bliss song though. Sounded really good...not part of the show though. The new brass staff is very impressive and the new brass caption head is the real deal. Clear to see why the Bluecoats were so good under his direction.

Don't recall a lot of trashing replies to those who type up their thoughts from visiting any corps auditions/Winter camps and giving flowing opinions.  You may want to hibernate until ST begins to cut down on possible stress attacks.

    Your recollection is incorrect.

C2 was tough emotionally. this is tough PR wise. after all the hoopla for hiring her with her background, as well as Scott leaving his job to take over and run the corps during it's worst days ever is kind of....no, not kind of IS...a big PR black eye in many ways. Like I said legit business reasons I am sure, but it doesn't look good

How the recent changes look should not be the Cadets main concern at this time. Would it look good and be good PR to let the Cadets fold? There are many factors and moving parts that are behind the recent changes at the Cadets. I wish some would become less cynical and actually support the survival of this great corps.

  9. I believe DCI's new requirements for remaining World Class was a factor in the Cadets recent changes. I'm sure all corps are taking a hard look at their long term financial health. I respect the management team at the Cadets for making tough choices for the future of the organization. I'm glad they are committed to the future of this great drum corps!

No, not necessarily.  It means they are making hard decisions to possibly stop bleeding  << and/or >> head off troubles they see coming.

Many of those decisions, I'm sure, are STILL plugging holes and catching up from years of running on a blade's edge.

It's not the precipice, but that's not to say it's going to be easy, or the same Cadets as in the past.

Thank you sir...you are the voice of reason!

Colin is the main percussion guy (Director of Percussion) . You can find all current corps instructional staff listed on their website.  It lists Kevin Shah and Mike Jackson as consultants.  That seems somewhat clear however there are always more details about consultant roles we don't now about until things are fully underway.  As Jeff Ream said, this may provide a good balance to the percussion book with whatever the program will be this year.

Thanks for the info. I absolutely love Mike Jackson's approach to Drum Corps percussion and his arranging style. I assume he will not be arranging for BAC?

  12. 8 hours ago, Jeff Ream said:

that may lead to a balance last year lacked

Agree, however, who is going to do the arranging? Is Colin or Jackson going to be the main percussion guy? Colin and Jackson seem to follow very different styles of arranging and playing the instrument. Seems as though there could be a conflict of interest with this arrangement. With that said, I should probably wait for more details before forming an opinion. Just seems like an odd situation.

Really, isn't this forum broken down into mostly opinion and speculation?

But I admit, I clicked the laughing emoji because those other two also did first, and it seemed to be such a blatantly obvious statement that I thought you were joking or being sarcastic.

I have this crazy notion that opinions and speculation from educated people should be based on the facts we know. And, if we don't have all the facts, what is the point of drawing conclusions.
