  1. What if Kiwanis Kavaliers or some of the other recently departed corps were still around? Would you be issuing the same letter of question? Perhaps Pioneer really is getting the score that thier program deserves. Sure nobody wants to see a corps be an annual punching bag; but look where the rest of Divsion 1 is and where Pioneer is. There just isn't anyone for Pioneer to compete nor contend with. This is a problem that Roman is going to have to deal with. It's his corps, his program, his calling the shots, his design, his problem. They had thier opportunities to grow and flourish in '97 and '98 and they blew it with thier programming and design. They've been on the decline ever since. I do not wish Pioneer gone, either; but there is a lot that Roman needs to evaluate if he wishes to see his organization where a lot of people would like to see it.

Roman does a great job at keeping Pioneer going year-to-year, so I don't think you would need to worry about them folding.

  2. For as much as I dislike what Pioneer does, I feel somewhat bad for those members. I'm sure they are going out there and busting thier bottoms, like everyone else; however, they are falling further and further behind.

I understand the whole identity and image thing, and that's all cool; but perhaps it's time that Roman loosen up a bit and explore some contempory Irish themes and music.

  3. It will be rather unfortunate if Pioneer and Academy, after a long enough hiatus, come out and start leap frogging other corps by leaps and bounds; especially Academy-2007's "darlings of Division One."

My grumpy belief: you tour, you get scored and get points; you lack in touring, you don't get scored, therefore no points, and you should have to claw your way back up. There are many corps that are touring right now, on the road, going at it day in and day out. Those corps that choose a limited tour, should have to work thier way up, just like everyone else. I don't believe in just giving points so that a corps can keep pace. Unless there is some ultra-miraculus growth and change in Pioneer's and Academy's programs, they should start off right where they left off. I don't see Pioneer getting a 5-8 point, automatic score increase; but I can most definitely see that happening with Academy.

You tour, you earn! You stay home, you drop!

  4. Bring back the top 25! Let more corps, in! Do not eliminate quarters. As stated, a lot of folks wait until DCI week to get thier drum corps fill and seeing all those corps, all three days, means a lot. Moreover, most of the die hards (that are left), go on Thursday and Friday to see everyone. True, there aren't as many D1 corps competing anymore; but that does not mean that the week should be cut down and have even more corps shut out.

I'm sure, eventually, Teal Sound and Jersey Surf would love to join the ranks of world class. Moreover, if Southwind and the Seattle Cascades can manage to return, they would like to have that Thursday show as well.

  5. I once had a corps director that would say "...and on any given night," while wearing his tattered Melissa Manchester cap.

Tonight was another night for the Blue Stars. Perhaps tomorrow will be somebody else's night. Based on the fan support these corps are getting, I'm pretty sure there are some fine shows out there this year.

  6. Ahhh, the Michigan City show. Great crowds! Pain in the a** to get on the field. Tight parking for the corps vehicles. The occasional train and Metras that pass by from time-to-time. The grocery store where you can catch random staff members stocking up for the next trip. And the Dairy Queen, Mmmm! Somebody have a Mint Oreo Blizzard for me!
