  1. Correct. It was a different time back then. And thats what " BAC " stood for as their initials in the 60's. "Liahona", a poster on here that marched in the 80's with the Boston Crusaders is likewise correct when she refers to the Boston Crusaders as " BAC " for " Boston Area Crusaders ". The Boston Crusaders were actually called the Most Precious Blood Crusaders in the 40's and 50's ( or "MPBC", their nickname then ) and were from the Hyde Park section of Boston. Mostly marchers came from the Most Precious Blood parish itself. In the 80's, the Boston Crusaders had to legally change their name to simply " Boston " under the court temporary bancruptcy and reorganization requirement.

If posters still want " BAC " initials to be referred as " Bad Asss Crusaders " today...well, thats cool too. I don't think the current corps marchers would mind one bit.

    LOL....the she is a he btw BRASSO...guess I'm stuck with that name....LOL

  2. You have a point. Every year we have predictions on here and its amazing how many people predict the Glassmen to fall out of the Top 12. For years we've seen these predictions of them falling out of the top 12. But the Glassmen have made the Finals 14 out of the last 15 years.

yep as I said before..old faithful or old reliable...

  3. I'm really confused on what i should do. I'm definitely trying out for glassmen because it is relatively close to my home, but what if that doesn't work out? Where should I go? I was looking into corps such as teal sound, Jersey surf, and the colts. The only problem is getting to those places. I live in the Detroit area. I cant really travel too far just for auditions or rehearsals. is there any way a corp will just let me do a video audition and not require an in person one? I could probably travel to the colts but that's like 8 hours of a ride and i wouldn't want to do that unless i knew i had a spot. I'm just kinda confused.

Contact each corps individually and find out their auditioning procedures. They are all different. Hope this helps.

  4. Very nice Glassmen. Opening up the spread on Colts and closing a little on Boston. Hopefully that can translate to catching SOA. But everyone will just keep putting corps ahead of them, cause that's what you you do with the Glassmen. Oh well. Let the scores do the talking Glassmen and keep it up.

I'm going with reliable Glassmen for finals....even though I'd love to see either SOA, The Academy,Colts Crossmen, or Troopers there...unfortuanately they can't all make it...

  5. The Boston Crusaders does not raise funds to run its corps from Clearwater, Florida. If it secured its primary fundraising funds to run it's Corps from Clearwater, Fl. that might be appropriate. The Boston Crusaders however organizes and implements it's primary fund raising efforts in the Boston region, and with volunteers organizing the fund raising efforts that come from the Boston area, and with the donations coming from the generosity of donors living predominently in the Boston region. Thus, they are appropriately named the " Boston Crusaders".

Where members in Corps come from these days has no bearing on the naming rights on the Corps. That went out the window decades ago as World Class TOP 12 Corps all draw their marchers from all corners of the country as well as all corners of the world now.

I look at clearwater as a spring training area just like any other sports franchise from the northeast. It sure is nice they have an actual facility to train. I'm jealous a bit. Our hornline practiced weekends at the Massachusetts Envelop Company (a.k.a. Mass Envelope) with a bunch of boxes everywhere and then just before tour at the Fargo (government building) parking lot for drill! And it was not fun stopping on sticky TAR in the hot heat!

  6. I notice many of these predictions have Boston in 10th or 11th. I find this curious because this is arrived at by many posters putting a whole bunch of corps ahead of Boston whom they haven't even competed with yet. In addition, alot of folks seem to have Madison in 5-6-7, even though BAC has now closed to only 1 point behind Madsion in the last two shows, beating them in half of the captions. I get the fact that Madison's resurgence is a cool thing, but this math is not working.....some folks are manufacturing a 3 or 4 point spread here where there is only one, and that has been shrinking for the last week. Food for thought...

    We don't Gava!

I'm used to seeing these predictions with Boston in the 11th spot..so it doesn't bug me one bit...it's only Minn and not Indy anyway...of course that's why these predictions don't mean all that much either...

  7. I went to the Colts home show last night in Dubuque. And I'm sorry to say that I found myself completely entertained despite the fact that not one G8 corps was there. I thought that type of thing was NOT supposed to happen!! I think somebody owes me an apology.

It all started with the Colt Cadets. I knew those kids were up to no good the minute I heard the hot drum licks and saw their energetic marching. Then they had the gall to play music that entertained the crowd. Notorious indeed!

But it didn't stop there. Next came Teal Sound. And how were they? Well, lets just say they committed the 8th sin with their show - being entertaining! I took a few minutes to compose myself. "Maybe they just didn't get the memo," I thought. "Spirit is up next. Surely THEY know how it's supposed to be. They'll follow the rules and come out flat and dull like - wait a minute..."

Spirit was entertaining too! Then it just wouldn't stop... Glassmen? Entertaining. Madison? Entertaining. Boston? Entertaining. Colts? Entertaining. It was as if EVERY corps planned on being entertaining from the very beginning!! Dear God, what a disaster.

