The Blue Stars were in a show in Charleston, WV in 1979 that is one of my great drum corps memories. We were not all that pumped for the show because our housing sucked and we had no competition for our position. Blue Devils were obviously ahead of us and the third place corps that night was not a threat (I think it was Offensive Lion). The stadium in Charleston is right on I77 and as we approached it we were shocked to see a completely packed concert side. The crowd was great. I don't know if we played for a larger crowd that year other than the championships.

This thread is more fun if the stories told are actually true. I can add a few.
In 1979 the Blue Stars had a staff member who may have been the last hippie wannabe. He enjoyed running naked through woods at night (that way he could be close to nature). One night, on tour, while doing his thing, he decides taking a dump in the great outdoors is a natural act. He then used poison ivy leaves to wipe. A few days later he found out that poison ivy on your ### is not an enjoyable circumstance.
In 1978I saw a Madison Scout tymp player smash a drunk between his tymp and the member marching in front of him as the Scouts were preparing to march onto the field before a show. The drunk was trying to break ranks. He made it through, but the pain associated with a tymp leg in the ear probably stayed with him for quite some time.
Which corps does not have story about smuggling beer out of Canada back in the 70s and 80s? Maybe this is still happening.

Sadly, I must agree with Lizz. The Spartans did not cover themselves in glory on Saturday. The behavior of ther staff after the show was not one of their proudest moments. Screaming & yellling not only at the DCI guy, but also each other.
Controversy nonetheless (seems like there always is when 2 corps battle it out all Summer) the 2 groups (Spartans & ECJ) have clearly distanced themselves from the rest of the Div 2 pack. Don't be surprised top see Surf push hard to the Atlantic Division trifecta.
How can you say they have clearly distanced themselves from the rest of the DII pack when they have not competed against anyone from the midwest or west? Maybe they will turn out to be the class of the division, but I would wait until at least the Mich City show to make a statement like above. All in good fun.

The Kilties dropped from 7th in 1975 to 28th in 1976. They jumpedback to 10th in 1977. So, they had a drop of 21 places and a jump of 18 places all in a three year period.

1977 Crossmen drum major does a tremendous toss and catch of a mace at the beginning of the show. The crowd is giving him some love and he promptly jumps up on his podium and falls off the side.

and there's me on side 1 on the 45.
Great shot Cliff. I have to assume I am on the 45 on side 2. I was Schultz's opposite and that sure looks like Schultz directly behind you on the yeard line.

Didn't get to keep the uniform and I am sure that if I had, it would not fit.
Now how about a twist - do you still have your corps jacket from when you marched and DOES IT STILL FIT? Mine does but it's tight!
I think it's time to get a new one B)
Yes, but Sev, can you zip the jacket up while wearing it? I cannot.

Blue Starts 1972
Phantom Regiment 1989
Those are two that stand out for me.

When I marched in the 70's with the Blue Stars, one group that seemed to always catch my ear was the Emerald Knights from Iowa. They always seemed to have some great lead soprano's and I would think to myself, "why don't they come to La Crosse and march with a top 12 corps?"
Then nine Emerald Knight members did come up to LaCrosse to march in 1979 and you took the summer off!

This is great! Very funny. Thanks for sharing.

I remember 4th of July retreats being a good time. In 1978 all the corps sat and watched the fireworks above Soldier's Field in Chicago.
-
I was lucky enough to be there that night. The run-off shows were very emotional. What I remember most is Phantom had a very ###### off looking tymp player front and center.

According to a poster on the Blue Stars messages board, the Blue Stars received a 1.5 point penalty.

In another thread someone mentions the Long Island Kingsmen from 1979. I went and checked out their scores from that year and saw that they began the season in early June with a 62 and ended the season in 21st place with a 72, a 10 point change. We have had plenty of talk about big changes in score throughout a season. What about little changes? What was the least amount of score change for a top 25 corps through a full season?
-
Wait a second, don't lump the Blue Stars in with Phantom when it comes to complaining about the Marquis beating them in June of 1976. I don't recall any Blue Stars who marched that year saying the Marquis did not deserve to beat them early in the season. The Marquis came out very prepared that year and deserved the scores and placements they received.

Sev - the Blue Stars were a top five hornline in 1979 as well. I wonder if Don Hill still uses the Bobby Knight teaching style? What is interesting is that we never had more than two or three horn instructors. The Blue Stars list eight members of the brass staff this year plus a ninth as the arranger. There is no doubt the members today receive much more individual attention.

In 1977, the Crossman drum major slipped off the podium while jumping on it right after tossing and catching a mace to start the show.

I guess the Blue Stars got a little tired of all the talk about how the east and west coast corps were outscoring them. Just goes to show, you cannot compare scores until the regions start to meet up.
