Didn't so much like the treatment of the Shostakovich, but otherwise the music is fantastic.
-
It is awkward when the announcer asks if the corps is ready and receives no response.
Keep in mind that some of the backfield or endzone DMs often do the saluting in these running start shows, e.g., Carolina Crown.Hadn't noticed that - I guess that makes me feel better
-
Sound in the theater really wasn't bad besides the difficulty the bass drums had penetrating. I assume the DVDs will be at least as good.
-
Someone said a few days ago that several corps have recorded with Box 5 Productions this summer. I only have one recording by Box 5 (Crown 2007), but it's spectacular, and I'm curious when/where the 2009 shows will be available.
-
If this the case, does that mean SCV has one more shot at this decade?
I think we've learned that they do have one more shot at this decade, but not at the 2000s. How does that make you feel?
-
Well I guess the other judges on the two previous nights got it wrong then too . They both had The Cadets 3rd....Then Mr game changer comes in and dumps them to 8th? come on 8th? I am sorry but the Cadets are not 8th in anything. This guy changed the game. You can't defend someone who is so Blatant. This does not take away what Crown has done. I like Crown and The Blue Devils. I am not saying that didn't deserve to be in 1st and 2nd. I am just saying that no judge should be able to get away with this crap. This was a deliberate score to change the game and make sure that he could change the game. I think that DCI should never have this guy judge again. He should be fired!
You completely ignored what Mallets said.

This is false..... it might be a little subjective, but not entirely. If you were comparing the two you mentioned above, then it's a tie....they are both at the top, both professionals, both as musical as you could possibly be. I think you can easily compare the musicality of two things (even if they are different) by comparing what is actually there, to how musical it could be.
For instance.... listen to the middle section of the Cadets show (from where they are split up into two groups through the end of the ballad). There is a lot more that could be done here with shaping of phrases and musical nuance. I can't find any section of Crown's show like this. To my ears, Crown is just about the only corps who is really going for the top level of musicality like an orchestra would.
Agreed. The 1984 WSS received a much more musical treatment. I don't know why the Cadets are instructed to play in this way.

tonight further convinved me outside of a sound effect it isnt needed and most of the piano stuff works well on much cheaper vibes and bells
I was about to argue for Crown's use of piano at the beginning of Sensemaya, but I just realized that there is no piano. I was just hearing low marimba and timpani. Would that low marimba even be audible without amps though?
-
Raises a good point. People have argued that pit amps help in big stadia, outdoors... but the corps don't need them in a domed stadium. There is no problem getting that pit sound up to 600 without amps.
Without amps, you couldn't use a piano in the pit, which is something I have enjoyed in this year's shows.

SCV should have beaten them in music
SCV did beat them in music. =)
(That's probably actually what you meant)

The Visual GE judges really disagreed on cadets placement
Same thing happened to Crown last night.
-
Just found out that not only have Crown, Bluecoats, and Madison done their annual post season recordings, but....
Santa Clara Vanguard has also done a post season recording session as well. All four corps have hired Box5 Productions to produce the recordings.
Whaa? Are these available for purchase through Box 5?

The show violates its own internal logic with abandon. Why bother paying attention when every interaction between them is made inconsequential in the end?
===
Stupid serious question; if the chairs have some issues covering down, who makes a note of that on their sheet?
I think the two characters were designed for a more abstract interpretation than what you want to give them.
-
Honest question: "did anyone actually follow the two characters in CC's show?"
Not the entire time. There are a few key moments though.
-
I do have to agree with that. I watch the videos of corps pre-2000 and it was all about the music. Granted, there were some shows with props and magic tricks (scv 89) but it was still, All. About. The music. I think that if the theatrical element was thrown out, that the top 12 this year would be mixed up like some sort of alphabet soup. hmmm... wonder what it would be like... *slips into daydream*

My thoughts exactly. It's been my favorite show of the year since that first airing in Walnut, CA, and there just isn't a more magical, breathtaking, captivating show than this one this year. Just...sublime.
Even the chattering high school band kids filling up the theater tonight were silenced by it. And I believe that speaks volumes.
Oh yeah, two things shut everyone up. SCV and Crown's preshow.

i dont know what he said since i didnt go but it seems like it was something he shouldnt have said.
All I remember DeLucia saying is that the show didn't have much emotional impact for him.

5. Cadets - Not sure whats going on with them, but there is something missing in this show.
Dynamics. Their use of dynamics does nothing for me musically.
-
I would like to see Colts overtake Troopers, Glassmen are ranked way too high for how disappointing their music is, and I thought Vanguard had a stronger show than the Cadets tonight. Otherwise, I'm happy, and the broadcast was great.

1. 2005
2. 2007
3. 2008, 2009
5. 2006
Angelus was one of the first drum corps shows I'd ever heard, and I've been hooked on Crown's sound ever since. I don't think I'll be able to decide between 2008 and 2009 until the broadcast Thursday.
-
There's a finals video on the tubey thing in which Crown sounds to have had a tear at the beginning of the festival overture section, but the camera is off to the side of the stands, so I'm not sure
EDIT: I shouldn't say tear, more like the trumpets weren't together for a second
-
From what I understand, they'll ('07 Finals) be available next month.
Cool, but I meant the 2008 finals =P
I guess I'll have to settle for less legitimate means of watching the shows until they're available by VPD
-
Actually, the '07 VPD's aren't availble yet.
Seriously? That doesn't bode well for stingy fans like me who want to see the finals shows without buying the DVD

Ok, I thought it was great that they interviewed the judges during the theatre broadcast on Thursday. After watching it, I was very surprised that DCI would even allow something like that. Did anybody notice how dumb and inconsistent these judges looked and sounded?
When asked about different things, and how the judges were compared to each other, their answers were vague and distorted.
And not one of them knew the first thing about judging. Not one of them knew the key word-CRITERIA. Not one judge uttered this word. Not one judge mentioned the criteria that is set for judging, and then how the judges react/acknowledge the performance as far as the judges sheets go-based on this criteria.
Didn't anybody else watch these interviews and notice this? I think DCI just lost worlds of credibility by showing these incompetent interviews. This is the stuff they have been hiding behind for the last 20 years.
I didn't get that feeling at all. You can hardly judge them based on the few seconds each was interviewed.
"anybody notice how dumb ... these judges looked and sounded"
Now that's just mean.

They play movement 2 from symphony 10. Some of the arranging is good, other parts just feel gimmicky with power chords randomly thrown in.