Oh, and I'm not the only one who was entertained. I looked around and all I could see were rows and rows of smiling faces. "Stop, STOP!" I cried, "This is NOT the way it's supposed to be!" But people just kept on enjoying the show and cheering for all the corps anyway. The poor fools.

So today I'm upset and a little worried. If this entertainment thing catches on with every corps that is not G8, well, I just don't think drum corps will ever be the same again. Heaven help us.

Absolutely Fantastic! I was totally surprised by this post. I gave you a nice positive reputation vote for this one :worthy:

  8. let me be a total geek here, and read into something too much.....and say maybe/yes....what if they are looking back at the Cadets 89 show as something that was "revolutionary" in a sense of some of their design elements and they are paying homage to it. I mean many corps are doing pre shows now.....well Cadets did a preshow when it was called a one minute warmup, and which was more risky because you had to time that pretty well.

It's nice to see that everyone is comparing in a nice way and not the usual they ripped them off posts I'm used to seeing on here over the years...

It's also funny thing for me, but the Cadets 89' show was a HUGE reason I decided to march drum corps in the first place. The very next year I marched Boston in 1990 as a rookie. I always wanted to march Cadets, but because I had such a wonderful time in Boston...I decided to stay and age out with the Crusaders in 91' instead.

  9. These two staff members were in line of sight of said player and were less than 15 yards away.

The staff that eventually came to his rescue came were from within the bleachers, jumping the fences, yelling obscenities at the two that were just watching, on the way.

...and I also agree that there should be medical people standing by at ALL SHOWS for safety reasons..that is just plain common sense...

edit: decided to remove comments...In retrospect...I probably should have kept my mouth shut in the first place

  10. There were no less than three Cascades staff members managing the sound of their amplifications and synths... but there wasn't a single staff member that came to the aide of a horn line member that passed out in the show for 34 seconds.

The audience watched, with literal gasps, as a corps staff member FINALLY went over and checked on this kid... the numerous people managing the sound equipment, most readily available to help... chose to ignore the problem. Only one person can run the sound board... so what they were doing, that was so important they couldn't help a member, is beyond me.

Yes, heat strokes, and heat related things are frequent in the summers... but the maturity level of the staff and their response time in this show was unacceptable. Period.

Hope the young man/woman is doing better though.

  11. FWIW, while searching for something else I happened across this Boo article on dci.org that includes a sample Music Effect sheet that looks like it was probably the real thing used in 2008 at least. Not sure how much they change from year to year.

    The Sheet

    The Article

It even includes "entertainment" as something to look for (defined as "a pleasing combination of aesthetic, intellectual, and emotional considerations").

I just looked at that sample sheet...and for Music effect it says "Evaluate the effectiveness of the program and the performers. The ability to maintain a connection with the audience through a combination of components contributes to effect. The performers are measured in part through excellence but, more significantly, in their ability to communicate the product to the audience."

    This really makes me

  12. Oh okay. I march a sousaphone at my high school. I have never held a true marching tuba. Will the differences be that vast? And since I am starting so heavy, should I just wait two years? I can't lose enough weight to march in 10 months.

Not true on the weight thing...with proper exercise..diet and dedication you could potential drop 100 pounds or more in 10 months...don't loose more than 1% of your total body weight a week though as it's not very healthy...so if your 280 that's 2.8 pounds a week at the most average. You will loose more in the beginning of course...For that weight and height you can start with probably a 2200 calorie diet and drop the caloric level down in stages so you don't plateau...you might also considering working with a personal trainer who knows your goals and also understands diet and nutrition....if you or your parents can afford it.

Disclaimer: I am not MD, dietitian, or personal trainer myself, but I have achieved this goal before personally myself. It is possible! I also recommend you see a doctor first before you undertake any of these suggestions.

  13. I completely understand what you're saying, and I think I understood all that from the original post, but I think you're not getting two things.

    1) What entertains you is not necessarily what entertains everyone else.

And 2) writing an entertaining show is not as easy as it might seem. Especially when you have to write something that is both difficult enough to earn credit from judges, entertaining enough to get the crowd responding, and most of all, achievable for the 150 people that you don't even have yet when you write the show. Please keep in mind that a lot of the people who are out there writing the shows and teaching the corps right now are people who marched in the same era and love the same shows that you do. They're not out their trying to ruin the activity. They're doing the best that they can and they're doing it because they love the activity, certainly not for the money.

#3 Entertaining does not equal gold medal either.

  14. It's one thing for a judge to disagree with the other judges... that's fine! (That's the whole point of having many different judges, and I believe that is a good thing!) However, being so far off on a different planet is another story.

For the record since nero14 didn't think I was serious...I was as serious as a heart attack (thanks craiga)...Historically Debbie Torchia has NOT liked Boston all that much. Tonight was another matter.
