  1. Hello I am a horn player and I would like to know if anyone can give me any tips on how to become a drumajor, like what to do to get ready to try-out, thanks and hope some one can tell me.

there is this GREAT dm camp in Boise Id. its the best. is you want more info google it. its called 'calvalcade"

  2. I know what you mean. If you play enough with one pair of sticks the right hand stick inevitably becomes a little lighter than the left hand stick due to rimshots.

My right stick tends to be lighter because it is played with a bit more harder than my left hand....yes....due to rim shots. good point. I never tape my sticks...i use vics and i hate all the extra junky weight on the sticks when you put tape on them.

anyways...back to the topic.. I would use an electric scale ( the ones that go to the like 100th place :P ) and do that. most high schools should have one somewhere in there athletic department...

  3. Has anyone out there ever been able to tell which one of their sticks belongs in the left hand verus the right hand just by picking them up and feeling the difference................

???? is the heavier one supposed to go in left or what??

    (playing traditional style)

  4. The college band didn't assign audition material?

I suggest finding rudimental solos out of any of the Wilcoxin books, or in a more modern corps style Colin McNutt's "In the Lot" book. I hear that’s a really good one. I don't own it, but I know folks who do and love it.

Practice sight reading...I'm not sure if college marching band auditions would have sight reading, but you never know. And it wouldn't hurt.

I've also been asked to play rolls with different metric basses while marking time. (Both on Snare and on Bass...just to see if I could roll on bass.) As well as rudiments...so polish up on those too.

Contact the Band director or Percussion instructor to find out what their expectations are. Some college bands are not of the same caliber of DCI and DCA lines. Also try to get in touch with current students who march in the drumline there. They would be your best resource.

    Good luck! :)

they had assigned material...but we need to perform a piece of our choice...thank you!

  5. Just wanted to get some opinions here. What company do you feel makes the best mallets and concert sticks for a indoor front ensemble.

I'm kinda leaning towards Innovate or Vic but I've played on some pro mark in the past and I was impressed.

    Any advice welcome. Thanks.

edit: oops ment Vater not Musser :P

innovative for front ensemble, vic firth for marching.......thats just one guys opionion. I would average all responses and then pick what you want..

  6. Im trying out for a college drumline. They are pretty good. I asked my drum coach what i should play for auditions...he gave me this piece called "Trooper's Cadence" ( has anyone played that one?) and i feel like its too easy. I got it memorized in three days..... I dont want to play something at a college audition thats too easy for me...does anyone have any suggestions on challenging snare pieces for an audition?

  7. Doesn't Vic Firth usually have at least a FEW lot videos of DCI corps up by now? Anybody know what's going on?

idk whats going on. usually they have a lot of vangaurd stuff up...hmm....

  8. I'll preface this by saying that I'm pretty much against all amplified vocals...however, this corps is so good that I don't care. Sure, I would definitely enjoy the show more without it, but this is one heck of a drum corps! The only thing that scares me is that if they win - then the amplification of vocals may be emulated more in the marching community (something I'm not a fan of period).

For now, I have to give these performers some serious credit - they are performing the heck out of what they've been given.

i would have to agree with you on that one.......

  9. Well, I saw this year's Cadets show. The music is killer, the drill looks good, but the narration...EEEWWWWWW! I am an alumnus of the corps, and love the maroon and gold, but the narration flat-out SUCKS!!! It's NON-STOP throughout the show, and really detracts from what would otherwise be a kick-*** show.

Someone had it up on YouTube, but it got pulled down.

I gotta tell ya, I see this as being another 2006. When you see it, you'll understand what I mean. I pray I'm wrong, and most of it gets pulled from the show.

Anyone else see this on YouTube before it got yanked?

yeah.........i saw the youtube before it got torn. They were coming to my town (Boise, ID) and i was totally phsyched to hear that they were coming, cuz the best weve had out here for a while was scv. I wanted to see some competition. After i saw the youtube version....i was hoping that live it would be a lot better. its july 31 so im still pumped to see it...but yeah. i dont like it eitheir...i wonder how many complaints the actual cadets have heard???

  10. I don't agree with this at all. I feel dutting is a crutch and sounds ridicules. If you can't follow the major and dut softly enough that the whole stadium can't hear you, there's a problem. I actually never could dut, it messed me up. I always hummed the beat to myself and never had any problems. We also used pick-up notes to help with attacks, which I also feel was a crutch.

I can only dut for certain times during a show.....otherwise i mess up cuz of time changes and stuff. i agree....keep it to yourself...
