But God forbid a Cavalier "borrows" something from BD and the kid has Gibbs' lawyers all over them and Cavaliers have to send the kid home for the season. Different scales of justice?

Photoshop. No way does a person with the left leg of a 95 year old march with BD. Heavy pixellation at the left wrist, perspective on the carpet is all over the place...not buying it. Even if it isn't, the chances are just about as good that someone got a BD top to make this pic.

Almost always. Patrick Seidling posted today that due to construction activity at the Colts training facility, they cannot allow any visitors for today's and tomorrow's rehearsals. Only members and instructors are allowed on site. Note: This is not the Blue Devils' decision but the Colts management decision.

Well yes of course, never on their own accord. They’re fortunate to be in there, and though I’d have loved to sit in, I’m sure the Colts determined that being there on a workday was too dangerous. Hopefully we can get in there Saturday.

I doubt they will hit 99. Very much doubt.

I'd say comparatively a 98.00 at the most. They should beat BD by half a point and their show is worth about 97.25, so maybe SCV will hit 97.75-98.

They do a lot.of things well, but in order to get that 99, you need to win the large majority of sub captions and 2nd in the ones you don't win.

They're not running away with GE or anything for that matter.

Hey guys, does anybody know if BDs rehearsal is open to the public tomorrow?  I am arriving in INDY at 5 and they are practicing relatively close to my hotel.

I'd love to go catch what they are doing in person.

This year I skipped out on DCI West because I knew I was headed to the finals.

    ALWAYS open to the public.

Not insulting BD at all. They are the best drum corps in the land and they have proved it 18 times! They know what they are doing and i’m Sure you know that too. But your Babel tower reference was flawed and my corellary although anecdotal, was accurate. We can just agree that there are different strokes for different folks.

Hahaha! No, it's not the same thing and my reference was NOT flawed. BD show concentrates on the stories of the characters in the painting. They take a literal painting backdrop and build that. The Tower of Babel thing is more figurative, and I don't see it out of their show. If they went to some huge and tall stage at the end, that would be cool...and maybe it will happen. Two great corps going at it. I like all of the top three. They all have their pros and cons. Not my favorite BD show lately by a longshot, but I haven't seen live since Riverside. I'll never count them out though. I love SCV's show, but was mostly getting across that it should be okay to NOT have a theme. You attending this week? Maybe I'll buy you a beer.

That’s a puzzle. The art is at the end and just a rendering of another’s creation. The music,  mood and movement is the focus. Just like SCV, and BDcorno’s comment about the Tower of Babel being 6-8 feet high. That’s like saying there wasn’t a painter with a brush in the BD show.

You see, there you go. Talking about SCV's show IS NOT TALKING ABOUT BD'S SHOW, MAKING A COMPARISON OR OTHERWISE DOING ANYTHING BUT ANALYZING THE SHOW. I've judged for many years, and I'm breaking it down from a judge's standpoint. Obviously you take my analysis as an offense, and attempt to insult BD as some sort of retaliation. Well, it's DCP after all. Should expect this. Buh bye.

The show about differing languages and the difficulty of understanding one another as a result is a loud and clear message???

Exactly.  My basic point is, they have oversold the program as something very deep and profound, when it would be absolutely 100% fine with no theme and no deeper intent than playing the music and doing the visual. I guess you could say the Burger King Whopper reflects the struggle of bovines vs. commercialization and exploitation by humankind. Yeah that’s it.

I agree wholeheartedly.  There isn't some theme or idea being crammed down your throat.  I generally don't favor shows that rely on narrative/characterizations, or some other "concept".  I feel like I'm charged with solving a puzzle and that is highly distracting.

SCV doesn't make those demands of the audience.  We are able to engage in the show on a non-literal level, and simply experience it.

I understand your position, and also that of BD79-82 that you responded to. At the same time, this is the conundrum with SCV's show. [disclaimer: not lobbying for anything here, just pointing something out] It can certainly stand on its own with just music and visual and GE. BUT....watch the SCV-produced videos that have the designers talking about "Babylon" and the deep, emotional design that "they've built into the show". It's wonderfully constructed, but after watching the video, I was actually less positive about the show. Are they "shoe horning" a persona, a theme, and intent on a show that should just be a show of music and visual? Is it, or would it be wrong for any corps to just put a show out there without a name, theme or other "deeper meaning"? I don't think so, but since you assign all this meaning and theme to the show, shouldn't the corps and designers be taken to task if they're not projecting that when you watch? Phil Madden (at Atlanta) was the only person that seemed to pick up on this a bit, and had them third in GE visual rep. I don't get the Tower of Babel out of a 6-8 foot high prop...get a bit of an "urban" feel with the close quarters show design that they use throughout, and if someone didn't tell you what the nets were about, I don't think anyone here could honestly say what the intent or message was without prior explanation. Sooooo...I see what you're saying, Stu...but I think there is a theme being crammed into a show that shouldn't have to be. Since they did, they actually ARE making those demands, and if you're not getting it, then aren't they failing at the communication? I agree, I love the show and you can watch it on a non-literal level and enjoy it...but that's not how you're supposed to watch it. According to their designers.

I've seen comments throughout the season calling SCV's show this year innovative and ahead of its time.

Admittedly, I don't see it. To me, they seem to be doing the same things that Bloo, BD, and Crown have been pioneering the past decade

Body movement, dance breaks, follow the leader, (fantastic) staging, mic'd soloists/ensembles, long melodic ballad, mysterious voiceovers, interactive props, mellophone rips, screamers, no helmets, flexible costuming, etc etc.

None of these are necessarily bad things. The show itself is fantastic and deserved frontrunner for 1st place. I'm just confused on where people are seeing the innovation

    Anyone have some insight?

Or Digger's Diner at Willow Pass and Farm Bureau...

We used to hit the Wendy's in Pacheco during lunch/dinner break.  Drive to it quickly by leaving Mars and going past Buchanan Airport and the trailer park .

Had many a cheap meal at the burger shop at Detroit and Monument. Only a block down from our apartment. Would buy breakfast and split it three ways. Had to save up for beer you know.

Very true. And while BD has been cleaning, practicing, drilling, adjusting....SCV is not sitting on their laurels. I think they will come out of the gate w/ a bit more firepower. They were second last year and that equals just one thing that BD might not have given its young corp....HUNGER!

Agreed. SCV is hungry, have a great staff and a veteran corps. And they have the popular support right now. Will be tough to beat. Wonder what Gaines has cooked up for Indy.

Same was true last year. But BD didn’t have the prelims/semis runs to back it up, and that’s kind’ve all that matters at this point. Like last year, SCV’s got cleanliness and elegance on its side — and frankly their book is even better than last year’s, that closing flag work has been god-level clean for some time now, and is beautifully written. BD’s got more of the little errors to clean, IMO, but that’s the result of such a difficult, exposed show. Nowhere to hide!

Agreed. They have to step up and perform otherwise they won’t get the credit

I would guess it happened sometime around 1982. Huge transformation all the way around. They ditched the traditional unis and went to straw hats, Hawaiian shirts, and Converse high tops.

This is a video that someone shot during an early season retreat that year. The drum majors played up their California beach bum persona by setting up lawn chairs and a drink cooler instead of the usual standing at attention. And this time, the Blue Devil DMs got into the act. I've read other accounts that DMs from other corps also began pranking the VK DMs during retreat throughout that season.

That's a classic. I was at this show, and had just latched on with VK for DCI tour. What a fun group, show and kids.
