  1. I vote for the corps who are remaining very quiet -

not saying very much, but producing extraordinary

    shows as we speak.

They're holding back, keeping chatter to themselves,

waiting for the chance to surprise everyone with a

production that is unexpected right from the "get-go".

    Let's put THAT list together!

I have heard very little from Carolina Crown and the Blue Stars. I hope they both build off of what I thought were very entertaining 2006 shows.

  2. How can they not be better? Many people on this board crack me up. The big complaint about the corps last year was that their visual show held them back. So they go out and make what appears to be a big upgrade in visual staff. The rest of the staff stays the same. It llok like they have a big group of returning vets and just went through a series of very successful audition camps. I would be very surprised if they are not noticibly better in 2007 than they were in 2006. I think people are drastically underestimating what the Blue Stars will accomplish in 2007.

By the way, can anyone tell me how many times since 1980 a corps with Donnie VanDoren on staff failed to make finals?

  3. Based on the winter , last season , and nothing at all.

    1-Blue Devils

    2-SCV

    3-Cavies

    4-Phantom

    5-Bluecoats

    6-Cadets

    7-Crown

    8-Glassmen

    9-Crossmen

    10-Blue knights

    11-Colts

    12-Madison /Spirit

    ---------------------

    13-madison /Spirit

    14- Boston

    15-Blue stars

    16-Troopers

    17-Academy

Just curious, what has Crossmen and Colts done this fall that would indicate such a big jump in placement? What has Spirit, Boston and Blue Stars done to indicate a fall? How can the Troopers come back after a year off and have their highest placement in twelve years? Not that your predictions will not come true, but hard to see the justification for predicting this in November.

By the way, yes I am a Blue Star alum and based on what I am hearing about staff and member retention, audition camp turnout and momentum, I believe the Blue Stars will improve on last years placement.

  4. I'm not sure what you mean by "front office" ... but as Board President I can tell you that we are very pleased with Mr. Hickman. We are solidly behind his leadership; including his educational philosophy, vision, ethics, selection of staff, etc. The quality of experience that 135 young women and men, support staff and instructional staff receive with the GLASSMEN is, in no small part, directly influenced by our Executive Director. There is no "impatience" at the Board level. We are thankful for his 10 years of service with the Corps and wish for many, many more to follow.

Every season is a "big one" for him (and the Board), but as far as determining his future with the GLASSMEN, that is nothing more than, as you say, "rumor." May I add ... UNFOUNDED at that.

The advancement of such a rumor may call the poster's character, motive, and/or maturity into question, but certainly NOT Mr. Hickman's employment.

Thank you. Well said and appropriate considering the content of the original post.

  5. It's '79 Crossmen, and it's not really even close. It was a finalist corps and show that had the misfortune to have a blah prelims performance with a panel that wasn't gonna give em benefit of the doubt, coupled with an inspired Troopers performance earlier in the day. They were on track, up until that Friday afternoon, to be a top 8 corps in Finals Saturday night,

Most of the rest of this list were good shows, but not shows that had been in position to be solid finalists

The Crossmen were never on track to be a top eight corps late in 1979. They had 11th place written all over them going into prelims, losing to the Blue Stars, North Star and Guardsmen in the shows leading up to finals week. One week before finals, the Crossmen were 7th at DCI East, losing to many of the corps they would have had to have beaten to finish in the top ten. The Crossmen limped into prelims with no momentum at all.

  6. I am thinking it will be the best semi-finals ever. I see 16 corps that are finals worthy in many years, There are three corps that seem capable of winning the title (and that does not include the defending champions who I believe could be on fire come finals week). Six through ten are all great. Madison, currently in 10th, looked much improved tonight (the home crowd will love them). Throw in the Blue Stars returning to D1 in their home state and the Madison Alumni Corps and Friday night, August 11, might be the greatest night of drum corps anybody has seen.

  7. I think the X-Men are going to have some tricks up their sleeves for the ending to that show - its not quiet there yet.

I think they are a step up (3-5points) from Blue Stars. Although not as clean yet, Crossmen's show is more demanding. (IMHO)

That is funny - I was thinking that the Blue Stars were at least equal to or not better than the Crossmen today. I was very pleasantly surprised by the Blue Stars visula show. Of course I am somewhat biased.

  8. If the Blue Stars perform on Friday night in Madison, that will be a huge accomplishment. Think back to the spring when people were making their 2006 predections. Not many outside the Blue Star family had them pegged as a semi finalist. Everyone will know where they stand after Saturday. If is 14 or 15, I will be very happy.

  9. Not sure if this was just local to the groups I was part of or not, but in the 70s we often would talk about the Curse of 7th Place. It had to do with who got 7th at DCI finals each year. For some reason we believed that when you got that place, you were doomed in the future. Anyone else remember this or was this just me?

I did some research to see if it held up, and partially does until 1980, then its gone:

1972 - Des Plaines Vanguard, in 1973 dropped out of finals, then gone a year or two later

    1973 - 27th, eventually gone but not til 80s

1974 - De Lasalle Oaklands, almost gone until merged with Toronto

1975 - Kilties, eventually gone but not til 80s

1976 and 1977 - Cavies, dropped to 16th in 78, but recovered (thank God)

    1978 - 27th, see above

    1979 - Guardsmen, gone eventually

    1980 - SCV, still here!

    1981 - Cadets, still here!

    Whadyathink?

I think five out of the eight corps (or six out of nine if you count the tie in 1977) that finished in ninth palce during the 70s did not make finals the following year. We can come up with other curses if we try.
