  5. EARLY APRIL CAMP REPORT This is the April 2014 Report for The Skyliners! The Skyliners just finished a successful camp weekend on March 29th and 30th. As most of you know, we had our DCA Evaluation this weekend. We couldn't be more proud as we PASSED our evaluation. We will be coming to a show near you this summer! since we did the St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 15th, the corps has begun to aspire to another level. All sections are really becoming one within themselves and the corps is really starting to work together well. The horn line has 8 minutes of show done. They will complete the book this coming weekend. The percussion sections are at about 6 1/2 minutes. The goal is for all sections to have the show done by May 1st. The Color Guard is beginning to learn work to go with the show this coming weekend. The brass section and color guard will go outside this coming weekend to start drill. The goal is to have the opening statement and 1/3 of "Blue Skies" on the field by the end of the day. Just as a reminder - Our show "A New Dawn, A New Day" consists of "Feelin' Good", "Blue SKies", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "'Round Midnight", and we close with "Caravan". As far as our current numbers: Brass line is now at 29. We've set the drill for 32 brass. Battery Percussion - Battery is now at 4 snares, 1 tenors, 5 bass, 3 cymbals. We would like 1 or 2 more snares and at least 1 tenor player to fill out the section. Pit Percussion is doing very well. We are at 10 players there. The pit is closed. Color Guard is growing and now at 19. Our next rehearsals are: Saturday, April 5th for brass and guard only from 10-6. Sunday, April 6th for percussion only, 11-5. Thanks and as always, you can contact me a Larry@skylinersdbc.org. Donations are always welcome. Go to www.sky2014.org and click on the DONATE tab. Thanks! Larry

The parade kicks off at 11:45. It will be televised locally on Channel 22, WYOU in Scranton. We are in Division 5. After the parade, we will post video and pictures of the day. Thanks for all your support and kind words so far. Next step - to the FIELD! Larry
  8. EARLY MARCH CAMP REPORT This is the March 2014 Report for The Skyliners! Things are going well despite this brutal winter we are having here in Northeast PA. Attendance remains good. We are very pleased with the corps' progress so far. The horn line has finished the third number and getting ready to learn the ballad. Percussion has the opener learned and completed the second number. Just as a reminder - Our show "A New Dawn, A New Day" consists of "Feelin' Good", "Blue SKies", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "'Round Midnight", and we close with "Caravan". Hard to believe we are into March. If the weather breaks, the brass section will start drill on the 29th of March. Musically, we will continue to push forward to get the show completed before the end of April. We have been preparing for our first public appearance. We will be marching in the Scranton St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 15th. The corps is very excited about this. We've fit everyone for uniforms and practicing parade music. We have a tremendous support staff that helped get us ready. My thanks to all that helped. We could not do this without your love and support. As far as our current numbers: Brass line is still in the mid 20's. Since we've had another contra player joined, we've moved 3 contras over to baritone to give us a better balance. Of course, we can always use more lead sopranos. And we still have 6 contras who get stronger every rehearsal. Battery Percussion - Battery is now at 5 snares, 2 tenors, 5 bass, 3 cymbals. Pit Percussion is doing very well. We are at 10 players there. Color Guard is growing and now at 19. We've also announced our remaining drum majors. Adam Burdett, Steph Carbonell, Elena Dominick, and Rebecca Colwell will lead us onto the field. Next big day for us? We have our DCA Evaluation coming up at the end of March. We are very excited and look forward to passing this with flying colors. Our next rehearsals are: March 16th, 11-7, March 29th, 2-8 and March 30th, 11-7 for the entire corps. My next report will be in early April. Thanks and as always, you can contact me a Larry@skylinersdbc.org. Donations are always welcome. Go to www.sky2014.org and click on the DONATE tab. Thanks! Larry

Larry
  10. This is the January 2014 Report for The Skyliners! We just completed our first full month of rehearsals at Sky. Attendance is ok considering we've had a lot of snow up here in Northeastern PA. Overall, we are very pleased with the corps' progress so far. The horn line has about finished the first two numbers. Percussion has the opener learned and about 1/2 of the second number. Just as a reminder - Our show "A New Dawn, A New Day" consists of "Feelin' Good", "Blue SKies", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "'Round Midnight", and we close with "Caravan". In our February rehearsals, brass will start on the next section of the show. Percussion will finish the second number and begin the next section later in the month. Along with the music, the visual staff is hard at work molding our appearance. Basics blocks take up a good portion of each rehearsal. We have lots of people from different programs. It is important that they learn one marching program - THE SKYLINERS marching program. We are also preparing for our first public appearance. We will be marching in the Scranton St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 15th. The corps is very excited about this. We've begun fitting everyone for uniforms and practicing parade music. As far as our current numbers: Brass line is in the mid-20's. We'd like to fill that out more especially in the baritone line. Of course, soprano and mellophone players are very welcome. We have 8 contras - a beautiful, deep sound to build from. Battery Percussion - Battery is currently at 4 snares, 2 tenors, 5 bass, 3 cymbals. Pit Percussion is doing very well. We are at 12-14 players there. Color Guard is currently at 16. Everyone is working very hard. As a Director, I can't be more thankful for the great staff we have. More importantly, the members are really excited about building this corps again. They all love being SKYLINERS! Openings are available is all sections. People are asking, "what is your goal, Class A or Open?". My answer is that The Skyliners will be competing this year. No matter what class is chosen, it doesn't matter. We will do the best we can in whatever class we end up in. The goal is to have the corps back on the field. Period. I've attached a video of our January camp. Enjoy! If you have any questions, my email address is Larry@skylinersdbc.org. http://youtu.be/KEsN8abnn2U Our next rehearsals are at Wyoming Valley West HS, 150 Wadham St., Plymouth, PA: February 1st, 10-6 for Brass and Guard. February 2nd, 12-6 for Percussion. Thanks! Larry

  20. Bucky Swan.... I didn't know Bucky as well or as long as some of you. I came into the Skyliners in 2000. Bucky was always around and Roger Ellis was right....Bucky would always work towards getting us to play like "Skyliners". A personal story....I was trying to get some traction for a junior corps in Hopatcong, Nj called Bishop's Rock. This was 1999, 2000 or so. The township had a summer rec program and we were allowed to put a program in. I thought it would be cool to teach young kids, 8 to 10 years old to play a soprano bugle. We didn't think anyone would sign up but as it turned out, we had 8 kids jump into the week long program. I was talking with Bucky about it and he said "hey, if you need someone to help teach, I'll do it." I accepted his offer and he drove from The Amboys up to Hopatcong everyday for a week to teach these kids for an hour. The kids had a BALL. They actually nicknamed Bucky "The Cookie Man". The reason was because he taught the kids to make believe they were blowing cookie crumbs through the lips to make the sound in the horn. The bigger the crumb, the bigger the sound they could make. I asked Bucky, what do I owe ya ? He said in his way, "just get me a beer next time we get a chance." Of course, next rehearsal, I brought 2 cases and put them into his car. I was so appreciative of his work with our township kids..... Bucky will be missed for his passion for the activity and especially for The Skyliners. He has been with and around the organization for more than 57 years. I only wish he was here to see the rebirth of the corps. I know he'll be proud. Next time we sing the corps song, we do it for all past and present Skyliners, but we'll lift a glass and sing it to you, Bucky.....the tears may be in our eyes but they represent the sparkle you had for us in your eyes for all those years.... Rest in Peace, Bucky. The Swan Dive won't be the same without you. We send our condolences, prayers and love to Bucky's family and all those in the drum corps community who mourn this tragic loss.
